Chaostrophobia: Alone

Name is WIP. Welcome to Chaostrophobia, an original Visual Novel and Puzzle game made in RPG Maker VX. Chaostrophobia is loosely based on design elements from the Zero Escape series, such as multiple branches leading to different endings, and puzzles to advance the game to the next novel section. Chaostrophibia follows the story of a ragtag group of survivors on a dilapidated spaceship drifting to almost certain destruction in a Black Hole after a mysterious event kills everyone on board, save the aforementioned survivors, who have been preserved in Cold Sleep, now you and 11 other survivors must escape the ship through the only working escape pod.

 Planned features:

  • An ending for each major story character (12), as well as 5 other endings, bringing the number of endings to 17.
  • 24 Puzzle Rooms.
  • Time Attack Puzzles to unlock additional niblets of story.
  • 10 Overall hours of novel sections creating a deep narrative of each of the survivors, the ship, it's mission and the world the characters are in.
  • Hidden story locked behind difficult puzzles.

The major theme of Chaostrophobia is that you can't save everyone! Regardless of how you play Chaostrophobia, and regardless of which route you take, no matter what you do, some of the survivors will have to die. For one reason or another, Chaostrophobia will put you in situations where who lives and dies is up to your decision. How will you act? Who will you save? Who will you kill? This is intended to be the major drive to replay Chaostrophobia. Once clearing the game for the first time, a player will unlock the ability to "jump in" at any story branching point they have experienced, lessening the need to play through the entire game to reach a single choice once again. Once clearing the game with all routes, Hard Mode will be unlocked, allowing a player to play through the game again for the final "true" ending.

The Survivors [Unfortunately lacking Facesprites atm. I will get some placeholders in soon, so you can get a general idea of their appearance.]:

Lucy

Age: 19

Race: Human

Birthday: 17/4

Sex: Female /

Height: 5"7

Eye Color: Green

Bio: One of the 12 survivors of the Orion Incident. A gifted scientific mind and self-proclaimed genius, Lucy is capable of solving some of the most complex of questions in the known universe. Unfortunately, she lacks massively in practical skills, often expecting things to be presented in a manner that she'd find in a lab. She graduated the most prestigious of scientific universities at a record age of 15. Has very little memory of their childhood. Last memory before waking up on the Orion is that of stepping into an elevator with Maxwell. Favourite food is bacon and cheese. Dislikes seafood. Loves Maxwell.

Maxwell

Age: 22

Race: Human

Birthday: 8/12

Sex: Male /

Height: 6"4

Eye Color: Blue

Bio: One of the 12 survivors of the Orion Incident. Lucy's lab assistant. While not as scientifically gifted as Lucy, he is much more practical, making him apt at setting up experiments. Due to this, he is often overshadowed by his superior when it comes to major breakthroughs and discoveries, despite Lucy's attempts to get him more limelight. Last memory before waking up on the Orion is that of Lucy stepping into an elevator with him. Favourite food is fish. Dislikes dairy. Loves Lucy.

Elly

Age: 10

Race: Human

Birthday: 10/5

Sex: Female /

Height: 4"6

Eye Color: Mixed

Bio: One of the 12 survivors of the Orion Incident. A young girl with a knack for machinery. Seems to know more about the Orion and Lucy than she lets on, but is unable to say why. She is often a wilting flower, taking the backseat in conversations and attempts desperately to avoid arguments. Last memory before waking up on the Orion is being inside a water chamber. Favourite food is steak. Dislikes sour food. Has an obsession with rabbits.

ZI-87

Age: 71 Activation Years

Race: Autonomous Artificial Human

Date of Construction: 7/9/1987

Sex: ---- /

Height: 7"9

Eye Color: Red

Bio: One of the survivors of the Orion Incident. A huge towering behemoth of a Artificial Human. Despite his enormous stature, he's a kind soul and is against acting rashly. Because of his mechanical mind, he is often able to see rationality during heated debate. Originally served upon the Orion as a maintenance machine. Last memory before waking up is that of the ship's former commander, Harbrey Perry. Most likely to overheat. Fears spiders.

Andrew

Age: 27

Race: Human

Birthday: 6/6

Sex: Male

Height: 6"3

Eye Color: Blue

Bio: One of the survivors of the Orion Incident. A businessman tied by no moral bindings, Andrew is more than willing to sacrifice a few to satisfy the needs of "the many". As such, he is often clashing with those more morally adept. A skilled conman and a gambler at heart, Originally boarded the Orion to further his business career. Last memory before waking up is of playing a game of Poker, where he is about to "win big". Least likely to save you. Hates Rice.

Other 7 Survivor Bios are WIP, as is a large percentage of things. As I said, this project is in it's very very early stages and I would appreciate any and all comments.

number of endings to 17
That sounds very ambitious. I hope if the idea remains, you will have the time to flesh all of them out, so it doesn't feel like quanity was put above quality.

Once clearing the game with all routes, Hard Mode will be unlocked, allowing a player to play through the game again for the final "true" ending.
This also sounds like a promising idea.

You stated this would be both a visual novel and a puzzle game; does that mean the game will be devoid of combat? Not that it would be a bad idea; as a matter of fact, I'd love to see how it turns out, especially considering there will always be a number of characters that won't make it to the end.

I can already tell a lot of people will likely loathe Andrew.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
