I'm not fond of the gust-of-wind thing either. Well, not because of any awkward feelings but just because I think it's dumb. And I agree with the NANA example that just because it's sex it doesn't mean it's fanservice. Saikano, Koi Kaze and Onegai Teacher for example used it in a good dramatic way.

I also have differing opinions on the "camera panning over beach-time fun" scenes you often see. Basically, if it's like the photography you'd see of a swimsuit model, that's fine. But while I do enjoy breast bounce I think it's silly when they're the only things moving in the scene. Minus extra points if it has the "boing" sound. But, say, Yukikaze from Dog Days riding a chocobo and bouncing all over is fine though LOL.

I guess I aim for "a higher calibre" when it comes to fan service.

I'd like to see more male fanservice.
Although I am a guy and am 95% out of touch with what girls want, 4 of the original 6 artists during the character design stage were women. While it won't transition fully to the new unified artist, the core designs were drawn by women with "hot guy" in mind for 3 characters at least, not counting whoever else they attached to. So all I can say is "I'll try".

Dunno about the technicalities, but I can say overt fanservice of any kind mainly makes me sigh and lose respect for the media. I may tolerate it in anime coz the industry is simply swamped in it at the moment and I have no input there (Jesus Kill la Kill was a struggle, fanservice of the stupidest kind in all directions. Just make a dayum hentai and get it out of your bloody system), but if I see it in a run of the mill RM game I will automatically think the maker is a childish dolt and not respect them at all.

And no, one or two cheeky moments in the game that could be a tiny bit riske aren't fanservice. That's fine. But constant panty shots or tits and ass are. It just feels childish and it makes me tired and go "oh for Frick's sake, really?"

Can't talk about male fanservice since I haven't seen it done so badly outside the yaoi genre, and there it's the main focus *shrug*

I dunno, I assume fanervice is aimed at 14 year old males mostly, and I'm not in that demographic so I do not appreciate it at all. It's unwelcome as far as I'm concerned outside of actual hentai/ecchi devoted stuff. In my view, if you have to rely on that on your game, your game must be pretty ****ty already :V

Edit: not to confuse fanservice with good looking characters. Let's be fair, everyone enjoys nice looking designs and nobody's gonna blame a designer for that. But it IS fanservice when, for example (and I am not making this up) the female protagonist is wearing only a red bikini armor and a cape, and her breasts are bigger than her head. Please no. It just screams to me "ABORT ABORT DON'T TOUCH THIS PIECE OF CRAP GAME". And why would I? It certainly says a lot about what the developer or designer thinks about characters. I'm not going to take any warrior in a god damn bikini seriously, male or female, outside a porn game.

I am a Rise fan and a Sailor moon fan. I am however a male also. My avatar can be decieving. Lol.

I feel like there should be equality in sexy outfits for both genders. It doesn't even have to be forced on the player, but the option is always nice and considerite.

First off, to be honest, I don't see much of it because I'm not a big gamer in the traditional sense and I don't watch anime. Nevertheless, it's still obvious in the adverts I see for games that many cater to it. And Indrah's bolded statement sums up my feelings for it. If you want to display that kind of stuff don't hide behind it as "fanservice" - make the obvious smut you want to and be done with it. It's much appreciated to know that Game A will have it and Game B will not. (Or, whatever media type).

And I get that my opinions on it are not likely the most popular, but it's still how I feel about it.

^^ What mlogan says, yeah.

To clarify, I perfectly enjoy fanservice: in hentai/yaoi. Because that's what I'm LOOKING FOR when I watch/read/play those GENRES. I play rpgs for different reasons, not to, I dunno, what do people do with fanservice in normal media, anyway? Drool? Go"hur hur"? Rub one out? (I don't even know, just sounds way distracting to me)

Another example of terrible fanservice that I just remembered: this one time I was playing a horror/mystery/action RM game, and the protag was a girl. Not bubbly or slutty or anything, a normal, kinda goth vibe girl in a cursed schol sort of setting. And then combat happened. And in her standby animation, where she did the "bobbing up and down" perpetual motion kind of thing, her breasts bounced all over the place and her skirt flew up magically to show her panties with every other frame. I mean, SERIOUSLY? It completely broke my stride and made me fricking disgusted with the damn game. Where was this coming from? Why would such a character behave that way? It completely ripped me out of the game and I lost all respect for it. Fu*k that ****.

