Apologies all; just took a new day job and we are temporarily CLOSED while I get my bearings.

Thank you for your interest! My goal is to help you make your game even better! And best of all, I'd like to do it for free (commercial or non-commercial).

As game designers, we have a TON of work that needs to be done. We need to build the combat system, invent characters, find or create graphics and sound. There's tiles, sprites, pictures, effects, ambient sound, plugins. So many things on the plate... Getting to all of it can be a real challenge.

You're on RPGMaker forums, so chances are high you want to make an RPG. That means chances are also high you've got a story to make. You see how this thing plays out in your mind. You've got some key sequences planned. You've thought of the bitter betrayal, the slowly building romance, and the turning point where our plucky protagonist grows up and becomes a hero.

Then you sit down to event it out. You watch through it... And you don't love it. So you rework. You rework it again. Or even worse... You don't know how to convey the emotion you want in a polished and professional way that your players will get sucked into.

That's where I come in. I'm not looking to create your story for you. I'm not here to pour my heart into the game of my dreams... I'm here to help you build yours.
I have a few services I’d like to provide (completely free of charge).

    Line or Copyedit
This is the most basic and simple of the help I’d like to provide, but I’m still happy to provide it. This is basically me reading your scenes and dialog and scanning for typos and grammatical issues. I make sure that the sentences are structured in a readable way, and try to limit the number of times a player has a re-read a message to make sure she knows what’s going on. Seems simple, but even authors who review their works a dozen times miss things. Take advantage of this!

Typically completes within 24-48 hours per scene

    Substantive or Structural Edits

Far more advanced, a substantive edit is when I review the storyline of your game on the whole. I’ll consider characters, the flow of the scenes, the moments that matter, and ultimately the ending. I watch for cliches or overused/tired dialog, and help you to get something fresh and captivating. My goal with this edit is to validate if you have a tale that will hook readers and keep them drawn in.

Typically completes in around 3 days per scene, BUT it’s performed against the whole project, not just a single scene at a time so you’ll want to bust out some multiplication.

    Story Fixes
This is more personal and specific, but I’m also happy to help if you’ve painted yourself into a corner. Got 14 plotlines going and not sure how to end them? Have a flat character you aren’t really sure what to do with? Feel like your villain is too stereotypical? That’s where I can help.

Typically you should start getting ideas within 48 hours.

    Scene Creation
Most involved, I’m also happy to write your scenes. If you share some pertinent details about the characters involved and the backdrop for the scene, I’m happy to choreograph and write the dialog for any major scene/cut scene of your game.

Typically should complete within 2 weeks per scene, depending on workload.

What do I need to get started (AKA: Template)?

    1) What kind of service do you need? (of the four listed above)

    2) Are stories potentially branching, or is it linear?

    3) If you are seeking editing services (copy or structure), how will you be providing me the text?
This can come in the form of any shared document, or you could send me the game. If I have the game, I need some way to navigate it quickly… IE: A win button for combat, or portals to the scenes you want me to look at.

    4) If you want scene creation, I will need the following additional items:
    — Overview of the story (as before this can be done with text or the game)
    — Detailed primary goal for the scene
IE: We want to establish that Mom has officially cut off my allowance.
    — Detailed secondary goals
IE: If possible, we’d like to allude to the fair in town and mom needs to mention that Little Sister currently is borrowing the player’s bicycle.
    — List of characters in the scene (and if I haven’t worked with you yet, I need to know about these characters including personality or quirks)

    5) What’s the general feel of the story you are going for?
Humorous? Gothic horror? Epic fantasy? The style makes a big difference.

    6) Target audience?
If this game for everybody (including kids), or a specific age bracket?

    7) Anything else I need to know or that would help me?

    Examples
    Why Me?
    A few reasons:
    1) My day-job involves working with and improving written communication to make it clearer to the recipients. A lot of these are from individuals for whom English is a second language.

    2) I’m practiced. First of all, I’m a writer. I’ve churned out many short stories, and have written over 200,000 words for novels. I also am an editor on other people’s work. In addition to offering editorial services on paid freelance pages, I’ve also provided feedback and critique work on two published novels, a published comic book, multiple games, and a slew of short-stories for critters.org.

    3) I’m well-equipped. I have read dozens of books on the craft of story-telling, including the classical Steven King's On Writing, numerous books by Orson Scott Card and James Bell. Big fan of Weiland's books on outlining. I also don’t limit myself to just books on writing. I’ve enjoyed film-centric aids such as Snyder’s Save the Cat to Truby’s Anatomy of Story. I also own books on editing and grammar, from the humble Strunk and White’s Elements of Style to the massive Chicago Manual of Style vol 17.

If those names mean nothing to you, don’t sweat it! Just know that I take both a practical as well as a scholastic approach to writing and editing.

Does this cost money? The title says "shop" but it is in Resource Workshops, not Classifieds. Also I see no other mention of paying money.

I also have the same inquiry as Thomas. I'm definitely interested in this kind of service. Not now though, but soon.

Branded Tales is hands down the best writer I've ever worked with.

He's taken huge chunks of my game and vastly improved my story, dialogue and written some brilliant parts to really bring the characters and world to life. Working with him has even helped me improve my own writing. My game wouldn't be 1/10th of the game it is without him, I'd urge any of you regardless of your writing level to get in touch with him before he get's too busy.

I'd imagine as he's in resource workshops and not commercial it's free or maybe for a trade at least for non commercial games. I'd suggest shooting him a pm or message as some people work for free on non-commercial games and charge on commercial ones.

What I can guarantee 100% is he'll make your game amazing.

What service would it fall under if I were to ask you to help look over a story outline and review it and/or help fill in a missing plot thread (the outline is substantial and detailed and comes with detailed character descriptions)?
