College Mon is an RPG that is being created using RPG Maker MV. It is heavily inspired by the Pokemon series though it will contain features and storylines that will set it apart from Pokemon. One of these features will be that the player will be able to explore their environment more freely than was possible in Pokemon. In Pokemon, players were restricted to where they could go based on how far along they were in the storyline. But in this game, players can go wherever they want, whenever they want with very few places restricted or made inaccessible. I have created an alpha build of the game to show off the things that I want the game to be able to do and also as a way of testing how well I could implement the ideas that I have for the game. I am interested in showing this alpha build to the RPG Maker community to get feedback on what can be improved or what other ideas or resources that I could incorporate into my game to make it better. This is my very first project with any of the RPG Maker tools so I do not expect anyone to like what I have made so far, at least not very much. But I hope that the RPG Maker community will offer me useful and insightful feedback so that I may learn what it truly takes to create a successful and fun game with RPG Maker.

I would also like to take this opportunity to give credit to the following people for providing me with the plugins and other resources that I have found useful in the creation of this alpha build:
o Infinity Thief on the rpgmakervxace.net forums for providing the common event enemy capture system
o Yanfly for the Yanfly Battle Engine Core, Animated Side-View Enemies, and the Visual Hit-Point Gauge
o Yoji Ojima for the Enemy Book, though I wish it could be more detailed, allow for longer descriptions, and also allow for partial and complete book entries
o Zalerinian for Game Focus
o HimeWorks for Large Choices
o Jeremy Cannady for the Monster Storage Box
o DoubleX for the DoubleX RMMV Permanent States
o PrimeHover for the PH Quest Book

Game Synopsis: In the alpha build of this game, the player will be a first year college student selected by Altea, Chancellor of the upcoming University State College, to participate in a series of experiments to help her decide how she is going to create the best possible experience at her, as of yet, unfinished college for her students. The player will be interacting with a collection of unique humanoid creatures that are called mon. Mon behave and live just like normal humans do. But they have physical characteristics that set them apart like pointed elf ears, wings, tails, bright red or green skin, or even animal ears on top of their heads. But the main thing that sets mon apart from normal humans is their ability to cast magic spells. Mon possess a hidden force inside their bodies called mana and this is what allows them to use magic. While humans will not be able to innately cast magic spells, they will be able to use magical items and even use spell scrolls to create the effects of magic spells. They will also have their own special skills available to them that will make them just as powerful as mon. While most mon are friendly and get along really well with humans, other mon can be very anti-social and hostile towards both humans and mon alike. Because such mon exist that use their magical powers towards nefarious ends, laws have been made to allow humans the legal power to protect their lives buy allowing them to use special weapons that capture, subdue, and tame hostile mon. The featured tasks that can be performed for the Chancellor Altea are as follows:
o Recruit one of six types of mon to join the player’s party, each mon represents on of the following six elemental types: darkness, earth, fire, light, water, and wind.
o Recruit a mon called a sliim, an earth/water type, by persuading it into joining the party. The player will use charisma (which replaces Luck) to use one of four available persuasions to convince the mon to join the party.
o Attempt to catch a mon called a wraap, a fire/wind type, by force using an energy cartridge. The player will do battle with a wraap and will want to weaken it by lowering the wraap’s HP and inflicting debilitating states like entangle or blind before using the energy cartridge item to catch the mon.
o Engage in a mon battle with another student in the experimental field using the mon that the player has caught.
o A storage system is available for players to store any mon that they don’t need in the party. WARNING: THERE ARE NO RESTRICTIONS THAT PREVENT PLAYERS FROM STORING THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE STORAGE SYSTEM. BUT THE DEMO IS HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE PRESENCE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE PARTY. PLAYERS SHOULD NOT STORE THE MAIN CHARACTER INSIDE THE STORAGE SYSTEM OR THE DEMO WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FUNCTION PROPERLY!
o Sample six different engagement rings from a jeweler and use them to propose to a mon in the party to get the main character engaged.
o Challenge a college mon professor to a mon battle and earn a gold, silver, or bronze medal depending on how many of the player’s mon survive at the end of the battle.
o The player can arrange a wedding ceremony to occur at the “gazebo” (it looks more like a crappy stage) and have the wedding overseen by either Altea, or the local pastor. Same sex weddings are allowed, but only Altea will perform marriages for same sex couples (Be careful though, one of the characters in the game is not fond of same sex couples. This character will serve as a major villain later on in the development cycle.)
o Altea and other faculty and students will use the e-mail system to communicate with students to share information with players that is not available anywhere else. The “terminal” is just a wooden sign against the wall on the upper right hand corner.

Critique: One particular item might be a problem to some of the people who might play on this demo so I decided to include this as part of the critique section: There is a character in this demo that uses derogatory slurs against the player’s party if the main character has entered into a same sex marriage. If testers are bothered by this kind of content, then I apologize for making them unhappy. But I cannot recommend that such people should sample my alpha build. The character in question is named Fanleilea, and she was not meant to serve as an attack on marriage equality, but as a recognition of the reality that people in the LGBT community are facing. With this issue set aside, I am happy with the way the alpha build turned out. But there are still problems in the design for which I have not yet found a more practical solution. The first problem that comes to mind is in the enemy capture system. The capture system runs entirely on common events and can only work properly in troops that have a single enemy. Because I do not have any knowledge or experience in Javascript, I have been unable to find or construct a plug-in that allows for a better way to implement the enemy capture system. Another problem is with the actor storage system that I am using. When I was using VX Ace, I found a good actor storage system created by Sakuraba, from the rpgmakervxace.net forums, that allowed me to lock chosen actors into the party to prevent the player from putting them into storage. The system I am using in this demo does not have this feature and because I made the demo dependent on the main character being in the party, I have to warn players not to store their main character. I am hoping that Mr. Cannady, the creator of the actor storage system that I am using, will continue to work on this plug-in to improve its functionality in the future.

I have decided to tag my post with the names of the creators of the
plug-ins that I am using for this alpha build to let them know that their work is being used as well as invite them to try out my alpha build and offer feedback on how my project can be improved. I have also included three screenshots of my build in action.
