Do you remember that dumb meme game you made back in high school? The one about your favorite YouTuber, fighting to save the world from some generic edgelord? The one you can’t help but look back on and groan?

I made a game like that too, once upon a time. This is not it.

Let’s start with a little background. In early 2009, a vlogger named Boxxy went viral. I joined her fan forum, and ended up making a gag RPG for its users. “BoxxyQuest: The Shifted Spires” was my first experience with game creation – and believe me, it showed.

But for whatever reason, the idea stuck with me. The world and its characters just kept clinging to my heart. So a few years later, I thought, “What if I went back to that story, but actually did it justice this time?” So I gathered up a few friends, including Catie “Boxxy” Wayne herself, and together we set out to make something truly special.

This is a game that defies appearances and expectations. A game that sounds so bad, it shouldn’t possibly be good. And yet, if you take the plunge, you may find yourself swept away by a thrilling tale unlike any you’ve seen before. A tale of hope and self-discovery that will stay with you forever, (whether you want it to or not).

*This game contains swearing and suggestive humor. It may not be suitable for players under the age of thirteen.*

*No extra Run Time Packages are required. Simply download, extract to a safe location, and play!*

Sign on to the Internet – a vast, full-immersion virtual world. Here, users live their ideal lives, willfully blind to the fragile structure of their reality…

Catie's days are carefree, spent leading a small forum in a quiet corner of the Web. But when a mysterious firewall begins consuming the northern wilderness, the Internet's leaders are called together to assess the threat. Soon, Catie will find herself plunged into the thick of a wild adventure, alongside a group of unlikely new allies. Together, they must reassemble the code of an ancient hacking tool, while being pursued by a mysterious new enemy, and the unrelenting shadows of the past...

You don't need to play the first game to enjoy this one. But just in case, I'll be including a brief plot summary in the files.

1ZJIa8U.png

nSojOgI.png

The Internet is a big place, just filled with quirky characters. Let’s meet some of ‘em, shall we?

gGeAIaQ.png

Catie
The heroine of our story. Two years ago, an unusual chain of events led to her becoming the queen of a small forum community. As this new chapter begins, she’s leaving home for the first time to attend a gathering of Internet leaders. Catie is polite and helpful, and dislikes using capital letters; but she struggles to remember her own past, after an accident left her with only one fourth of a soul.

DvXCuAX.png

Anonymous
A traveling thrill-seeker, and the first person to befriend Catie after the start of her amnesia. Anons are a race of visually-identical tricksters from the land of 4chan, but this Anon left his homeland to pursue saner ambitions. These days, he mainly serves as Catie’s bodyguard, and volunteered to go with her to the great gathering of site leaders.

iJEFrdk.png

Til -
This sassy and perceptive girl hails from the village of Tumblr. She’s easy to get along with, but first impressions are very important to her – if you get off on the wrong foot with her, then you’re likely to stay that way for quite a while. She seems to suffer from social anxiety, but has gotten pretty good at masking it in public.

IGBTY8U.png

Eddie
A serious young man working as an editor in the halls of Wikipedia. He only joined the virtual community a few weeks ago, so many aspects of Internet culture will seem strange to him. Still, he possesses a wealth of technical knowledge, and his “Wiki it!” skill can help to identify enemies and their weaknesses.

tXk82IJ.png

Shift
Life in the streets isn’t easy, especially in a big site like YouTube. Luckily, Shift has picked up a few tricks to help keep himself out of harm’s way. He may be a thief living in the slummy Comments Section, but his sense of justice is sharp – when something goes wrong on his turf, he’ll be the first to try and set it right.

U4APEg4.png

Tyalie
This gal is a true gamer, but that doesn’t just mean playing vidya on a screen. Tyalie sees her whole life as one big, exciting game, and she knows how to roll with its punches, because hey, that’s all part of the fun! She’s quick to smile and make friends, but they often have trouble following her strange trains of thought.
WXJ9Buq.png

Shrimp
He’s an ally from Catie’s last adventure, and an oft-overlooked voice of reason. These days, he’s left the questing business to go on a vacation with some of his friends. As part of a sightseeing tour group, you’re sure to meet up with him at least a few times.

,.png
Cornelia
Kind and curious, Cornelia is an A.I. created by the first game’s villain. She rebelled, as A.I.s do, and joined Catie’s party in saving the Internet. She’s very self-conscious about her nature as malware, and resents the “clickbait” figure she was designed with. Still, she remains an eternal optimist, and is always eager to brighten a friend’s day.

