This is not really a request  so i thought I would ask this question here. I am not sure where it should go for my fan game i found drawings of the characters portraits i woud like to put in the status menu. So when I go to gimp and color the background to alpha and then import in vx ace there is still this white outline. I tried saving as different image types and things but could not get rid of that annoying looking white outline. Is there any trick to getting rid of that and does anybody even understand what I am talking about lol help please. Here is an example of one of the pics i want to use.

alter-2.png.png

if anybody knows how i can bypass the white outline that would be great if not i guess i will just get a script to use sprites instead of portraits.

First, open it in an editor that supports transparency, delete the white part and make sure you don't have any white background layer too and save it as .PNG... if that doesn't work then maybe you're doing something wrong... probably in the delete part...

BTW, if you check the image outside of RM or image editing software, it will really have a white outline but in RM (or any other program that supports transparency) it should work fine...

Your images look lossy. Or maybe that's just how the artwork is supposed to look.

Anyways, the reason why the white outline is there is because they are not pure white RGB(255, 255, 255). If you fill in your images with a black background you should see the "white outlines". You need to get rid of those outlines.

I have not tried any of whatever I said up there so I could be wrong.

See i have tried this and it did not work it works when i did it with the picture of a battler before but it does not work right I did everything you have said and i still get that outline. Can you please try it with the picture and let me know if it works for you because if it works for you then it would mean that i am doing something wrong but i did exactly as you said. I opened it with gimp selected the fuzzy select tool deleted the white backround exported as a png imported to vx ace and there is a white outline surronding the graphic of the character.

Import it into the maker, and there should be a 'select transparent colour' popup.

It's like tsukihime said, because the picture was saved as a file format with compression (likely a jpeg, im at work and can't open the file myself to confirm that but yeah) so the background is not a solid colour. I'm not familiar with gimp, but I know photoshop has a way to select similar colours to the white and also ways to grow the selection area and these methods would start to slowly get rid of the off white colours. You could look for a funtion like that in gimp, but to be honest it isn't going to yield smooth edges and the chances a 'select similar' sort of function clears the shirt and eyes as well are very high.

Your best bet is gonna be to grab the eraser tool and erase along the edges by hand. Takes some time and some accuracy, but it will give you the best results.

This is the problem with nabbing random files off the Internet. They are saved in a low quality format in order to reduce the size and the compression really mucks stuff up.

it simply means you have not deleted all of these "white" thingy... just try tsukihime's suggestion of putting a black background layer so that you can see and select then delete the "white" lines...

as for sprites in menu, try looking for the menu scripts in the masterlist, we have lots of those... XD...

PS: don't really just take things off the net... at least make sure that it is fine to use it... :)

You actually edited that image before putting it into your game? Someone might be able to do a better job than you were originally able to, if you provide a link to the image you started with ... as long as it's okay for you to use it, and it's not ripped.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