I just wanna say, that if you don't like fanservice it's fine, but the fanservice in kill la kill wasn't stupid IMO it was in service of the themes of the show, which were actually pretty deep themes about how clothing obfuscates who we really are and projects a image that may not be genuine. It's really weird no one seems to analyze anything that isn't dark and anything that is dark gets a free pass at being seen as deep (like Madoka Magica which like kill la kill is a magical girl show and never got beyond saying people get sad when bad things happen but is heralded as some ingenious thematic plot.)

Nope. You are, of course, more than entitled to your own opinion, but I can only see kill la kill as a somewhat decent pretense BURIED under mountains of fanservice. Even if you try to argue most of it is done "in comedy", there is literally NO REASON their fanservice suits could not have covered more skin. Or the characters needed to sprawl around for cameltoe shots and similar crap. Ultimately it comes front loaded with a lot of bullcrap excuses, but that's all they are. There's been a lot of discussion about Kill la Kill and I don't like it enough to go that deep into it, but it was just offputting.

Problem with fanservice in anime is not that it exists, it's that it's EVERYWHERE and it's become the norm. Even genres that are not aimed at the "horny 14 year old" demographic tend to have it to some degree, it's become so pervasive it's honestly tiresome.

I'm not arguing it's being done in comedy though, I'm saying it's done in service to the theme, but I digress. It's not like I can't see why people would be put off by it.

The second point is a reflection of the actual anime market. Shows without marketable characters (I.E. cute girls) don't sell figures or blu-rays so they're less profitable, which is why we get so much fanservice. Even for me it gets a little tiring, to the point I almost stopped watching anime all together cause about all we get are fanservice-y series and hardly anything really fun or creative (though as I explained earlier getting rid of fanservice probably won't help if we don't get better writers). The only thing I really watch is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and that I know is good case I've read the manga for 5 years and I know it continues to be good.

Wow...I didn't imagine this topic would be so divisive. While I don't have any strong feelings towards it, I still dislike fanservice, mostly because, to me, it feels pretty pointless. It won't stop me from playing a game or watching an anime, provided that the show/game has something of value to offer other than fanservice.

I've been rather hesitant to post in this topic because I lacked the confidence in how I might express my thoughts. I'm rather vehement regarding this issue and so I was worried about offending anyone who happens to ENJOY fanservice. But Indrah said a lot of what I had been wanting to say, and so I will pipe up and say my own two cents.

I hate blatant fanservice. I tried ONE Compile Heart game (Record of Agarest War Zero), and that was enough to tell me that I will NEVER play another Compile Heart game. I remember seeing the occasional article about Fairy Fencer F and being initially interested in it because it was an RPG. I checked out its website, and.... bam, Compile Heart game. On the character page, I see that the main character is male, and that most of the party members to fill his team will be female. Bad start, that seems to be a common recipe for Compile Heart games. Then I see the female character named Harley, with big breasts and ample cleavage, and EVEN IN HER CHARACTER BIO it says, "She also seems completely oblivious of her own sex appeal, as well as the effect it might have on those around her." SCREW THIS, that's all I need to know that this game is going to use the same lame jokes that Record of Agarest War used. I'm imagining the type of cutscenes that could be in that game and I'm cringing already.

A game that feels like it's built FOR fanservice leaves me very uncomfortable and very self-conscious about the type of game I'm playing. I live on my own, and so really, who cares what I choose to play, but I don't feel right playing those games, and most importantly, I simply don't enjoy the constant boob-jokes, panties shots, and erotic popsicle sucking. It is completely unnecessary for a video game, as far as I'm concerned, and I actively avoid it in the games I play. There are SOME exceptions. I will play and enjoy Disgaea games for the games that they are, but I don't like any segment of the game where it uses fanservice in what I consider a distasteful way.

