Do parallax backgrounds have to be in PNG format, or can JPEG work?

I am converting files from VXAce to MV, I was wondering if those had to change too, and the Help file wasn't too specific.

JPGs are always a bad choice for use in gaming, because that format has no transparency.
And its only advantage over pngs, the smaller HDD storage size, doesn't help with the parallax RAM problem at all, because that problem is about uncompressed memory size, not about the storage size.
And in RAM there is no difference in the size between jpg and PNG.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
