For whatever reason I struggle to do even simply detailed hands without making them look like lobster pincers.

Ah, the smooth lines is what I use adobe illustrator for! When I used illustrator, I was actually really surprised at how much better the work looked, just from the smoothing of the lines.

Clord: I find the best tools to use to learn are videos of people telling you their workflow, not those that tell you how they actually did the art. For example, one that shows the image ps they used as references for clothing (mixing and matching, etc), same for lighting and texture. I've not gotten to implementing every technique within the same body of art, but I'm working on it one-by-one.

A handy hint for your next piece: remember that clothes and hair don't share the same line as the rest of the body. Your clothes 'hover' slightly above the body in terms of the top outline for each.

I'd recommend going to DeviantArt. You'll find many a drawing tutorial for BOTH men and women. It's a good idea to get to learn how to draw both gender, in case you ever have to.

Also, we have several talented artists who host streams on livestream with them drawing live. :)

Most important of all:

As one amateur artist to another, my advice would be this:

Don't WORRY about what X person, Y person or Z person can do. You are YOU. You are NOT them.  Don't let anyone make you feel bad about your skill level compared to theirs.   Also, there is nothing wrong with CONSTRUCTIVE criticism from fellow artists, but ignore the negative ones. (This is bad, that sucks). A good critique will tell you what's wrong AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO FIX IT. Don't let the Dream Crushers get to you and just Do it.

Pretty good so far for not having dawn ever. Practice will only make you better. :)

It looks like you're off to a good start!

The biggest thing I could recommend, though?

Don't bother with manga/anime tutorials/how-to books. Get basic "realistic" anatomy nailed down, and then you can move into more stylized art (ie: manga).

It's not nearly as much fun, but it makes things considerably easier than going the other way.

That's a lot better already. Now apply the same 'hover' technique as you did to the clothes, to the hair.

Great! Now the anatomy! :D (Which kinda comes down to what style you want - realistic or anime... I suggest consulting reference images.)

(After anatomy comes shadows, as shadows or highlights may be placed on anatomical features)

You guys have no idea how much motivation these replies give to me.

Especially since my art direction is rather weird due I like to draw stuff related to my weird fictional world.

Some things like "clan collars" might end up being repulsive to some but I like to draw them.

Plus I prefer to draw female characters so expect plenty of those.

don't find my comment harsh okai I just give you tips D:

for the eyes in manga ilustration

the eyes have one eyes of difference between them

for the nose is most of time depend of the style but naturally it go with the heigth of the eyes

but in your case the eyes are really bigs so I suggest yo only take the half eyes

the neck is supposed to have to have the weigth of the two middle of the eyes

but naturally it is normal manga proportion

the shoulder follow the half'' part of the weigth of the face

the arm are generally in manga one eyes of size

I suggest you for have good proportion to always do the ''doll'' things

like the cross I don't know sadly how to explain it in english

but it is simply a bunch of circle and shape who help proportion

and generally a normal girl of 16 years in good health not to much tall or short

is equal to 5 or 5 1/2 head

more head of heigth you have and more the character will be tall ;3

and it is a good thing you try to learn via youtube but you can also check some good book and it is important you don't stick to manga style and learn realist because it permit to better draw proportion anatomy and more other concept like Deepness in draw.

continue like this x3

it is sure in the first year you will not have really big progress but if you persist after the second year you should be saw some really good progress ;3

so Nio out ;3

Good luck! I still have trouble with drawing people.  Plus, you even have a tablet, so that should help a lot.

I'm doing something very wrong with proportions?

I think nio kasgami is referring to that "sausages on string" technique.

I know it is not a real term for it lol. Essentially you draw lines with "joints" to have easier time with proportions and stuff.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