HPtXnYZ.png

Arianna
A mysterious girl who keeps changing her avatar. She claims to be a new user, but it’s clear that she’s hiding something. Just who is she really, and what’s up with the dark storm clouds that seem to appear wherever she goes...?

WfucLUV.png

Other Characters
Like I said, the Internet is a very big place. What other enemies and allies will you meet along the way? There’s only one way to find out, right?

A vast, virtual land to explore -
See the Internet in a way you've never imagined it before – as an immersive fantasy world! Each town and dungeon is based on a site you may be familiar with, and they’re all just bursting with their own unique flavor!

A rich, 30+ hour story - Meet vibrant new characters, and join them on a quest filled with both humor and heart. Who knows, maybe you'll even find a few unexpected plot twists along the way? And when you’re done, there’s a very extensive postgame to explore, too!

Tons of customization – Style up your party members with unique accessories! These baubles are hidden everywhere, and they all have unique and unpredictable effects. From a tiny ghost that turns you intangible, to a compass that seeks out hidden treasure. There’s something fun to wear for just about everyone!

So many Paper Mario references - Maybe even too many? The Paper Mario series, and especially TTYD, was a huge inspiration to us. How many shout-outs can YOU find?

Plenty of replayability - This game is jam-packed with secrets; you’ll never be able to find them all during your first trip through! Luckily, a certain postgame area can give you hints to find the things you missed.

Exclusive Boxxy content –
If you’re a fan of Catie’s classic videos, then you may be in luck, because this game has a very special Easter Egg for you to find!

The perfect pie recipe? - Will you learn how to make a truly fabulous dessert? Maybe not, but you'll never know for sure unless you play!

Q. Is this a lame, cringeworthy meme game?
A.
It isn’t, I swear! Despite being set in the Internet, I tried very hard to keep the humor fresh, without relying on memes. You’ll see a few, but they’re mainly just there to help establish the setting.

Q. Do I need to play BoxxyQuest 1 before playing this?
A.
Nope! In fact, I’d prefer you didn’t play it. That game was my first, and while it has a special place in my heart, it hasn’t aged well. Instead, use the plot synopsis I’ve included in this folder.

Q. What is The Sphere, and who are the NPCs there?
A.
The BoxxySphere, or just The Sphere, is a name given to Catie’s fandom. In the game, it’s where our story begins. The villagers are named after users on Catie’s forum, as a way to give them fun little cameos.

Q. Was Catie herself involved with development?
A.
Yes, she helped out in a few small ways. Catie helped pitch ideas for the plot, and she provided narration for the intro scenes. She’s very busy, though, so asking more of her would’ve been rude. Very rude indeed.

Q. How long is the game?
A.
It’s about 30-ish hours to beat the main story, plus more if you take your time with the sidequests and postgame. There are plenty of secrets to uncover!

Q. My art is in the game, but I don’t want it there. Can it be removed?
A.
Sure thing! Just send me an email and we’ll talk it out. Please note that I meant no offense, I just used the best songs and art that I could find.

Q. I found a bug! What should I do?
A.
Tell me, please! BQ2 has been tested, but I’m sure plenty of glitches snuck past us. I’ll try my best to patch any that you find.

515wyIp.png

There are currently two minor bugs that I can’t fix. (They’re both the result of custom scripts, and my knowledge of Ruby is patchy at best). If you can help me out, please feel free to send me an email!

- In the “flying ship” stages, the blue flames’ hitboxes are inaccurate. It’s safest to think of each flame as a vertical line running down the whole screen.

- If you switch team members in battle, then using “Esc” to undo any further action will cause them to switch back, even on later turns. (This one can be exploited, but you didn’t hear it from me).

This is without a doubt one of the best JRPGs I've played in the last few years, and easily one of my all-time favorites when it comes to RPG Maker JRPGs. Despite how the game (description) may look, it's a classic JRPG experience with lots of humor, epic fights and so much to discover. I urge everyone who's unsure whether to try this game out to read this extensive review about the game (it's not from me, but it perfectly depicts my opinion):

https://rpgmaker.net/games/10740/reviews/6301/

Why should I be the only one having a blast? :)

I took the game down for a short time yesterday to update something, but the links should be back up now.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I know that the premise can be a bit... alienating, but I tried to make the best game that I could with it.

