Hello fellas, Im Dante and this is gonna be a huge wall of text.

Im designing a Tactics RPG kind of game, as the title states, meant to be a MMO, PvP oriented (@EDIT: I do realize this is RPG Maker's forums. Since Im not a good enough programmer, Im gonna use what I know to emulate what I can in said engine to test formulas and stuff. Am already aware there is no easy MMO feature for RPG Maker as of now). The game is gonna have 58 races (which I'm gonna list) and each of them can be any of the 55 jobs. Each of those jobs are gonna have 3 paths, being one of them locked for the most suitable race for the job. There are also 12 Hume only jobs for your main character.

Also, for a bit more customization, equipment sets are gonna have 4 attack paths, 4 defense paths and 4 utility paths: damage, dexterity, crit, magic, health, defense, elemental defense, magic defense, movement, speed, tenacity and evasion.

The plot, twists aside, is quite simple: you are a normal, tho intelligent person, when two realities clash. The lawful evil antagonist did this to create chaos, say, from tribes disputing the same land (since both lands are merged), in order to rule this new world. You then meet the protagonist and is asked to become his tactician.

I also plan on making each race and each job have a special trait, and each job path have 4 skills (be it passive or not) on his set. I have the concepts of most paths done, but I'm having trouble designing some original yet themed mechanics. Of course there would be no problem repeating some stuff if need be, but I'm trying to avoid it, and there is where you guys come in: I want you to design skillsets for any job path you feel like, even if they turn out to be crappy, since even those can give me ideas. Why would you do it? First of all, the brainstorm for itself could help you for your own project (and future projects). But mostly because it is fun. I dont know about you guys, but I like to theorycraft.

As a disclaimer, I do realize some of the ideas/names are overpowered/lame, but remember this is still a prototype.

Now lets get to the not fun part.

//Meant to only be unlocked in save games +, and meant to be banned from PvP, being only the face of the "franchise". He can "draw" any skill in the game//
- Mathematician (Walrus)[Calculator]
//Meant to only be unlocked in save games +, and meant to be banned from PvP, being only the antagonist of the "franchise". He can "calculate" any skill in the game, but only hit like tyles with prime number of height, as does Final Fantasy Tactics Calculator//

Riders
- Peg Knight (Angel)[Javelin]
    . ?
    . Battle Cleric
//She can consecrate soil, making anyone standind in there unable to use abilities or attacks, can cast a sun beam that deals an AoE and marks enemies. Allies dealing damage to marked enemies break the mark for some extra damage, has equality, making anyone in the AoE have his health reduced/increased to the same Battle Cleric current health, can make an ally unkillable (his life total cannot be less than 1)//
    . (Valkyrie)
//Can send both parties to bifrost, making the battlefield plain, can dispell, has a skill shot that deals more damage the more her javelin has traveled//

Sage
- Time Mage (Fairy)[Time Cube]

//Tethers enemies, making them share damage, also has an AoE soul expansion that deals AoE damage split evenly by targets hit. Has a purge, that deals damage and dispells enemies from buffs and debuffs. Last skill is a 0 damage skull that, after impact, explodes into 8 shards that deal damage//
- Trickster (Neko)[Cards]
    . Merchant

The question is: what do you want from us?

This board is for the RPG-Maker-Series only (it's owned by the company selling it, not a general fanboard), and the question is what maker do you plan to use?

Especially

Im designing a Tactics RPG kind of game, as the title states, meant to be a MMO, PvP oriented.
because RM Ace doesn't even have any online functionality, and while there are some online scripts for the older makers, I really doubt that any of those scripts is up for "massively multiplayer", so unless you have a programming team that has written an multiplayer script for RPGMakers (that is possible, it's just so much work that no one has succeeded yet), you won't be able to use any of the programs supported here...

As stated in the opening topic, I want mechanic concepts.

