I often discover songs that I have not heard before in video games... these are two of my favorites and where I found them:

Patterns, Band of Skulls - Gran Turismo 5
The Man Who Sold the World, Midge Ure - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

In the case of The Man Who Sold the World, I heard the Nirvana one first. Honestly not sure which version I like better as they're both really good.

Does it count to say that I discovered a fair bit of music through Guitar Hero?

Though the game song I've probably listened to the most over the years is probably Beyond the Bounds from Zone of Enders 2.

The ones I can remember right now:
    - A fair few songs by Steam Powered Giraffe from the game Steamworld Heist.
    - 'The Poet and the Muse' from the game Alan Wake, which is by one of my favourite bands, Poets of the Fall, except they go by a different name in the in-game world and this song isn't in any of their studio albums.

So, do you count soundtracks as well or just songs with vocals?

First, I am going to say nearly all the songs in Devil May Cry 3 and Metal Gear Rising. :stickytongue:
    Oh, and there's more.

I count anything that can be called a song. Lyrics are not required. Persona 5 has some great ones which have versions with and without lyrics. Also, Metal Gear Rising is a great game.

Speaking of The Man Who Sold the World and MGSV, this is really what introduced me in recent years to David Bowie, the original writer and singer of the song. If you haven't heard his version, give it a listen. While I do prefer the Midge Ure version myself, Bowie has a great collection of albums and songs. Ashes to Ashes is a favorite of mine, as is his very last album, Blackstar.

Mick Gordon’s DOOM 2016 - Inspired not just the songs but the story he told his experience making the music.

Darkman007’s Super Cyborg - Russian composer who made songs for run n’ gun game by Artur Games.

Choujin Sentai Maskman (NES/FC) - 8-bit songs that still ringing in my head.

I'm not saying that they're the best songs I've ever heard.. but there are two that I discovered in videogames (excluding music/rhythm games) that have followed me through life..

    "Simple and Clean" - mmm...
    and
Orchid's theme in Killer Instinct "Play Hard"

    :)
