Hello, I'm fairly new to rpg maker and would like to import my own sprites. I did so with homemade characters and faces, without problem (by dragging them in the game folder) but it just doesn't work with Side View actors.

I have verified that my template is correct (576x384) and even renamed it to look like the original stuff (SV actors from the game).

Does someone know what's wrong ?

I can specify that I make my sprites on photoshop, and save it as a .png directly in the folder, if that's of any help.

Thanks for reading, hoping someone knows the solution !

When you say "it doesn't work", what does that mean? Are you putting the files into your folder (the sv_actors folder) and they're not showing up when you try to select the battler at all? Or are you able to select the battler but they don't show up correctly in the game?

Are you using any plugins?

Please provide some screenshots so we can see how they're set up, what happens when you try to use them, and your plugins.

Also, what version of the engine are you using? I believe there was a problem with one or two versions where new resources weren't being shown when you tried to select them.

Thanks for your answer !

I mean the sprites don't even show up when i try to select them before even running the game : I can only see the original options to choose from (Actor1_1 to Actor3_8).

I don't have any plugins installed.

I Have tried other names than "Actor3_9.png" for my sprites, still doesn't work ! My version is the 1.6.2 of Rpg maker MV, on mac OS. I hope those clarifications help !

What if you rename one of the default images (make a backup of it), then give your sprite that name? Will it show then?

This seems very similar to an old problem, which I thought was resolved several builds ago.

If you close RM right down then launch it again, does the sprite show up then?

Sorry I tried, and it doesn't work, I changed the name to Actor1_1.png, still nothing. I also noticed that I have 2 plugins, wich are automatically installed : "community basic" and "Madewith MV", tough i doubt that they have an effect on the sprites animation. Have you tried the last suggestion/question of closing the engine first?

Also, have you tried actually saving the file outside first and dragging it to the folder after like what you did with other resources (since you said the others worked with dragging while you directly saved this sv actor from photoshop into the folder)

Yeah, the plugins are fine. Plugins don't affect the editor - only the game. I asked because I wasn't sure if your issue was in the editor itself, or when you were playing the game.

So is this not showing up when you go to select side view battlers for your actors? The list just starts at Actor1_2.png now?

56kb seems large. The RTP sprites are only 28. Could there be something in the format - even though you've saved it as a png, the software can't read it? Your resolution is 72x72 but I don't know if that's correct - I can't find the resolution on my images (using Paint.net). Check some of the default images and see what their settings are there.

I'm afraid I'm not "arty" enough to help troubleshoot that kind of thing.

Yes I tried closing it multiple times, and also saving the .png to my desktop and dragging it manually, still nothing. I believe it has indeed something to do with the quality of the image. I use photoshop CS6 to edit the sprites, and I use the original sprites as template. It is weird that mines have a greater kb, I will try to modify it and post the results. Thanks !

Can you try getting paint.net, then open your png in paint.net and save it as png using that and try if it works..

Personally I had problems before with Photoshop and downloaded JPGs, being those downloaded JPGs doesnt open in photoshop, but when I open them first in Paint.net and save them, I can now open them in PS. So it might be that the default settings or something in photoshop has some differences. Its a different format (JPG vs PNG) and slightly different case but I think its worth a try if you have some time, Paint.net is free anyway though IDK if it has a version that works in Mac

Does Paint.NET have a Mac version?

What if you try this approach:

- open one of the RTP SV sprites in Photoshop
- drag in your own sprite as a new layer over the RTP sprite
- delete the layer with the RTP sprite
- save without changing any of the settings - just the name (or make a copy of the RTP sprite before doing this, and just save over the RTP sprite to ensure it doesn't make any other changes)

I'm just grasping at straws here.

I know GIMP does funny stuff with the index depending on the colours that you use, and that can affect whether it can be loaded or not, or what it looks like after saving.

I will try it, but it doesn't seem to run on mac os, there's an application called "pinta" that seems to be the mac equivalent. Should I try that instead ?

Imho, at this point, better try anything that might provide an answer/fix..

but Id try Shaz' suggestion first of editing an actual file from the RTP and see if that also makes it unusable, at least we will be able to prove if its really because of PS or not

Ok, I tried it and it still doesn't work, so I think we can assume that the problem comes from the resolution of my sprites, because it's the only difference between them and the originals. for a weird reason (I'm not very informed about how this works) the sprites I made are much heavier. (56kb) anyway to downgrade it ?

Can you actually try to do something like

- Open an RTP SV actor file
- Do a minor edit, anything really even as simple as adding one pixel of art
- Save it and see if it works

If it works, then its its probably your image that is the problem, if it doesnt work, its photoshop.

PS: On the file settings or image/canvas size in Photoshop, there should be a box there called "Resolution" or something close to it.

I did so adding a single pixel in the file, and when I run Rpg Maker, the pixel doesn't show. I also tried to just open the RTP SV file in photoshop and save it back without adding anything, and it seems that just the fact of opening it photoshop increase the size by a lot, I think 4 times bigger.

the weird thing is, that I used photoshop to modifiy the face and the walking animation of my character, and that it did work perfectly.

The faces and walking animations are much smaller - especially if you only have one character in the sheet, rather than 8.

Is there another image editing program you can try? You need something that will allow you to have transparency in the image. Layers and grids are bonuses.

Otherwise someone who knows Photoshop might be able to give you some ideas on how to keep the file size down.

Just one question:
If you don't drag it into the folder but use the resource manager to import it, does it work then?
If it works when using the resource manager, then most likely you mixed up your project folders.

Sorry, I thought there was no ressource manager in Rpg maker MV, can you please tell me how to access it ?

Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
