Designing a world around platforming?

I wanted to make the game a sort of puzzle platformer, but I don't know how to blend either of those things into my world design.

For the first actaul town, I was think of making the entire thing build over top of a seemingly bottomless pit, so that you would have to platform between larger areas, and maybe have small areas where encounters would happen.

For the second town, third area, and final dungeon, I'm not entirely sure. A general example would be greatly appreciated.

are we talking metroidvania sidescroller or final fantasy tactics with layering maps?

We're talking top-down Poke`mon RPG Maker XP **** because I haven't figured out how to to complex, well, anything? If another style would help thegameplay, I'd change, but the handful of graphics I've made have been for a Mother/Pokemon OneShotish style.

In that case, the closest you can probably get is something like Golden Sun I imagine. So platforming would entail jumping across a single tile and maybe you could incorporate Pokemon's ledge mechanic as well.

I'm sorry, I've never heard of Golden Sun. Could you send me a screencap or video?
