RPG Maker has always been on the PC/Mac/Linux/Android/etc territory. But now, should RPG Maker games go to the overlasting frontier of consoles/handhelds?  :unsure:

For the record, RPG Maker has always been on PC.

MAC/Linux/Android users use it doing tricks.

And I don't understand your question really...  :dizzy:

I get your point... there have been console versions of RPG Maker on the DS (the one shown), PS2, and PlayStation (the original). But i'm talking about ports of RPG Maker games on consoles, not consoles ports of the engine.

Unless the console versions have an online sharing system which has games made by users across the world.

Oh!

Porting!

Makes sense.

Now I can understand.

Well this has been discussed a lot lately in the forum.

Make a forum search and you will see. I don't remember details.  :cutesmile:

What I've heard is there is, in the works, a pre-alpha toolset which is NOT released to the public, but which HAS been used to port a single RPG Maker game to Android (and soon iOS).  Right now, they're working out the many issues with the tool, and there is no official release date yet.

When the tool is ready, it will be available for purchase and use by the public, but I've heard from the developer you really have to design the game with mobile in mind from the get-go, and a lot of the scripts must be redesigned to work with the tool.

In fact, if you look for "Undefeated" on the Google Play Store, you can purchase the first RPG Maker game legally ported to Android.

And oh, btw, developing for consoles might have extra stuff needed than just porting capability of the engine. Being a PS dev for example needs a developer license from Sony. And also, they control what contents can go thru to publishing.

Ummm... Corpse Party, anyone?

It was developed on RPG Maker 95 and was later ported to things like PSP, Vita and Android.

That's the best I can come up with. Maybe looking into it would give you answers?

@Seacliffe

I think you'll find that what was ported of Corpse Party were 2 remakes, only the first in the series was made in RPGMaker.

@Gav

The people behind Doom & Destiny had official permission to make that experimental port.

I hope we get the tool to get games on mobile soon. I heard IG Maker ports to consoles so it's strange RPGM doesn't by default.

Is it hard to make RPG on IG maker?

I heard people says that unless you use unity (or something on par +), making RPG on something that could be ported into android/iOs/mobile etc is not as easy as making RPG on RPGmaker.

It's a bit of a beast. I tried it once myself and couldn't figure it out. Others have the same issue. There's almost no support for it, so you're left figuring it out yourself, and people have used it say it suffers from a lot of issues.

Well, comparing it to RM, it is definitely a lot harder... For one, you'd need to make most of the things that are in RM be default just to make an RPG in IG or any other non-RPG making specific game engines.

Even if you use Unity or something else, making an RPG outside of RPG would normally be harder... In most commercial engines, you're left to create all that you will need...

Yup. Unless if your a great programmer or can hired someone to make a system that is similar to how RPG maker works It is impossible to make a RPG game on Unity.

The only thing we can wait is the official MAC port that may coming out for RPG maker VX Ace but for other ports let's say consider it's hard to do it.

But anyways if your planning to port anything to the IOS rather will be an app or something you have to pay a whooping 100 USD per year just to get your APP on the App store. While for the Android it can be a range from free to a one time registration fee of 50$ (if you planning to release on google play)

Sony, nintendo and Microsoft (Xbox) on the other hand... For Sony and Nintendo your game have to go to their quality check. F.y.i. for Nintendo case there is some cases where terrible game is now being show in Eshop nowadays (anyone seen Meme run for the Wii U), I don't know if they really change how Nintendo distribute their game now but their Japan counterpart isn't affected with this but I herd that distribution there is now free (https://wiiu-developers.nintendo.com/). And for Microsoft I herd that distributing game there is now free if you go thru their Indie distribution service which is at  http://www.xbox.com/en-us/Developers/id (you can distribute a game for Xbox via IG maker)

Hopefully if you planning to make a game using a different engine or just wait until an official porting tools is release(like me)

this can be helpful but remember that you cannot use the RTP outside of RPG maker and IG maker series.

Plenty of people make RPGs in Unity. You don't need an RPG Maker-like system to make an RPG.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
