So I'm looking to add some element-based damage over time states to my game, but I can't see to figure out how.
Does anyone know how to do this in MZ?

I don't quite understand what you need, this only in battle or on a map?
If it's on the map you can use battle animations without graphics, only with color flash.

Sorry I didn’t explain too well. What I meant was skills can have an element, like fire or ice, and I was wondering how I could make the a posion like state deal elemental damage when it deals damage.

you'll need a plugin for that as by default the states do not use any damage element, only general negative HP regeneration to do damage.

This is my battler placeholder image trying out art styles too I want to fake a backview battle system
I think I will want portraits and battle sprites to be 2D and stick to pixel art for overworld not 100%sure but pretty sure its easier to make pixel art for overworld sprites, events and maps and stuff.