While I primarily hate the fanservice gags, fanservice character design is a little offputting for me, too, but this largely depends on execution. I will take Lulu from Final Fantasy X as an example, as I'm replaying that game right now. In my opinion, her character design is ridiculous. Why is she dressed in such a way? Why do voluptuous characters always have to expose ridiculous amounts of cleavage? However, what I appreciate and respect, is that despite her "in your face" costume design, there are NO jokes or character dialogue directed at her breasts. The worst offense the game commits is giving Lulu a ridiculous victory pose where she bends down to brush dirt off her dress. I feel like if you want to include some amount of fanservice, this is the best option possible. There are no jokes that undermine her character, no jokes that leave me feeling awkward and uncomfortable. And the fact that no character addresses it, it helps the story feel more mature and engaging. The moment Wakka or whoever says anything about her breasts is the moment I snap out of the story and start to take it less seriously.

So bringing this back to RPG Maker... ultimately, you can provide however much fanservice YOU want to add. But know that it's not tolerated by everyone, and you have to be prepared for a smaller target audience (I think it's smaller? Who knows, maybe it's larger...). Hopefully, you can try to be more subtle with it, and show SOME restraint with the jokes. I, for one, will never ever ever include fanservice in a game I make, so long as I have the authority to veto it.

The hilarious thing is that the internet was up in arms about the 'silly design' of the main character in Mevius Final Fantasy.

Gender equality, much?

So here's a question, how much fanservice is too much? For me it depends on the narritive you're trying to present. For a scene to really be fanservice  it s generallyly got to be light hearted, so in a story with a lot of  drama stuffing a ton of fanservice in will take away from that.

Also while I'm on it, does anyone think that a character's personality, one of a seductress or a literal succubus for example, could get away with more fanservice on their part.

EDIT: Fixed, with non-spelling/grammar additions underlined.

Indrah and mlogan, From personal experience I actually disagree with the "Just make a dayum hentai and get it out of your bloody system" line, although I agree that there are many times when it is well-founded. This is just because I think a number of fanservice shows would suffer if they were an all-out hentai. The same for games too. Even some with hentai origins, weird as that may sound. Taking the Nanoha franchise for example (sorry mlogan for bringing up another anime), I think it'd loose it's main attractions (great story pacing, overall plots and combat) if it had to shoe in or even focus on graphic sex.

A counter example would be something like Infinite Stratos. Let me tell you Dragnfly LOVES mecha musume. LOVES them. So much so that I've played horrible game just because they had those types of characters. But IS was so pointless I had to stop before s1 ended. So I don't give fanservice an automatic pass either.

But really, I wasn't talking about RM games that were constantly throwing fanservice at you. It's not that I didn't see a non-hentai boobiefest, it's that I didn't see anything at all. I think that there are different levels of fanservice, as many others have said. And on a 0-5 scale (0 being none and 5 being how-is-this-not-called-porn?) I'd put my target at a 2 or 3. But I was seeing constant 0.

I've been rather hesitant to post in this topic because I lacked the confidence in how I might express my thoughts.<snip>

Harmill, congrats on voicing up. I have some very close friends with the same hesitations on forums and it's always good to see people bite the bullet and say what's on their mind. No cred lost for you. Instead, cred gained. I'm aware that any amount of fanservice will alter the player base. So will RTP vs custom, parallax vs tile, chiptune vs orchestral, anime-influenced art vs other and especially other graphic content/themes. I look at it as a huge pile of pluses and minuses that all amount to pretty much the same because there's so many variables and so many different levels to each thing that one can only use general judgment on if they'll get an overall bigger or larger player base.

I like your FFX example. Though I don't consider Lulu's cleavage to be the biggest offender with that dress LOL. It's just a ludicrous dress. But the dudes in that game strike me as the types to not gawk and thus there was no need to comment. The male characters likely all noticed off-camera and Wakka/Auron/Kamari(?) were all with Lulu for a long time so unless her dress actually fell off they'd have nothing to say. This leaves Tidus who also likely noticed but didn't need to comment. I don't think FF7 had any comments about Tifa's giant boobs either (an FF7 pro might be able to correct me). For anything I have against some of the FF games this is actually good writing. Fanservice isn't just about handling T&A responsibly, but with respect to the other characters' personalities too.

The hilarious thing is that the internet was up in arms about the 'silly design' of the main character in Mevius Final Fantasy.

Hotfirelegend, thanks. I didn't even know about MFF. *googles* LOL. I'd say the outfit is pretty ridiculous. Not like a woman wearing the same thing wouldn't look ridiculous too but at least I'd have a higher chance of enjoying looking at it:) My gender equality is "fanservice for all, acceptance for all." So if MFF's target audience likes looking at that guy, more power to them.

