Sorry! I missed the previous update somehow! Believe me, I'm following your progress on this one very closely!
As to the first. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I know I've had random crushes on people much older than me simply because they did something nice to me when I was in a tough situation! And that's not even life/death. When faced with life/death, I can DEFINITELY believe it!
It'd certainly prove an entertaining plot point as well.
As to the second...
Well. You could do as many of the games you seem to be inspired by have done: more RECRUITABLE characters than can fit in your party, and certain choices made throughout the game will determine which ones you keep.
You'd need to some how ensure you'll never go over whatever limit you impose on party size though!
This'll carry with it a nice bonus of extra replayability for those who "gotta have em all" - since they CAN'T in a single play through, they'll play and play and play until they've exhausted every possible party combination.