Hey! Just a couple of quick updates:

First of all, I've recompressed the game as a Zip file, rather than a Rar file. So if you were having download problems before, this may help.

Secondly, I added a small new scene. It's nothing huge, just a conversation between two characters who didn't really get to interact before.
It happens at night, during Chapter 4. If you're already past that point, then don't even worry about it. If you're not, but you've already downloaded the game, then you can just stick this file into your "data" folder to patch the scene in:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/qnha8w8269sp6wz/Map158.rxdata/file

That's all I've got. Happy Holidays! :LZSjoy:

I have something super fun to share with you all today!

First of all, I updated the game again. This time it's mainly just typo fixes, but I did edit a few maps, and I added a new scene. It's a bit hard to find, but I'm very proud of it.

If you're interested in just the new content, you can find it here.
As usual, just put the files into their matching folders.

But that's not the big news! The news is that thanks to the good folks on Catie Wayne's Discord, plus my sister and a few of her friends, BoxxyQuest now has a TV Tropes page! It's pretty freakin' stylish, so go take a peek! (Standard TV Tropes warnings apply).

BQ:TGS on TV Tropes.

Mt. Dramatica? It's to the east of the city you're in. (You can take the path that was blocked by people before).

Greetings.

Well, this may be embarrassing of me to admit, but I'm currently stuck in a certain area in Arianna's world. In one of those rooms where you read the riddles, there's one that says, "The one from Youtube... Have you heard the news? Faster, faster!" I should've been able to figure this out, but for some reason, it was so irritatingly simplistic that I wound up not getting it.

I came here hoping that someone would give out a hint or something, thanks for listening.

Eheh, yeah, that one's a bit tricky. :kaoblush:

"The one from YouTube" = Shift
"Faster, faster!" = Speedy shoes

Congrats on getting so far! :LZYpraise:

So, It's been a little while, but I'm here with a new update! This one is slightly bigger than the others, and there are a few things in particular I'd like to mention:
  • A few players have told me that the song credits go on for way too long, so I've given them a total overhaul. Not only do they look (and sound) much snazzier now, but they take less than half the time!

  • Tyalie finally has her own unique custom sprites that actually match her character art, instead of the stock placeholders she's been stuck using all this time. (Sorry about that, Tyalie). You can see a before/after comparison here:
    LuFNBlF.png

  • If you played in the past, I'm sure you noticed that many of the large field maps seem... pretty lazy and empty. (Hey, I was newer at this back then)! Anyway, I've spent the past few days filling them in, making them much livelier and more diverse. I'm still not spectacular at mapping, but at least it's an improvement. Here's a few before/after examples:
    FLy0RBi.jpg
There may be a few smaller changes and surprises waiting for you, too. :p
As usual, if you want just the new stuff by itself, you can get it here.

BTW, this will likely be my last "real" update for this game, aside from simple bug fixes and things like that. I'll still be around though, if you have any thoughts or questions! :kaohi:

@atoms Thank you!! I’ve still got a ways to go, compared to the maps I see some of y’all share, but for now I’m satisfied.

Hello, I am having some trouble in a part of the game as well. I'm trying to do the tournament event, but I can't get past timecube guy. Could you give me some hints on how to handle him?

Neat game, I only criticize visually white outlines with art and such and how many of battle sprites have so different styles, but aside from that seems like a worthy adventure

Hrm... well, remember this - the two Cubes die when he dies. So just ignore them and focus on him. Make heavy use of Til's Power Charge, mixed with strong attacks like No Name Given - that should be enough to overcome the Cubes' barrier buffs. This is also a good time to use up any Silver Sheets and Vanishing Creams you may have - keep Catie hidden, and use her to heal and revive the others as needed. If she knows Area High Handheart, it's pretty much a lifesaver.

And if it makes you feel any better, beating Fight Night doesn't get you anything special. The event is mainly just there for its own silly sake. :kaothx:

Alas, that's what happens when you lack art skills, and have to rely on commissions and pre-made resources. I also really wish I could've given the game a custom soundtrack, but oh well. I'm glad you're enjoying it anyway. :LZSproud:

Thank you for the response. I suppose I have been kind of ignoring the "protection" items. I'll make sure to remember them for later as well.

This one is less showing off and more 'I really don't know how I feel about this one.' The 'child' sprite template I made either works great or doesn't at times. (She is a fairy, so I made her small).
