After some thought and discussion, I'm looking at releasing my first game in chapters instead of trying to complete the whole thing at once. I'd still really like to provide a demo, although it would be presented with mostly RTP assets and a few simple combat/dialogue plugins.

Suggestions? Comments? ...Bueller?

Chapters is good for a few reasons--it keeps anticipation high for players, and it gives you time to concentrate on things one chapter at a time. Am sure there are flaws to this approach, but maybe someone else can describe them better.

Don't worry about using RTP--there's nothing wrong with that. Your demo is the roadmap, it's the tangible thing that people can see and proves your work. Keep it going!

@BadLittleSeed, your game looks very fun. Keep up with balance also yin and yang. Your maps look great. I suggest you should use other tileset too, a little mix up.

Thanks @Kupotepo , and I do plan on using different tilesets for the finished game - there's been quite a few that have caught my eye so it's hard to choose!:p

After a few days of frustration, I've been working hard on character/enemy balance, skills and experience/loot amounts for the starting area! I have a neat little intro (Well I think it's neat, lol) specifically for the demo, and I can't wait to share it.B):thumbsup-right:

Just a little update:
  • Finally finished my Story/World Dev tab! (Yes I know it took forever...):blush:
  • Finished balancing exp/loot rewards, actor and enemy damage/defense.
  • The starting area has a new name (Caprisa Isle) and updated map.
  • Completed a list of overall features for the game.
  • I've started drawing again!
  • Getting closer and closer to the first demo's release!

I liked it

The name is catchy, the backstory is nice and it looks like you have everything figured out, I'm just worried about the main character, the way you described made me feel like he wasn't much interesting, is this because we will be controlling his decisions? So the lack of personality from him is to fit the player's instead?

Anyway I'm looking forward to the demo!

I also really like the idea of chapters, not only to keep players' anticipation higher but also as motivation for you, the creator. Maybe things that the player does in the first chapter would influence the next one? Either way, looking forward to the demo!

@MagicPizzaGuy - Thank you for the compliments! There's a very good reason for Rhyn's personality, but I really don't want to spoil it. And yes, you will be controlling his decisions throughout the game. They will affect him as well as other characters.

@PeanutButterToast - You are absolutely right on both counts! And remember: Only the meek get pinched. The bold survive.

I liked a lot the improvement on the maps and also the bigger sprites for characters!

First of all, did you draw the bigger sprites yourself? They look a lot like the default sprite but taller, i liked it.

Second, the maps have improved a lot, youre using the doodads plugin, right? They are looking great, you even changed the colors of some trees to add variety.

Thanks @MagicPizzaGuy - for the sprites it's a quick and dirty method I found on youtube:

It's for Photoshop, I haven't found anything like this (yet) for GIMP. It makes the pixels from the neck down a bit blurry, so you have to go back in and touch them up. hiddenone and Candacis (and Avery, I think?) have tutorials for tallers sprites that take a lot more work and look much better. Finally, yes, doodads are great! (Although it's hard to resist the urge to use too many, and region restriction is necessary. :p )

the races sound epic, having a diverse but balanced set up like that is great for story-telling (i think, i haven't completed a game so i wouldn't know lmao) .
