Our story begins 370 years before the Lady Nyx and Prince Dag began their investigations into why the Country of Lestive was wiped off the map, forcing so many people to flee, and eventually start the new kingdom of Thorntop.

It begins in the snowy little village of Snowdrift, where a Paladin is suffering from an illness that is destroying him, and with the Alchemist who is trying to find the cure.

You play as Xen(name optional), an adventurer who is hired by the mayor of Snowdrift to be added protection for Zaheer, the Alchemist, as he travels the Northern Snowfields looking for ingredigents that could help in developing the cure.

XEN (Name Optional)

ZAHEER

GRIMM

    • The game is a self contained story, with some open endness given it's place in the overall history of the world of Thorntop where it is based.

    • You will have access to a Crafting system that allows you to brew potions, or agument armors, weapons or accessories, or create delicious meals.

    • Spells and Skills will be awarded by a unique Gem System, that allows you to customise your characters skills and spells as you please (within their own area of expertise)
    • Respawning Enemies, once defeated, they will reappear after a set amount of time to allow you to scavange more items for crafting and sale.

The world of Thorntop began as a throwaway game idea called Royal Knights, on RPGmaker XP, which then morphed into an entire world, and as with any world there is much history that helps explain why things are the way they are in Thorntop.

One of thise things, is the destruction of Lestive, a once great country where magic was rife, and science was on the rise. The reason behind the terrible event has not yet been uncovered in full, but this game allows a peek into how Lestive became what it has in the more 'modern' world of Thorntop.

One day I hope for Corruption to become part of a larger Thorntop world, in games and books.

I think some of your images have gone walkies. There is just the hint of a top bar line for 2 in 'screenshots' spoiler and one in 'storyline plot' spoiler.

I like the innovative way you have shown us your cave dungeon, but I'd like to make a suggestion if I may.
The basic ground tile is a bit on the bland side, and I don't think a cave should have such a uniform floor. You can get away with it more easily in a small cave, but it's really noticeable in a large one like this, simply because there's so much floor. Here is a small example of what I mean. In this screenshot you can see several gradations of color on the floor (not talking about the somewhat ugly dark path, which I may remove).

This sounds an interesting start; good luck with it.

Sorry, was doing some editing to make the thread look a bit nicer. I'll have to sit down and fix it properly, but thank you for your comment. I haven't quite finished the cave yet, so the floor may change. lol.

My progress Update so far!

I have also uploaded a few more screenshots. Please let me know what you think! (the darkness on the maps is deliberate, Lestive is based in the artic circle of the world of Thorntop, so they are dark for a certain amount of months a year, they are in one of those cycles, it's mentioned in game. Figured I'd give some context.

Just a very important tip: if you're using a white color font, use black outlines! Same the other way around ;) Else it makes it very hard to read because sometimes it blends with the background. For example here:

About the game: I like the main logo and maps :3 Will give it a try when it's out along with many others :p :D (this is for IGMC right?)

It is indeed an igmc game.

I’m having trouble figuring out what you mean about the font but I’ll play about and see what I can do!

Battle Tutorial Concept...

Not very happy with it, but I don't know how else to do it!

@greensdream

Thank you for your comment. I still have 6 areas to start mapping and the caves to finish. So hopefully they’ll all look so good as these. Lol.

Ok, here's my updated progress. As you can see I am making significant progress with the game and now have a good 15 miniutes of solid gameplay.

Problems I've encountered
1. Worrying about how long I have left to finish the game. If I'm to bugtest it and polish it I'll have to have everything done by next friday so I can spend my very short holloween break testing it before submitting it by the 02/11/17 at the latest (to allow for issues with loading).
2. My mapping. I'm finding it very difficult to finish Hotspring Cave. I know if I had a few undistracted hours I could have it sorted, but on the plus side I've been motoring through my other maps.
3. Cutscenes... Man they take so long to go through, to make sure everythings spelt right and reads ok, and that the expressions match the words... whew. It'll be worth it, but so long.

On the plus side
1. Actual progress and gameplay!
2. Battles are working and randomised.
3. Entire first part of game up to first proper quest now complete!

I did a map, using a previous map I'd made for another game as a base as I hate mapping towns. I just had to show the comparison, because I think the changes are startling!

Base map

Mmy new town, nearly finished, just a few asethetic touches to add.

This looks promising! I really like that Xen's gender is ambiguous.

I'm glad you like that. Now if only the Mayor in Snowdrift would get on board with it. lol. But, he's a sort of set in his ways man, thankfully Xen just ignores it, they've heard it all before. lol.

Ok. My progress update.

Wow, I don't feel like I've got anything done at all this weekend. What with real life obligations coming up. And I'll likely get less done next week.... sadface. But I'm gonna keep plugging away at it and hope for the best.

One of the most annoying things about real life is when the people around you just don’t get why you enjoy making a game so much. My husband has agreed to help play test the game for me when it’s done, but for all his support he just doesn’t understand.

I still love him though.

Phew, todays update.

All maps are finally done. The eventing for all the maps is still underway. Some little cosmetic touches to be added when I get the chance. Dialogue is nearly halfway input.

This game is definately going to be over an hour long. But I intend to speed play it to test how short a time you can complete the game, and then fully test it by figthing every battle, crafting every item, collecting every gem, and talking to every NPC to see how long it really is.

I always forget how much work you have to put into these things.

On the plus side my parallax mapping and atmosphere adding Ii've been doing is getting better. I think the game looks good, and I can only hope others will think the story and little systems I've added make the game as great as I think they are.

I'm also thinking that Nanowrimo is going to be me writing a collection of scripts for my overall Thorntop Game world, which wouldn't hurt anything, I'd just not be able to use then for an future IGMC game. lol. But on a more serious note, I do think that would be a good idea, because Corruption is just a small part of the history of the overall world, and I'd love to actually finish other games in the series. One day, when I have all my history pinned down I'm hoping to have an open sandbox world to play in.

And if I managed to win the competion I might have a change of making that a reality. *grin*.

Been a while since I did a visual progress update. So here you are!

Now, just a quick chat.
I've had to remove a module of gameplay I'd planned on having in because time constraints simply won't allow me to do it. But when the contest, and Nanowrimo is over, I will go back and add it in as I had planned. So this game is going to be the 0.5 version.

Now, on the plus side, all I have left to do is add some movement into my dialogue scenes and then non stop work on the database for a day or two, alongside the final bits of eventing. The last thing I intend to implement is the crafting system, I'm going to have to cut down on a lot of what I was going to have in that too, but I think it might better fit the game if I don't have a really big crafting inventory.

Then it's non stop playtesting for like two days, and trying to rope other people into playtesting for me as well, then bugfixing for a day or two and then another playtest, and then submitting!

whew. Effort!

I lost all of my data for my game. Which has left me almost at square one. Luckily my maps could just about be salvaged thanks to the number of paralaxs and mapshots I tool. But all my eventing and databasing is gone, gone gone.

So depressing. I've spent the day sorting out the maps, and now at last I'm able to restart the long and ardous process of entering dialogue and cutscenes and databasing and troop practice. super sad face right now.

Thank goodness the error happened with a while to spare. I might just be able to salvage this!

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
