First of all tiles are 48x48 in MV, which is basically 3*16 x 3*16, that said you cannot do this without a plugin. However I am quite sure there is a plugin that allows you to use smaller tiles.

EDIT: I checked, it is made by Shaz. You can find it here.

If you don't want to use a plugin, you'd need to put the 16x16 tilesets you want to use into something like gimp or photoshop, resize them until they're 48 x 48, export and save these new tiles. These should then be able to be used in your game.

Depending on the quality, sizing them up may not work nicely and may require touching up, though. And it just means everything will look bigger than how it does in the game you're taking inspiration from.

16x16 can be sized up to 48x48 perfectly as long as you select the correct resizing method.
Quality loss only happens if you use a blurring formula or if the resize is not full multiple.

For example the 32->48 is always a problem because that is 150%, not a full multiple. on the other hand 16->48 is 300% or multiply by 3 and therefore can work without quality loss.

I strongly suggest this resizing method, because even with a plugin the tilesize can only be changed in the engine, not in the editor, and that requires working with two different tilesets in editor and in engine - a full resize from 16 is easier, the plugin was written for those that wanted to use a 32 base.

To resize 16 by 16 properly simply resize by 300% at Nearest Neighbor interpolation. Keep all your work files in separate documents. To figure out how big you should make your tilesets and such before resizing simply take the number of tiles on the X and Y axis and multiply by 16.

I would also go with the resize tiles suggestion.

You're already struggling to just understand how to use the plugin. I expect you will have troubles getting the correct files in the correct locations. You will also need to change the window size (the plugin doesn't do it for you) so you don't have 3x the number of tiles on the screen at once. Keeping the current window size with small tiles could end up with more events in the visible area updating at the same time, which could contribute to lag. Reducing the window size will cause issues with menu windows that might also need to be resized.

In this case, you should be able to resize your tiles with no loss of quality by following the instructions given above, and the result will look a lot better than if you used the plugin.

It works and people are still using it now.

It was also suggested by the first person to reply a year ago.
