Hi guys,

We've recently been thinking about the possibilities of new events for the forums. One of the things that has been on the backburner for a while is the idea of an art academy. We did have Pixel Academy before, but this one takes on a general scale, which includes digital art and pixel art. We wanted to gauge interest on how many members in our community would be interested in it.

What is it about art that stops you from going into it? Is there anything that you would like to see if we push for it? Was there something about the previous academy that stopped you from participating? And other issues that we're not aware of. We'd like to hear about them and help us organize something for the community to have fun learning.

Thank you for your participation and time~

This sounds like a great idea to me. If it catches I'll participate. My art skills need some (a lot of) refining.

Oh neat.  I liked the pixel academy.  Hmm, well I wasn't much of a participant because it was really only for beginners.  I think it be nice to have a few of those lessons/challenges be for more experienced artists too.

I love looking at all the unique and interesting styles of artwork on these forums, it's one of the reasons that keep me hanging out here so much. As a child I endeavored to become artistic but my resources were always limited to actual pencil and paper at the time and I never could improve beyond the basest of levels at it. (I later found out that I have Disgraphia, so my motor stability when it comes to holding writing instruments is not as developed as it should be at my age, my 8 year old has better hand writing than me to tell the truth.)

I would love to see something like this implemented... my ability in art right now is just limited to very basic pixel art like recoloring and a little frankening (anything larger than a sprite gives me trouble in the later regard) I get a bit intimidated by all of the people who already have artistic skills that participate in these kind of things, so something that's set up to be geared towards both (I don't know, like a concept with basic steps laid out with tutorials or links for people like me to attempt but a concept that more talented artist could just take and run with so at the end the people who are just trying to cut their teeth can feel accomplishment that they participated and concurrently look on and admire the works of those with more knowledge and see where they could be some day if they keep at it.

I really can't come up with a good excuse for why I didn't try to participate in pixel academy really... maybe I just didn't notice it until it was already up and running and again a little to intimidated to just jump right in.

But yeah I think basically having something that people with and without developed skills in the area could both participate in (like I don't know, maybe they could be tiered or something, you know like it starts as just an assignment like the Art Challenges are, but then has lower levels with tutorials and links for learning different styles for those that need a little more than a concept to get started.

But yeah, I'd be really interesting to see something like this. (28's not to old to try to learn something you've always wanted to learn but got discouraged and never did, right?)

Well, maybe one reason that is keeping me (and maybe a lot of people) away from it is that it's quite hard to begin with... if not hard, well at least it takes much time to at least get to a level where you can produce something "usable"... :)

and oh well, another thing for me is that because I can't freehand that much when using a mouse and I don't have a drawing tablet... so I normally would draw it by hand on paper, take a pic then edit on the computer for coloring and such, which I still find a bit hard to do using a mouse...

but overall, I think it's more about time... it simply takes too much time (though scripting takes too much of my time too)... XD...

anyway I hope to see this one pushing through... :)

Thank you for the replies so far!

Adiktuzmiko, I'm actually a mouse user before I was a tablet user. I used to draw with a mouse and I can understand how painful it can be. But I still remember how to draw efficiently with a mouse and can make a tutorial based on that. (I already had but that needs rewriting).

Here's actually one, 100% mouse made:

I'd like to see tutorials aimed at mouse users for art. I only have a mouse (well I have a touchscreen computer now too I guess) and I'd like to have some tips to go by.

Though my tablet is arriving soon mouse tutorials would be good, since a lot of people don't want to buy/ can't afford a tablet. Also there is a definite lack of mouse tutorials out there.

I have a tablet, but it's been sitting neglected because I can't make myself sit down and art. Having a forum project like this to motivate me sounds like a lot of fun.

Plus, even if I don't pick the tablet back up I do kinda wanna get to work learning pixel art so I can make resources for my RPGM projects too, so I'm pretty much just all for this idea.

Of course, taking an interest in art, and having the ability to make it are two different things.  The art I see around here is wonderful.  Though, the reason I haven't and probably won't post any art up, is because...  Well, let's just say I couldn't get a finger painting posted on a refrigerator, if I were an only child. xD

Mouse user here, scratching my head why the hell you'd need a mouse-only specific tutorial. You just move the thing and magic happens, it doesn't need much more instruction than that.

100% mouse-only art:

Point, you just have to get used to it, there really isn't anything else to it.

Edit: haha gotta love how there's more women voting.

Jeez Cel, I think I may just be mouse impaired. Do you use your dominant hand with your mouse?

You might be on to something, I'd never really considered that I use my right hand for the mouse and left hand for tablet.

The difference is very obvious when it comes to drawing.

I'd love to be able to make my own game art. Number of things stopping me.

I'm okay at drawing, but I haven't done it for a LONG time. So I'm slow, and make a lot of mistakes.

I find it hard to control the mouse when drawing - lots of undoing and redoing because it won't obey me like a pencil would.

I THINK I would find it easier if I could use a tablet, but then I'd want a tablet that I can SEE what I'm doing - using the stylus on a tablet sitting on the desk, while watching the screen, feels really weird to me, because I can't SEE where I'm about to start drawing.

My skills are limited to MS Paint and Paint.net stuff - I have Photoshop but have never used it for drawing. That has so many tools that I've no idea how to use - it's intimidating and I don't know where to begin.

The sheer amount of time needed to practice and actually end up with something worth using, is daunting, especially when I have so little time available. That's probably not something you can help with though :)

I'm not that bad at freehand drawing but I'm terrible with a mouse, I also have a tablet but I still prefer using the mouse (even if I suck with it).

Conclusion? ...I'm a living paradox.

Anyway, If a lot of people manage to realize gorgeous things with a mouse then I don't see why I can't do the same.

(yes, I can move my hands too)

Celianna is absolutely right...you don't need instructions, at the end the secret is only hidden in two words: practice and learn.

Anatomy is something that I struggle with. Mainly because I've never taken an anatomy class before and from what I understand, anatomy translates well into art. That, and, I want to use GIMP for something else other than just resizing sprites and whatnot. I want to know what these so called "layers" are and how they translate into making good, original art.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