So here's a question, how much fanservice is too much? For me it depends on the narritive you're trying to present. For a scene to really be fanservice  it s generallyly got to be light hearted, so in a story with a lot of  drama stuffing a ton of fanservice in will take away from that.

I can take pretty much any amount so long as it's balanced by other qualities. My Infinite Stratos example above is an example of a fail whereas, say, Highschool DxD (IMO has far more fanservice) managed to stay cool due to superior art, music, character designs and a decent story. Or to take a game example, Ar Tonelico 1-2 vs. 3. I adored 1 and 2 (especially 2) but 3 lowered the quality on everything and jacked the fanservice up to 11. It's 3D models use a wonky head proportion and are animated badly so the 3D fanservice isn't well-done enough to offset the already-bad story/characters/combat. It's 2D fanart is impacted by, despite having far more girls to get fanservice CGs, their designs are mostly bad and the fanservice choices are poor. It's just lose lose lose with no gain.

I do think the personality or role has a lot to do with what a character wears, how they act and how the camera/scenes treat them. If they're a succubus who isn't sexy and putting up a flair then isn't she just bad at her job like a ninja covered in rhinestones? Unless of course the story had a reason for her not to be sexy, but that's of course beside the point of your question.

Thanks, everyone. Good input all around. And Nirwanda, awesome avatar. I loved that game.

Kill la Kill doesn't try to excuse anything. Latter half of the show features naked men with literally holsters covering their dongles and dingleberries, spreading eagle on mechs that reveal their full buttocks. Actually there's probably more nude male butt in this show than in most real pornos ever, not to mention hentai. I'm not going to argue the prevalence of pointless fanservice, of which there is an abundance, but Kill la Kill is perhaps one of the few shows where the fanservice makes sense because it's actually a part of the core plot. I assume you didn't finish the show, because if you had, this would become plain obvious.

((Nah, I know she finished the show. Now, don't get me wrong, I adore KLK with a completely irrational passion, but their reason for why the outfits 'needed' to be scanty came across largely as an excuse. An excuse that did indeed tie into the plot! but an excuse nonetheless.))

My views on fanservice depend on a lot of things. If it's popping up in something where it feels out of place, disrupts the tone, or takes something that was rather fanservice free and just suddenly BOOM there's some fanservice - that riles me up. (Same when fanservice belittles a character's narrative in some way))  But if I'm going into something KNOWING it's gonna have fanservice, well - I've done that to myself.  Using KLK as an example again, I knew what I was getting myself into there. Sure, I rolled my eyes at a few particular moments, and there's a couple that made me cringe (though I think those were supposed to make me cringe), but KLK was made with an audience in mind. I've watched all of High School of the Dead and read a huge chunk of the manga too. That's WAY worse than KLK, but, again, it was made to BE fanservice.  ((I would sooner fault both of these series on the fact that their characters are regretably pretty flat and one-trick ponies from the start to finish/where-ever-HSofD-is))

Same with the aforementioned Record of Agarest War - one look at the website (and if I remember correctly, the bonus content that came with the game) told me all I needed to know about that game. That being, for me to not to bother with it at all.

Flipside, looking at Free, the anime, (or... idk some otome games probably. not thinking of any RPG examples off the top of my head), went into that knowing to expect pans of naked man torso and speedo shots - got exactly that. I'm not about to sit there and fault the show for being exactly what it knew it wanted to be or consider the creators immature for pandering to an audience that was totally going to toss money at them for this. (even if nippleless man torsos equally make me roll my eyes as much as jiggly boobs)

Where fanservice does actively bother me, is when it comes out in something that for the most part wasn't being made to be a piece of fanservice. Where it breaks the tone of the game so much or destroys the integrity of a character so strongly that it's done irreversible damage towards the story's ability to be taken seriously.

It's a fine line sort of thing in some cases.

As for why I don't make games with fanservice in them - that's just not the sort of story/tone/theme I want to create. Plus, fanservice, whether I can find it in my heart to excuse it or not, has never been a personal interest of mine. (Unless someone wants to make a game where EVERY character wears glasses - there's my sort of fanservice ;D )

yo, wow, that got long sorry.