I am using RPG Maker to emulate whatever I can and test numbers and formulas, and that part wasnt there, but Ive already edited.
Any more questions?
@EDIT: Also, calm down, Im still in sketching phase. >_>

Firstly, if you're going to do this by yourself, you've simply put too much stuff into your concept.

Designing all those races, classes and skills, and balancing them is almost humanly impossible. Consider this, how many mmo's do you know with even half of that content you've outlined here? Non, I'd wager, and those are games made by teams of professionals who can work for 8+ hours a day, 5+ times a week.

If you're just doing this for "emulation" purposes, then you don't need all that content. You'd be wasting your time.

Run your basic parameters, record results in excel, and go do make your game in whatever engine you're actually going to be using.

I dont see what you're supposedly emulating for, since the script language for rpgmakers is pretty minor, and the engine's built in set-up really doesn't translate well into other engines.

Furthermore, if you mean emulating stat growth etc, you don't really need rpgmaker. All you need is a notepad, and a calculator.

If you're actually going to be making a game using rpgmaker though - forget whatever it is you think you want to make now. Go take a look at games already in the making, look at scripts that are already made and see how far you can get with the engine, then sit back down and start thinking of a game.

Thinking of a game first and planning all these features before you know how well you can use your engine, and before knowing its(and your) limitations is a recipe for failure.

This might sound harsh, but in this case it's the truth. The faster you realize this, the faster and more efficiently you'll be able to move on to actually doing something productive with your creativity rather than wasting time on pipe dreams.

Huh okay guys... Again, this is the PLANNING phase of my project. Im not asking if its doable or if there are better ways to do it.
Tho I appreciate your concern, what I need is something else. But, if you are not feeling like helping, thats ok, I could try somewhere else.

Anyways, the formulas I would try would be damage formulas. Rather than just staring at numbers, I want to see how those numbers play each other out. I wouldnt know how much is, say, 1k damage on x kit just by looking at it. Eh, pointless discussion I guess?

No, it's not pointless - because any game engine is more than simply a damage formula.
Take a look at the following link, that describes PART of the damage flow (the flow chart ignores a few options with magic damage and counter/reflect)

http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/4219-rpg-maker-vxace-damage-flow/

Trying to balance anything with an engine other than the one you want to use is wasted time, because you'll destroy the balance when you later transfer to the engine you want to use.

So you should either select the engine/program first, or accept that any balancing done here will be 99% useless after you leave the planning phase.

Second, ALWAYS start with a small number of balancing options - balancing work is exponentially more work if you have more options. For example, let's say that you need one hour to balance four classes against each other. Then balancing double the number of classes (8) will take you about four hours at absolute minimum. Balancing 16 (four times) classes would need a minimum of sixteen work hours, because there are much more interactions.

Most professional game developers solve that time problem by either limiting their number of classes (there is a reason why most MMO's have only a handfull of classes), or by starting with a limited number of base classes and make the other classes similiar to one of the base classes, thereby requiring only balancing within the class group, not between every class.

And a third comment:

This is an extremely helpfull community, but helping is not only padding your back - it's also telling you when you do something stupid that will only cost time and waste your work. And you need to be able to accept that help, accept that you are doing something wrong, if you ever want to complete your game project.

There are a lot of people on this board that have completed games and that know by experience (and their own past errors) what will work to help you complete the project, and what will cause you to waste your time until you are frustrated and abandon your project.

Follow the link in my signature - most of what is written there is specific to RM, but there are also several tips that go beyond any engine in organising and planning your game project.

As a matter of fact, I myself have completed some (EXTREMELY) simple games, bot using RPGM and standard programming. Heck Ive even done some Ragnarok editing.
Im asking for brainstorming. I needed some people that had either more historical culture or different gaming experiences than me (I havent played every rpg there is, after all).
What you are failing to see is that Im NOT yet concerned about balancing. Im still creating the classes concept, the story... Their mechanics... All this arguing or whatever that is came from your not very useful bashing - I mean, you havent even read the first couple words.

Ugh just... Nevermind, okay? Thanks anyways. ):

Ridiculous.

