I'm assuming we are talking about Europe's Middle Ages.
The Middle Ages is roughly between the 5th and 15th centuries, beginning with the collapse of the Roman Empire and ending around the Renaissance age. The use of gunpowder was very limited prior to the 15th century. Historically, no, the use of firearms would be inappropriate for a medieval setting. The earliest firearm I can think of is the Arquebus. It was a muzzle-loaded firearm used from the 15th to the 17th century. Here's the wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arquebus
Now, prior to that, you had the hand cannon. It would be appropriate for a medieval game. It was used up until the 15th century. Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_cannon
