Hey all. Like most RPG's, I want the player to create their own character at the start of the game.
In combat, I hand animate the attacks every player / party member uses on the screen. The animation isn't just the "effect" of the attack (like a slash without the char shown), it shows the character as part of the animation slashing on the screen. If you don't know what I mean, look up LISA the painful RPG and watch the trailer.
The player character has close to 100-200 hand drawn animations. However, if that character were to be even slightly different (mustache, diff shoes) they'd need a whole other 100-200 animations just for that version of the main character. Combine that with the near infinite possible #'s of unique characters you could create at the start of the game, (clothes, skin tone, nose, mouth, ear, etc) and I'd be looking at, at least, hundreds of thousands of hand drawn animations in total. I love making my game, but not that much.
Here's my question. The vanilla character customizer allows the chibi stock sprites you make to engage in combat despite their many different appearances. Is there some way I can modify that system with my own hand-drawn art, so that custom characters can be shown on the screen in combat?
Sorry for the length, and thank you for reading.
