So it is one thing that the message has to be a certain length, but another thing is to have to wait every time you discover the message is too long and go back to enter it when you have shortened it. I went to shorten it, and now its waiting for a timer to go off before I submit it - only to see after the timer was up that the message was still too long - and I go back to shorten it again only to wait again and again... If there were a character counter below the text like there is in Twitter, that would make things much more smoothly. Just have a character counter below the text that starts at 140 and counts downward until you hit 0, and then when you hit 140 characters, you can't type anything else into the box so you don't keep filling up the box with text that the server won't even let you put up anyways.

If you enter your message in the New Profile Posts sidebar on the front page, there's a character counter.

You asked for a character counter. I told you where to find one. I assumed your issue was that you had to keep adjusting, then waiting, because you didn't know how many characters you had typed. All I said was if you use the status box on the front page, rather than the one on your profile page (they both do the same thing), it provides a character counter. And you wouldn't have to wait for one to be implemented on the other page. No need to get all offended about it.