I am not a lover of fan service either but I don't see the fans services as a bad thing.

fan service are what they tell "service for the fans"

but people have to know fans services are simply here for offert sensual vue of  their character.

you have also to know  fans service are not always wrong when they enter the context like makio-kuta said.

ALSO generally fan services are often use as a "joke" made by the authors.

that's make the authors having a lack of imagination ? nope currently this really hard to doing fan services jokes without this sound totally wrong and out of subject.

and some author who made manga based on the Fan services are really good like To love ru who are the one full of fan services. but even this a awesome manga extremely popular by a lots of japanese and even a lots of american and canadian.

Also they have manga who made a caricature of the fan services.

like Amagi brilliant Park the episode 13 when they make the promotionnal video for the park

the fairy of heart who totally somewhat "pervy" ask for more "male fan service" and then finally the picture in the video are the security guard who are not really beautiful and the manager of the video said this was because he lacked of budget. you can here notice a joke made by the author of the Light Novel Shoji Gatoh.

I disgress a little

Also ...you have to take the context of the character ...exemple if the author decide to make him pervert....and not putting "fan service" that somewhat not really fit into the main character

if I take exemple in Dakara H dekinai

where the main character is a damn pervert and he proudly assume it if you remove all the "fan services" in the story  then....poor little main character he don't see anything...

so for conclude

fan services are not bad as long

  • they fit the context

If "fanservice" means showing men and women skins to arouse the player, I say it's depend on the game. Due to the nature of the trope being rather immature and silly, it takes a lot consideration for the developer to integrate it into the story and theme and tone of the story in order to get it right. Conidering the word, you probably need to create "fans" that are to be "served", meaning that you need to make sure the players are attacted to your character and story first before you deploy stuff to impress them.

First, the initial draft of a character can determine whether fan service works or not. In Tekken, you have Nina Willaims - the mysterious spy wearing a tight, dark purple suit. In Street Fighter, you have Ryu - a typical shonen gi-wearing hero who gets bulkier and more attractive with each game goes. Meanwhile, Ar tonelico characters are based on fetish stereotypes, but the base premise is how the character develop within the story where females are submissive dominant, As a whole, these characters look hot, they make sense within the contexts, and they're memorable, so the escating fan service is likely to be successful. On the other hand, you have characters like Miharu Hirano, who wears a swimsuit into the battlefield for no reason, which makes the character looks really silly in comparison.

Next, you have to consider the theme and tone of the story as well as the characters' state and development. Characters who are iconic and sexual attractive need to blend in with the setting. If your game story is about playing beach volleyball and messing around, the bikini-clad men and women will make sense, but if your game is about surviving a zombie apocalypse, huge breasted and improperly clothed characters will look horrible and unbelievable. Nina Willaims' spysuit works because her spysuit goes along with her darker and more mature storyline. Ryu's huge muscle works because he is a pinnacle of a shonen action hero. Katara's increasing revealing outfits in Avatar: The Last Airbend works because she is supposely growing up and becoming more action-orient. Ar Tonelico heroines' strip shows also work because stripping is a game mechanic and the games compensate by trying to establish the them as human and as lovable as possible. On the other hand, Miharu is not that memoriable despite her skin and attitude, as I had to check Tekken Wikia simply to get her name right.

Don't sprout sex jokes in a life-and-death situation because they're immature. Don't emphasize huge breasts in a horror and depressing show because nobody will care. Don't dress up characters for no reason because they'll look terrible (unless you make the costumes optional and the players choose to dress them up. That's their preferences). On the other hand, do cooperate fanservice with the game's setting, tone, logic, and purposes. Do compensate character's "sex object" premise by giving them proper characterization and development. Lasy but not least, do everything you can to get the fans to like your characters. When the players tart to like thehe characters, fan service will likely to work and make them even more iconic and loveable.

I guess we can chalk Miharu up as a big design fail because I'd completely forgotten she existed. LOL.

I agree with getting people to like the character first. I use a flow of: 1) attract them to the story with characters that look interesting and appealing. 2) hook them with the character's quirks, story and personality. 3) added bonus.

The hilarious thing is that the internet was up in arms about the 'silly design' of the main character in Mevius Final Fantasy.

Gender equality, much?
IMHO he'd look better shirtless, but if they give cray cray designs to women, then I don't see why not Men too! (Just, I wouldn't do it)

I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? No-one c
So I was playing with filters and this looked interesting...
