Burnt grass effect?

Hello everyone! We're currently working on a post-destruction map in our game that we envision having areas of burnt grass throughout. I'm just curious if any of you have had experience creating any burnt grass for parallax mapping in the past and which techniques you used to give it that look? These are a couple images of what we've come up with so far. Any critiques for these screenshots or advice on how to create a better effect would be greatly appreciated!

You could do this with Parallaxes as well. Otherwise you'll have to make the effects tile-by-tile. Smoke animations can be used to make the cindering effects.

Sorry, I just re-worded the original post. I fully intend to do through via parallax mapping.

It kind of depends on what you're using. In GIMP I'd just have a stock green background that works for grass and use a brush with swirly stroke type for the brown and yellows.
