Darkness Ascension is a game created for Rpgmaker Vx Ace. The game was done in just 22 days to participate in the Indie Game Contest 2014. It was made by me, some friends tried to help me, but I could not implement or add the game what they did, unfortunately, at run time. Because of the little time to miss the deadline...

I'm planning a remake of this version soon, I will make it better and add some new  features and skills, and also a better narrative and more types of scenarios and new map design.

Thanks!

The Story of Darkness Ascension

Halbert Halfgrand was the heir of a legendary dynasty, descendant of the founders of the kingdom of Taldorn in the island of  Hossus.

When reached sufficient age, he decided to be a priest, not giving heed to his father and disowns the post that is his by inheritance, the title of Taldorn lord protector.

He studied hard in another region, Highrock, more precisely in the temples of Callen and Wasgramor. Started to become obsessed with the god of Darkness and outraged by the existence of his servants, who acquired minor powers in exchange for their souls and learn to use tricks that the gods prohibit to mortals.

Halbert took the decision to join the knights and priests began their training. For years he trained to kill mages, to capture them and kill them, their training was cruel, but he achieved his ultimate goal: become a killing machine, full of tricks and ruses to defeat opponents that would be almost equal to the gods.

For years he worked for the Templar Knights and their order of witch hunters. Hunting and torturing a lot of suspects of devotion to the dark arts, and his life was devoted to the church until he received a letter, his father was dying.

Halbert asked permission to leave his temple and departed on a long journey to Taldorn. Upon arriving in the capital, was approached by soldiers of his father that gave him an arrest warrant. Halbert did not accept it, and then fought bravely for his life, until he was wounded and be unconscious by a knight's attack.

Halbert woke up and open his eyes, seeing just darkness. They left food and water every day, but never gave him a word. He was just about to go crazy, but his obsession for revenge, not left him to perish, began to train his body waiting for opportunity, and to be as healthy as possible when he finds the opportunity to escape.

After a long time being locked up in that dungeon, Halbert sees a man in a hood and hear words of hope. But Halbert has experience of years analyzing lies in the eyes of his victims, and the guy did not seem sincere, something was wrong at that visit.

The man approached with drawn sword, Halbert pretended not to notice until he arrived at a proper distance, Halbert broke his arm and killed him breaking his neck, grabbed his clothes and then thought that it was the time that he waited so long throughout their time in captivity. And then the game begins.

I'm going to be checking this out tomorrow and will make sure to leave some feedback. The game looks good already.

Edit: So I started playing. The game looks and feels seriously awesome. At first I wouldn't have guessed at all that it was made in RPG maker. This is really good work how you made it so different to what RM games normally are like. I also really dig the atmosphere and the graphical style of this game.

The fighting is really cool too. Each impact feels powerful and satisfying. I did, however, find the controls to be a bit slow on response at times, and as a result got hit and even killed a few times. Sometimes aiming in the enemy's direction is a bit tricky too. I think it would be very nice to have a health bar on the screen, so that I can see how much health I've got during the combat without having to go into the menu. Also I tried to use a potion via a hotkey '1', but for some reason it didn't work. I like it that the game doesn't punish you too harshly for dying and that you simply restart back at the last checkpoint.

I am kind of stuck at the moment. I think I've walked around the entire first area, but I can't find where to go. I also found the guy who sells me stuff, but his area doesn't lead anywhere else. Oh, one thing when buying stuff from him, I think it'd be better to have just 1 option for buying, rather than buying items, weapons, and armours separately. Because you have to quit the dialogue every time you want to check the other one. I came across those invisible monsters too. They are pretty hard. Take ages to die. Though I wonder, do I have to fight them to get further? I went inside their little area, but couldn't find anything there, so I assume they're optional? I think a map of the area would be VERY useful in a game like this, because it is pretty dark and so it's hard to tell where I have to be going.

And last thing, there are a few typos that I came across, such as 'itens' instead of 'items' (both in the beginning dialogue and when buying stuff), and also 'prisioner' instead of 'prisoner' when talking to that guy who sells stuff.

So far the game is really promising and just feels awesome, so hopefully those few minor issues can be fixed so that they do not ruin the experience.

Thank you for your review man!

And about the grammar errors, I'm very glad that you tell me the errors, I will correct everything about it.

About the first map, the door is not much evident, but it is in the north of the first region, You will find a dark place that is the entrance to the another region.

I will note every suggestion to a next update! And when it's done, I will let you know by this topic.

Thanks. I've found it now and it is very hard to see, because it blends in with the background. I also was stuck for a bit in the next room, trying to find where to go. I'll definitely say a map would be good here, and also if possible some kind of pointers or markers that show where the doorways are, or maybe a way to illuminate the dark, because some paths can be very hard to see.

So I've gotten quite far now. Those evil spirits take ages to kill. I ended up skipping those last few rooms by just running through them and I think I got to the final boss, though I can't seem to beat him. How much health does he have? I've managed to corner him and to keep hitting him repeatedly in that corner for like 5 minutes straight, but he won't die. Is there some other way that I have to kill him?

Also, are there other moves that I can do apart from a regular sword swing? I can't remember if that was mentioned in the tutorials at the start.

I was planning to add more moves but the lack of time made me to let it for a future update.
But it is like a demo for the next versions. When the defense of the enemy surpass your attack, your attack gives just -1 Hp, só I think that you are in low level or with a low attack weapon. I think that he have 60 points of Defense. And in the game it is possible to you to find weapons with 120 until 200+. Fighting or  searching in the barrels and crates. And the enemies will give more Xp and better weapons when you reaches level 10, than level 20, 30, 40, 50 will make the enemies to give more experience. But if you could reach 70 - 100 of attack. Yeah that boss is really strong hahaha, but it is just for this version. In the new update I will redesign all regions and the dungeon layout. Adding more variety for the enemies so that I will not need to use this resource of the strong Boss.

Yeah, I 'm thinking to do this, the game that I send here is not the game in the initial design. I was out of time in the middle of the game production and I was forced to change directions, so if you notice, I don't even had time to add armors. I lose too much time with the 3D design, the light/shadow design in the gameplay and also the battle programming. I'm just taking a rest now and I will see the results of the contest and I will make a better version, I'm think even to remake the whole game with more planning and following the original project. So this actual game could be consider a complete concept game that can be bigger and better in the future with some more care and production time.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
