If you are so worried about realism, the way you block bullets is with emplacements, why not replace the shield with a stack of sandbags or something, and have the player's movement lock up crouched behind them when in use, sacrificing mobility for safety and allowing an exchange of gunfire as they try to get to a better position. (depending on how fast-paced the combat is, maybe even have a setup time instead of having it instantly appear in front of you.) Obviously it's not completely realistic either, but it's more of an effort towards it than having the player use a buckler or a main gauche to parry bullets out of the way.

Achieving realism must be hopeless for any game. It's not realism that I want, it's consistency -- I know if I play a game and something just seems so outrageous compared to the setting or the rest of the game, I dont like it. If I had the abiltiy to do the katana thing I would. I'm trying to figure out how :p There's so many good suggestions here, I am going to try a bunch and report back. I wonder if anyone else has had this issue and how they resolved it

About realism - what kind of guns does your ABS have? is it a science fiction one?

Because in medieval times the first firearms were mostly useless beyond short range not only due to accuracy, but also because of low power and weak bullets.

I don't have any reference ready and don't know the exact numbers, but even worn iron armor was partially effective against bullets because the first bullets were weak lead bullets that couldn't penetrate the iron after having travelled far enough (and those distances were a lot shorter than today's firing distances because black powder is also a lot weaker than later chemical propellants.

Thanks - this is exactly what I needed.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
