I've been running some tests to try editing my own parallax backgrounds, and running into an interesting problem which I bet there is some simple explanation for.

I'm using the Orange Map Shot plugin to take a snapshot of the entire map. Then I am using an image editor to alter that map, then loading it as a parallax in the editor. In this image it's behind the tiles perfectly (I'm keeping the editor tiles for testing):

However, when I playtest the game, everything is weirdly offset to the left and down, as you can see here:

I've tested this out on a few different maps, and I get a similar result each time. Sometimes it's offset on X axis only, sometimes it's offset on both axes. Every time, things are off to the left though, and appear perfectly lined up and fine in the editor.

At first I suspected the Map Shot plugin, but since the parallax lines up perfectly in editor, that doesn't figure to be the issue. Any thoughts?

Thanks!! :LZScheeze: :LZScheeze: :LZScheeze:

This is usually one or both of two mistakes:

1) to disable parallax movement function your parallax picture needs to start with a ! in the filename.
You cannot use parallax for mapping if it is still fully enabled.

2) the size of map and parallax picture are not conforming to each other.
Parallax picture in pixel needs to be 48 times the map size in tiles

for a tiny adjustmen on the above, if your map is 14x25 (14x48 & 25x48)
if your screen resolution is bigger then 15, make sure the mapsize height or width starts
with that number. or you still get some offset :)

but hte above are indeed the 2 most mistakes in parallaxing maps.

right, @ShadowDragon reminded me of the third problem - and that one is not only in parallax mapping but in every mapping.

3) screen size = minimum map size
If you increase the screen size beyond default, you need to make sure manually that all maps are at least screen sized. Add a black border around if you don't want bigger maps, but if a map is smaller than screen size the engine gets problems with displaying it and often loops the tiled map (which might be hidden behind the displaced overlay if it is only one or two tiles too small)

Many thanks to you both! The exclamation mark solved it, and I'm really grateful for the additional info.
