As the vermilion sky seethed overhead, Felix and Shayde were closing in on their final quarry. The jungle all around them was a warzone. What few pygmys remained were infused with the dark magick of Sloth and running rampant over the Flesh Eaters defenses. The Flesh Eaters had fallen back to their main fortress, led by King Gilgamesh, in a vain attempt to stem the tide of Sloth's corruption.
The very plants themselves had been brought to some foul carnivorous life, biting and snapping at Shayde and Felix as they worked their way through the dense foliage. Flames licked the sky as the Flesh Eaters set fire to vast swathes of the tropics, sacrificing their own settlements behind them. It was rough going, Shayde and Felix were blackened with soot and ash as they finally reached the outer wall of King Gilgamesh's fortress.
Their silent grappling hooks took them to the top of the battlements quickly, the warriors that had manned them lay dead, their flesh charred by foul magicks. On the other side of the wall, a black mist laid heavily over the interior of the fortress, as if shadow had been cast from some foul beast far above. It was the first time Felix had seen Shayde look worried.
"This is bad. Airship bombardment bad." Shayde shook her head angrily and muttered a few curses.
Felix nodded. "Looks like this one might have given us the slip. We'd best get out of here."
The duo turned to leave, but as they did, a rumbling, caustic laughter boiled up around them, shaking them to the core. As Felix turned, Sloth's terrible visage rose up before him; its burning eyes promising much more than death. Unlimbering his handcannon, he took aim at one of those baleful eyes.
A blast of dark magick smote Felix to the side and he landed in a crumpled heap, clutching his burning arm, his weapon lost in the black mists below. A monstrous hand was closing in on top of him, it stank of death. Was this the end?
A barrier of fire sprung to life around Felix as Sloth's perverse limb drew close, scorching its vile flesh. "Quite potent for an insect," a dark malaise seemed to rumble in Felix's mind.
Shayde was surrounded by a halo of fire, her eyes were burning hot coals of rage. Felix actually found it quite difficult to look at her, it was like looking into the sun.
Sloth seemed to speak without speaking again. "A Sidhe... but you are all dead. No matter. I have killed countless score of your vile strain in the past, it shall be the same now."
Felix thought he detected a smirk in the firestorm. "Some of us had to stick around just in case you came back!" Emphasizing her words, Shayde threw a whirling ball of flame into the maw of Sloth. The explosion scorched the sky. Sloth's flesh was blackened and cracking, but the vile demon was still very much alive. It wasn't going to give Shayde another chance.
A sea of darkness bubbled up below Shayde as she fended off dark spikes of black magick thrown by Sloth. The clot of oil's surface broke with terrifying creatures, their furious vermilion eyes locked on Shayde. The protective fire dome broke and Felix retrieved his weapon. Shayde was surrounded by spiked, black monsters, dripping with death. His weapon barely irritated them. "Shayde!" Felix cried out helplessly.
A roar split the air and a gargantuan beast of a man appeared, hurtling through the smoke filled air, a giant bloody cleaver in each hand.
His massive blades sunk deep into Sloth's neck; he had somehow mounted the demon like a riding bull. Again and again, the giant blades flashed and gouts of black blood burst. An inhuman screech of agony filled Felix's mind just as he saw the man-beast flung from Sloth's shoulders.
But it was enough. Shayde had vaporized the sea of darkness and its wretched children, her attention now fully back on the ancient demon. She leapt into the sky, this time forcing Felix to shield his eyes from the glare. His skin was scorching, as if he was literally brushing the sun.
A column of flame descended upon Sloth, burning it from this plane of existence, and cauterizing whatever dark magick it had left behind. The demon beast made no sound, or at least not one that could be heard over the roar of the flames. And then it was gone.
Felix cautiously unshielded his eyes. The vermilion sky was gone, replaced by radiant blue and scuttling white clouds. The fires in the forest had burnt out, the only memory of Sloth's passing in their naked limbs. Shayde stood before him, her expression bemused.
"Gilgamesh couldn't have gotten far, we'd better get after him."
