Hmm. Well, I would be doing background art and faces and all sorts of other stuff too... I'll sleep on it, and see about getting one after I get some more moneys (just spent most of my savings on an office chair as I did my back in in the old one)...

I draw with my laptop touchpad mouse, actually, and I feel comfy with it. Even though I haven't been doing art specifically for RPG Maker games or hanging around on the forums for very long, I feel like the community has already helped my art move along by leaps and bounds. Although I may not always participate in the art threads, I do always check them out. I have twin baby boys... I don't always have time for art :p

@ people talking about mouse art vs. tablet art - I ordered a drawing tablet to expand my art, not to "improve it just because it's a tablet and not a mouse/touchpad". Beautiful art can be done with a mouse, as examples from you mouse drawers above have shown :)

@Celianna - Heck yes to more women voting! BD

Check the actual vote now, men are up 17 votes now... although that doesn't really matter. What I find awesome is that upwards of 45% of people voting are not kids/young adults but people 26+ meaning I'm not the only person who missed the boat in childhood but still secretly desires to start swimming anyway.

I thought everyone except the mods would be 13 and just spam Zelda fan games. I was pleasantly surprised that there were *ahem* seasoned folk here, it's a nice change from social networks.

There's no need to overgeneralize like that, Jarrad. Absolutely no need.

I don't think using a tablet vs. using a mouse matters a whole lot when doing art, as it all boils down to just what you're the most used to depending on your circumstances.

The thing is that with pixel art, it's easier and more common for one to get into, using a mouse. Same goes with using a tablet for digital drawing. However, that doesn't mean you can't do pixel art with a tablet, or digital drawing with a mouse. I'm comfortable doing pixel art with both a mouse and a tablet, and I know those who draw digitally solely with a mouse.

Not trying to belittle the importance of tablets, but just thought I should get this clear. Tablets are really, really important as they facilitate a lot of processes in drawing. But if you for some reason really can't or don't want to get one, then using a mouse isn't too bad an idea. It's just going to be tougher to get somewhere.

I would agree with EE there. I've been using a mouse for seven years now, and it would be really hard for me to get into the swing of things if I do ever get a tablet ( they're ridiculously expensive here ) and yes, it would be pretty hard to get some nice hair done and stuff just using a mouse. But hey, lasso tool. XD

@Jarrad - a lot actually here are "Seasoned" folks... at least those that I normally see... XD...

yeah, it all boils down to what you're comfortable in using... and what you have right now really...

In my case, what stopped me until recently was more a feelling of "whatever I try, nothing doing, no progress" (which now I realize was utterly ******ed). What I would love to see are courses on different techniques on colouring and making a decent background.

About the discussion whether to use a mouse or a tablet, which one would you recommend to someone who hasn't tried either yet ? (considering money is not a limiting factor)

Hrmm, well I think that depends on which you would personally feel more comfortable putting the effort into learning. Though, if overall speed factors into it, I think a tablet's built in pressure sensitivity function adds a lot down the road towards finishing things faster (because you don't have to worry about changing brush sizes to colour smaller areas, just press softer), but at the beginning when still getting the hang of things you aren't going to have the control yet to colour everything with a huge brush.
I really wish there was a way to try out a tablet before purchasing it, but I've never seen that kind of option anywhere. The stores around here never have a demo model set up or anything. :/ It's very hard to call one 'better' than the other, as both mouse and tablet just require dedication and an understanding of how they function and what limitations they pose that you need to learn to work around.

Chances are you already own a mouse, so you can give it a whirl and see how you feel about it. If you have an electronics store near you that has some sort of 'x many days to try it out' return policy, then maybe try snagging up a tablet for a few days and seeing what you think. Some people feel silly returning things after they've used them, but that might be the only option to try one out and if the store states a policy that you have so many days to return it even if you've used it, then that's a thing you can take advantage of to see what you think.

They are both going to feel odd though, but maybe it will give you a better idea of what you're getting into.

Thank you for your reply.

So, for someone who can draw, even a little, a tablet may be more useful to start with.

Personnaly, I can't draw so I'd better stick with the mouse as I don't have a way of testing a tablet beforehand.

So far I can only edit and make small modifications to already drawn art to customize my ressources. But I dream of being able to fully reproduce what I have in mind for my characters.

I'm not sure about in some places, but APPLE/Macintosh stores have try it out before buying set up. I was able to test out their intuos 4 and such tablets before buying one before :'o

My best buy has a set up, I live in a rather populated area (near Orlando) so that is a factor. I tried out a tablet there and after getting a feel of how it all worked It felt as natural as drawing on paper. That's why I ordered one (also it was on sale).

Yeah, I don't know why, even finding them in stores in Canada is difficult sometimes, let alone finding one set up. :/ That's cool that they have demos and such in some places! Certainly look around cabfe, maybe you'll find a place near you that will let you try one out.

Again, for me, it's the SPEED that a tablet offers that is the greatest blessing.

Oh god, I'm in the third age group, I'm above the average age, that makes me feel so old.

Anyway, (not very good) traditional drawing fan here! I just love the feeling of a pencil in my hand.

(Although, it would be nice if real paper had layers...)

I like art, but it's too easy for me to give up and do something else. Also I've taken two Photoshop classes and neither helped very much. :( All those tools and methods are still just as daunting as before.

I'd be interested in seeing how people draw and color something as small as a sprite. Probably it's much easier with a computer.

Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
