Did you tweak stats on your first game?

So when all of you created your first game, did you make any changes to item/weapon/actor/enemy/skills/states stats? Or did you create it using the default stats? I can't imagine a game would be very well balanced using the defaults, but for my first game (which I don't expect to be anything amazing) should I even worry about them or should I just concentrate more on story, mapping, puzzles, etc?

I left them be until I had a few maps and a start of a story made. Then, once I had gotten my feet wet, I started making my own weapons and skills, and the rest followed from there.

I did a few maps and events on my first test game. Two of my friends hit the same problem where they walked about 5 spaces, got in a fight with some bats, the bats blinded them (through osmosis maybe) and they both ended up dead. So I'd say don't bother with tweaking until you're to the point where you're actually engaging enemies. But same with the game's dopey default chaser AI, you'll certainly want to tweak the defaults just to make it playable.

Osmosis, lol. Nice. Ok, I was kinda thinking maybe I should just work on leveling up my mapping and story skills for now, so I'll just do that for the time being.

Bats causing blind has been in countless RPGs and we took it for granted all this time. I can't claim the osmosis joke, as it was one of my friends who said it.

You will find that you definitely need to tweak the default stats.  They are merely placeholders and the further you go the more you will find that there is a mismatch - and that is just if you use the enemies, weapons and armour in the exact order that they appear in the data base, and it would be unlikely that that exactly matched your story.  I suspect that a game using nothing but default stats would reach the point of being unplayable.

For battles  here is a link to a very good introduction to the basics of how to do set up damage.  http://forums.rpgmak...d-like +rodents

Also have a look at http://forums.rpgmak...nts#entry138009 and this http://forums.rpgmak...ents#entry75376

Between them they will give a very good grounding.  Then use battle test in the data base for each and every enemy troop that you create.  As you go through the game allocating new gear, test it out against an existing troop to see what difference it makes to performance, then adjust it as you want.

To be honest these were the only things that I created in my first couple games!  It was always kind of the thing that intrigued me about RPGs when I was young.  So making a ton of my own custom spells, and enemies, and items, was all I did when I got the early RPG Makers.  As of late, I've been better about limiting my time with these and focusing on the actual scenario content.

Unfortunately, no I didn't. :)  I focussed on the story, the mapping, and my own scripting that I needed to make it all fit together how I wanted.  I had left the balancing and pretty much everything in the database untouched and then closed the game without actually getting around to doing any of it.  It now sits in a permanent state of limbo in case I ever decide to go back and delve into the database to finish it...

My first unfinished project was for RM2003. I changed everything except for that iconic "Stimulant". I don't know why, but I like "Stimulant".

I usually plan everything regarding the charcaters from the beginning of the project, so I never really use RM's default character's builds, weapon types, and skillsets. Even in an RMVX parody, I tend to build custom characters.

I think I left the default on for... Like 10 minutes... In my first project, before removing them all for balancing reasons.

Most of the default things have been recreated fitting my vision. :)

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
