Damage formula inconsistency

I'm not sure how to manage the consistency of the damage you deal when all of the attack/defenese parameters of both the character and the enemy have been set to the general range you want.
For example, at level 1, when I attack a weak enemy the damage is roughly 30 ish. The problem is that it varies extremely inconsistently anywhere from 20 to sometimes 40, which I think makes skills that are stronger but not overpowered somewhat pointless without being too strong for enemies of an early level. Normal attacks could potentially do more damage and it's hard to balance without lowering the normal attack attack damage too low.
Is there a way to tighten up the range of the damage you deal with in-game utilities? Or is there a plugin that would work better?

Edit: Oh okay! Well thanks then guys. I see now how the variance percentage works. I didn't mess with it too much, but that makes sense.

there is absolutely no inconsistency in the damage formula - unless you set that by setting the variance of a skill.

However, what sometimes happen (especially to new users) is that they don't know all effects that may modify the results.

If you can give us screenshots of actor, actor class, skill and enemy then we can tell you exactly how much damage the result will be (unless you're using plugins to change the basics, or equipment to change the values)

Yes. The Variance, as Andar said, set near the skill damage formula... it makes the damage change randomly from plus to minus variance percent. For example, a damage 100 with variance 20 would go from 80 to 120.

If your problem is with the randomization of the base attack then your troubles are with the Variance as @Waterguy said.

If after that the damage formula is still not where you want it then providing screenshots as @Andar said is going to give you the best chance at help.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
