RPG Maker 2000 is available on Steam (in case someone hadn't already heard).

And I read in one of Steam's community threads that a user of RM2K is (or should be) allowed to make commercial games with it (provided the game is their own idea, natch).

So, I'm kind of wondering if anyone has considered making a commercial game with RPG Maker 2000 yet.

Not me. I used to use the maker a long time ago and with RPG Maker 2003 out and available and able to make commercial games with and being so similar to RM2k in style and mechanics, it just makes more sense to me to use RM2k3 over RM2k. But that's just me. Both are great makers. I guess the deciding factor would be side or front view battle system?

I wonder, is RM95 available? :p

More than just point of view in battle--RM2K is turn based, and RM2K3 is real time (so in RM2K3 battles, you can't dawdle).  In my case, is it turn-based or real-time battle you want.  But yeah... I guess the bottom line between the two is what your needs are.

RPG Maker 95?  Man... that's a good question right there.  I'm curious of it myself.  It'd be cool to see the history of RPG Maker throughout Steam (or elsewhere).

The RPG Maker 95 stuff (graphical resources, at least) was completely awful, lol, with exception of the monsters. I kind of liked those. They weren't at all smart about autotiles and had a single tile for every possible combination. No animated water. Characters had 2 walking frames (think Dragon Warrior/Quest - probably had a lot to do with the inspiration of the styling). If I recall, you could only use the built-in monsters and not add your own. Any graphics that you could replace had to be formatted exactly correctly or it would error and cause problems or the colours would be strange. It definitely feels like a "here's our first go - how well does it work?"

I'm glad that the RPG Maker series kept kn going... but the only thing I want from way back in the Win95 era are the monster graphics. :p

Those monster graphics were pretty good.

I just remember the day I discovered it and how it changed my life forever ;)

There are quite a few rm2k games available commercially, all by japanese developers.

I recommend Helen's Mysterious Castle -- it's seriously one of the very best games I've EVER played and my second favourite steam experience, the first being FF8.

Where can I find Helen's Mysterious Castle?  Is there an English version too?

@MaverickHunterDBoy He said it was on steam just look for it there. http://store.steampowered.com/

Anyway, as for the topic, I'm wondering why someone would want to use 2k over Ace and especially MV for a commercial project. I guess what benefits would there be now?

Lighter performance, natively smaller resolution (the same as the PS1), ease of use, more event commands which means more versatility when one's not used to scripting.

While MV runs at virtually 5 fps for the first 30 seconds after I launch any game, RM2k/2k3 run blazing fast, more than XP/VX/VXA ever could possibly hope to, much less MV.

But in the end it largely comes to personal preference. MV/VXA are much much more versatile if you want to break from the default & know scripting / has publicly released scripts to suit your needs (while complex evented systems, such as menus, battle systems etc. on those RMs tend to have a much much lower performance than on either 2k or 2k3)

Yeah, it's like I said earlier in the thread.  It just depends on what your needs are.

As for Helen's Mysterious Castle, I put that on my Steam Wishlist.  I might have to get that in the near future.
