This is just generalized and survey of general opinion discussion. I am not an experienced writer and I would like to expand my horizon on the subjects, at least I can get familiar with the writing and other perception. Different people have a different sense of humor. Thank you for at least stopping by. Please provide examples, so I would be getting of what are saying more. In today time, it is funny to some, but an offense to some. I do not know which itself funny too me.

Eh, I dunno. I find villains calling people names sorta funny as well as lewd jokes.

I suppose all types of humor can be good. Honestly people don't laugh at the same kind of jokes, and depending on cultures, the kind of humor can be very different.

Also, I don't understand some of your choice. What's "physical humor" and "highbrow humor"?

Honestly, most of that stuff is spontaneous when I'm coming up with a scene.

I think humorous descriptions for items, or names for things, or random NPC names, are what I like the best. And of course, those are usually "dad jokes." Like one of the games I made in RPG Maker FES has tons of military NPCs, with names like Major Payne, Private Dansure, Captain Herlock (female ship captain, outfit vaguely resembles Captain Harlock's), etc etc. One of my favorite jokes was the two punker characters who join your party. One of them is wearing a t-shirt and the description says "the T stands for torn," the other is wearing a fishnet dress and the description says "looks, feels and smells like a net used to catch fish."

@MushroomCake28, It is not my wording that why is hard to understand. Physical comedy: a form of comedy focused on manipulation of the body for a humorous effect. It can include slapstick, clowning, mime, physical stunts, or making funny faces. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_comedy
Highbrow Humor: Humor pertaining to cultured, sophisticated themes. (pretentious stuff)

Sorry, it is not my expertise and I have no I have no idea.

@OmnislashXX, that is great that you have a sense of humor and a positive person.

@mobiusclimber, I see many people do that and make fun of the character or their game. The dad jokes required a reference and came off as witty for me, but it makes me laugh out loud. It is creative, but I do not find a reason for me to laugh.

I checked all the boxes because I like and use all types of humor. No really, I always double-check my jokes to make sure they're something other people won't get mad at. ;(

@Aesica, the problems with today comedy. It is funny offensive jokes, dry jokes, and required player a reference of contexts. What is your joke style when you are writing? Some people are just funny, positive and laugh at everything. Easy job for a writer. Being offensive is subjective and hard to measure that why I am only can find a general consensus. What do you find funny when you play a game?

I'm probably one of the "positive and laughs at everything" kind of people. As long as the joke isn't outright stupid, it'll probably make me smile. As for my joke "style," it really depends on the situation. I have everything from protagonist-in-awkward-situation humor to toilet humor to subtle high-brow humor to reference humor in my game so far.

@Aesica, what do you mean about the joke in your feeling of being stupid? I like many jokes too as long as I get a logic of the joke. The joke that I dislike most it is the joke that is not a joke in the first place. It is hosilty and hated word disguised with a laugh. Lucky, it is not rarly happened in a video game. Most of the joke that I see in a rpg game is about making a funny name for a character. I found that is not funny for me.
In the final fantasy, father of hero fights over a fighting teacher over name calling of his son and get into a fight for an hour of the game. I think it is a silly and inconsistent for the character personality. The father is a calm and matured character.

My favorite humor in games (and TV and novels and most forms of media) is character-based humor. Things that are funny because of the characters that do them. Likable character-based idiosyncracies. Stuff like that.

I also like subtle real-world references (like Recettear's ripoff of the Amazon box and Persona's bland-name sodas), and situational(?) irony (the type where your biases are subverted with something that was very obvious to the characters, like a camera pan) very much.

I find satirical/parody funny, but not in a fourth-wall-breaking way. More like in the style of Lego Batman and Into the Spiderverse, where they do a little more than simply acknowledge a certain ongoing cliche and tie it together with more character-based humor.

Physical and Slapstick comedy in Mario and Luigi games are entertaining, but I don't recall ever laughing out loud at them. It works better as a setup to the game's witty writing.

When I'm making the humor in my games, it has to be something that makes me laugh. If I find it funny, then others will like it as well.

Your audience determines the focus, but in general satire is a well appreciated form of comedy. I also see it's in the lead currently. My advice is to avoid toilet humor altogether. While it works well in visual media like Ricky and Morty, it doesn't translate well into game scenes or rpgs, takes custom resources, and time in development that can't be reused unless it's a running joke.

The hardest part of writing comedy is knowing your audience. If you know who is playing your game, you will be able to write towards their enjoyment. You can't assume because you write well enough people will find your work in this form of media. General audiences will not play an rpg to be entertained, so keep that in mind.

I like visual comedy, things that come in the form of unique sprite interactions or animations, or edited facesets to help push the joke. Just text rarely does it for me, but it depends on how well it's written, or how it's delivered.
I also appreciate original humour a lot more than memes borrowed from the internet.

Noticed on the poll there's an option for hyperbolic humour. I've got a soft spot for those. They usually make me laugh, lol.

My favorite type of humor is a mix of the Dank style with slight pinch of irony and black humor (Not in the sense of being offensive). It's kind of hard to explain in words, so here's an example:
A soul that devours others souls ... A good example of cannibalism.
This was a enemy description of my project.

How did I miss this thread?.. I suppose that's what happens when I spend my time mostly on the off-topic forum.

Regardless... I enjoy a lot of various humor, a lot I inject into my game. However--humor (at least to me) is more than just making someone laugh, it's taking the situation at hand, and giving it different perspectives of enjoyment.

I like a lot of dad jokes/puns, one-liners, dark humor and making light of things in a humorous way. I mean--I created a brand of soda called "Blitzkrieg Pop" if someone doesn't smile or roll their eyes with that--then there's hundreds of other things that range from lewd jokes (that's what she said) to silly trash talking and moments of satire, high-brow and irony just for good measure. For me the best humor is the kind that the characters bring to the story; their experiences and the stupid **** they do or say about a given situation or the situation at hand.

My favorite example of something that made me crack up was in the movie Hot Fuzz, in the supermarket scene. When the two main characters are in a severe gunfight and all they can talk about is if Simon Pegg's character said a one-liner after he took out Lurch. Knowing the severity of the situation--where someone could actually (not really) die--they still find a way to make light of it. To tell you the truth--that entire movie was just awesome.

More than anything--humor should be natural and not forced. There's nothing worse than a joke that makes you cringe. Well maybe a teeny bit of cringe, but not a lot. I dunno am tired--

He mad, but he cute :kaopride:

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
