I'm hoping I'm posting this correctly and all, but I'm really desperate for help and ready to give up on ever using this part of the program.

I use RPG Maker XP, which I can barely find any information on, and I'm not even fully confident that anyone here posts about it, considering even the Q&A doesn't list anything on it. I dunno if that's because it's similar enough to another rpg maker program or if I'm literally the only person on the planet that uses it because I can't afford anything else, but anyway...

Onto the actual problem, every single time -- EVERY SINGLE TIME -- I try to use any global control switches for anything at all, it breaks the game.
Or more accurately, completely softlocks it, either by way of freezing the game entirely but letting the background music play, or by trying to call a common event and getting stuck endlessly looping the event. I have tried everything I can think of, but I can't seem to get it to just play, and I can use these switches for literally nothing because of it.

Is there some super obvious thing I've been missing that makes these switches work without freezing the game?
Is my copy of RPG Maker XP just glitched and I'll have to live with it?
Is it just that all RPG Maker XPs do this? (Though I've seen videos of control switches working properly so I'm pretty sure that's not the case)
Please help

Do you have any scripts? Some scripts use certain switches for certain things, and if you use those you will get unusual effect.s. For example, there are scripts to stop all movement, and it works by you turning on that switch, and then no one can move.

Nnnnno, I don't. Nothing script-wise has been added since I first downloaded the program. And there should be nothing to stop all movement, which it still technically doesn't do either.
Should I have a script for the switches?

Nope. Can you post a screenshot of the event that is bugging it then? We will need it to see what is going on. However, odds are high that when you turn on the switch you are activating an autorun or a common event that you forgot about, which is causing your soft lock, and you'll want to check all your events and common events to look for that.

All switches are causing the problem, every single attempt at doing a single switch.
But yeah, I can get a screenshot, or maybe a couple of them. Hang on

Ok, though all? Have you tried say switch 101?

Edit: Freezing but the music plays means it is calling an autorun, and if it is calling a common event that means you set it to trigger one based on that switch. Any of those that you see calling a common event endlessly you'll have to go to your common events and disable it from using that switch (it's in the settings for that common event).

...
...well now I've just made an ass of myself, though I will thank you greatly for even giving me the idea of checking my common events
For some reason a whole THREE of my common events were tied to the first switch because...????????????
I swear to god I didn't do that...

I'll try switch 101 tomorrow so I can preemptively save anyone else from me being an idiot, but it's pretty late for that right now
Thanks for the help anyway, though

It can happen if you accidentally check the check box, as the default is switch 1. Still, to avoid issues, I started my switches at 101 and went forward from there, because if you add scripts they will usually use something in the 1 - 100 range.

Though I also had no issues with switch 21 - 40 either, so it depends.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