Firstly, I read your entire post. Secondly, you're not being honest, either to yourself, or to us, either on purpose or because you really aren't aware of what you're doing yourself.

You've edited your post several times post feedback to clarify what you want which was impossible or even apparently counter to the stance that you first held.

First it seemed you were making a game, which we've now clarified you aren't.

Then you say were primarily aiming to emulate features, which we've now clarified isn't really the case.

Now, you're looking for brainstorming.

Firstly, we tell you your project is unworkable or very likely impossible for you alone to make, which is true.

Secondly, we tell you that emulation is pointless if you're not going to be using rpgmaker for development, which is true.

And finally, I told you that brainstorming and feature planning is putting the cart before the horse in game development if you haven't decided what tools you're going to use and your skill-set in relation to your development options.

Besides, this is an rpgmaker development community, and this is a section dedicated to game mechanics pertaining to said community.

My question would be : what did you expect?

Again, why are you brainstorming finer points of gameplay when you haven't even picked a platform, or engine? More so, why are you doing this when you're admittedly not going to use this platform, rpgmaker, for your development?

This isn't the right section for what you're doing.

As it stands, you come off as one of countless insecure kids who come on here with dreams of grandeur, who's looking for affirmation and support for your idea, lacking any real confidence, and expecting people to come through for you, which is why you act so defensively when people provide criticisms, despite it being constructive criticism at that.

We see that all the time, and that's why you won't see anyone come running to post "wow, great idea man! I really wanna be a part of this! Here's some advice and free resources!"

The advice you got, if followed, will save you lots of time and effort, and set you on the path to constructive development.

If you can't see that, or can't handle that, then you probably aren't cut out for this.

This isn't bashing, and nobody here is angry with you, or being mean-spirited - they're merely telling you what they tell everyone else who've come before your saying similar stuff, for the exact same reason. It's a sentiment founded in years of experience.

Take it or leave it.

Still dont see whats wrong with being a kid with dreams of grandeur. I dont plan on finishing it tomorrow so Im not even concerned about it taking a LOT of time. Truth is I wanted to plan everything first before picking a platform and yeah, that was wrong, and you were completely right about this being an RPG Maker forum. BUT. The forum itself isnt monetized. And I dont feel like using the software anymore because I feel (might be wrong, I might just prove to be that insecure kid because of that) the community is ****. Now dont get me wrong, this is not my first forums, Im used to bashing and stuff... Its just that this was important to me.
Lastly, I wasnt talking about you with the no reading part.

I just wanted some good ideas from people with different minds from mine. Not lectures.

Sorry again for any inconvenience.

And please close this thread.

That the forum isn't monetized is irrelevant. I was simply talking about relevance in terms of what you're setting out to do and what kind of forum this is.

Having dreams is important, and good for you for having them. However, once you try to realize them, practicality is a must. Being able to listen and take constructive criticism is another.

Your sentiment about this community is sad. Everybody here receives the same treatment, because this is a place for development, and criticism is integral to that process.

Nobody in this thread has sworn at you, or been rude to you. Whatever I feel about you now was brought about by your complete disinterest in considering what people here had to say, and how defensive you now act.

Personally, I think the community here is excellent. It consists of many helpful individuals with lots of experience, who'll go out of their way to help people like you progress as developers - but as we've said, that does not include special padding from uncomfortable opinions and truth which, as I said, is necessary for people to grow.

If people here shied away from telling people when their plans or products don't work, nobody here would get any better. It's better for you in the long run if you manage to live with that, and don't give up.

Rpgmaker is a wonderful software that has so many opportunities for indie developers. If you wanna quit, that's your choice. I'd advice you to suck it up and stick with it though. You'll find that very rewarding in the end.

The same can be said for this community.

If you really think can balance out 50 or so races and 50 or so classes (not even counting in the amount of work needed to work out story, gameplay, music etc.), you are simply delusional no matter what engine or programming language you are planning to use.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
