can bees sense compassion?

Sure enough, they did get in - but what happened was that the native Bumble Bee (a distinct species, not just an endearing term for them) pacified them.  Those aggressive bees settled in and are now no more aggressive than any other bee.  How did the native bees do it?  No one's sure, but they did.

I am really curious about this. How was it known that the bumble bees pacified them and not anything else, like the climate perhaps?

I think the change was noted only after the invasive bees intermingled with the natives. Being chemically sensitive, they probably found themselves overwhelmed by the native bees' pheromones (which bees use for communication), and found their behavior shunted into a different pattern. If it was the climate, or some other environmental factor, the change would have been noted before their infiltration of native hives.
