I think you're confusing it with Lost Odyssey, because The Last Story was only released for the Wii =P
Oh dang! Yeah, I got confused xD. I'm bad with names. Then there is another good RPG for me to-- wait, Wii? I need to start saving "orz.

Let's see... I want to give an honorable mention to Xenogears. I like some things from that game. I think characters skills are a little lacking sometimes, the combo system is cool but I often found myself spamming the best one I knew.

< SPOILERS! >

The gears are cool too. I think I found more interesting battling with gears, which is a good sign. Upgrading your gears is mandatory though! It's a money sink. I never cared to buy anything for the characters, all my money went on upgrading the gears, and barely had enough.

There is another small "battle system" in there that felt pretty promising. It was an arena with the Gears. You move your gear, attack, defend... it was pretty refreshing, and I wouldn't mind if that was the actual battle system.

For me it was these 3:

Parasite Eve:
I really liked how you move, while your enemy is attacking and try dodging their attacks and you need to time the attack good or else you get destroyed. :)
I still hope that there is a legal port to germany somewhere, no matter if PSN or steam store. ;)

Disgaea:
Because the battles are very well balanced in it and you need to plan good to reach floor 100 of the item world. ;)

Legend Of Dragoon:
Because it's the best combination of active combat and round turned based combat. :D
Sadly never could finish it, because disc 3 was damaged and it didn't loaded any further. :'( (\s/)

for me the best battle systems are those like in Muramasa, Odin Sphere, Rune Factory, Seiken Densetsu 3, skyrim, etc... I really like this type of thing but ESPECIALLY how its done in Muramasa, the action packed comboing is so much fun!

I also like the tales series, Star Ocean, Valkyria Chronicles, and Agarest 2

not to mean I don't liek others but these are my favorites!

I really liked the combat systems of the Gold Box games (i.e Pool of Radiance). I think they're probably still one of the best implementations of low-scale turn based tactics even after ~20-30 years.

The simple pleasures of hurling a fireball at an x by y grid of monsters.

While being aware of its definite flaws I also really liked the robust spellcasting of Baldur's Gate, especially how much combat flow changes when your casters and enemy casters face off.

I'm migrating to Nintendo soon, myself. Always been a Sony "fanboy", but I gamed on Sony platforms for the traditional

Jrpgs, especially Final Fantasy, but now these are hardly even being made anymore, and the few that are being made

seem to be made for Nintendo consoles.

I am buying the New 3DS for Bravely Default, and Bravely Second, because these are essentially what Final Fantasy used to be.

Since Xenoblade has been released on that platform, which I am also buying, I can hope that they'll get The Last Story on it too.

The simpler the things are, the better for me. I don't like it when a game attempts to showcase the original system that is either too complex or too trooublesome to simply pick up and play. On the other hand, I like it when a game tries to play around with common combat systems, like ATB and turn-based, in the ways that I am engaged to deeper, more stretegic and faster combat: puzzle bosses, combo chains, buff and debuff tactics, etc.

That said, I prefer anything from Dragon Quest pre 'Sword', FInal Fantasy pre 'XII', as well as Phantasy Star II and IV. On the other hand, I don't like any system Compile Heart has made.

Dark Souls/Bloodborne because of the need for spacing and timing and diversity of builds. Immersive as hell.

God of War 3 because Kratos Smash.

I also Mana Khemia's battle system, although I only reached around half of the game. :(

In speaking of Mana Khemia, I also love Ar Tonelico's battle system, especially the 2nd one. I can rapidly press the attack buttons + directional buttons depending on the situation and I can also defend the enemy's attacks during the opponent's phase.

Optimum45, FF2, are you sure? :) I've played through all of them, FF2 seems to have the worst one among FF games.
Yes I'm sure.  Final Fantasy 2 (4 Japan) isn't the game you thought I meant.  It's the one with Cecil, Rosa, Kain, ect.  Simple, effective, beautiful (at the time), and not terribly convoluded.

Ahh. I know that game is FF4! Pretty nice one!

The one I was thinking about has Firion, Guy, Maria and Leon main characters:)

I like the theory behind that system, but in application it was pretty broken.  The game itself was a pretty interesting story too.

Not really favourite per se, but Dragon Force battle system really blew my mind, how can something like this isn't more common

It's almost a turn based 2d version of Mount and Blade

League of Legends probably has the best battling I've ever seen.  It's so extremely viscerally and at the same time it's also so strategically compelling - a fantastic combination of action and tactical gameplay.  The huge variety of different play mechanics mean that each character feels like a different experience, and most of them feel very rewarding.

I really have no favorite as every battle system seemed so good when they blended well with the game and it's other systems.

Anyway, I really liked the systems from these games

FFX (CTB)

Valkyrie Profile (1 and 2) (Turn-based using button input for multiple attacks)

Legend of Mana (Action battle)

Xenogears

Kingdom Hearts (Action battle)

But if I get to pick a favorite, it would be Kingdom Hearts' system. Especially the system used by Birth by Sleep (I prefer it than the one used by DDD because you can level up the commands on BBS and also cause of command style system). But that isn't really because it is the "best" among the systems, it's simply because it really blends well to the game itself and makes it really fun. I cannot imagine enjoying if KH was made to be turn-based battles.

@Wavelength - well, MOBAs (I hate using that name btw) are battle focused games, with the battle system almost synonymous with the game itself. XD

For non turn based I really love Metal Gear Solid style, Devil May Cry Style, Kingdom Hearts Style.

and my personal favorite for non turn based is The Bouncer

for turn based I love a ton such as Chrono Trigger, FF tactics advanced, Robopon and my personal favorite...

Rance Quest. It's not for kids. Don't get it near kids. However, it is a hidden gem among those dirtier titles. Here's a clean example of the battle system.

Yeah.

Saying THE best is probably impossible. It also important to understand what you intend for battle system, if you mean only the mechanics of battle or the balancing as a whole as well.

But I can give a list of the ones I enjoyed the most in no particular order.

- Vandal Hearts 2

- Final Fantasy 9

- Neverwinter Nights 2

- Neverwinter (MMO)

- Breath of Fire 3

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
