Using the RTP is completely fine.

The problem with RTP is that the vast majority do not know how to use it effectively. The maps are boring (usually too big and not with a lot of detail). And devs don't make use of lighting and fogs, which can really make the difference for a map.

One of my favorite RM2K games was called Red Moon. It was a simple demo, not a complete game, but it used only the RTP and it was gorgeous, mainly because the game used fogs and lights and wise use of the RTP.

For me, I do not have a problem so long as the game is otherwise enticing. A good story and / or game mechanics can make up for RTP. Not that RTP is even bad - it's quite nice, just very common. I've even bought games that use it, such as the Last Dream.

in the r/rpgmaker discord i see alot of people saying "if an rpgmaker game uses rtp, it sux." do you guys think this too? just asking
As others have said, it's not the RTP that's bad or good, it's the developer. I've seen some great-looking RTP maps, just like I've seen some utterly abysmal maps made with (otherwise decent) custom graphics.

Having said that, the RTP by itself...is far from perfect or complete. If you want to make anything that stands out with it, you're going to have to get comfortable opening up those tilesets and making a few changes, even if they're nothing more than recolors.

I have to agree with all of that. In my case I ended up switching from using default enemy sprites in favor of the Librarium set, and ran the battleback files through a Gimp filter to create a sort of watercolor-meets-manga effect between the two. In some cases I also did the same with the default tilesets.

I use RTP as a basis for my custom work, so it doesn't really bother me. If I had change to throw for custom assets in different styles then I would, but for now, i'm a one man team and it works. at least I know how to art lol

Same here, so I was getting creative. Also, I would seriously consider removing the crowdfund link from your signature - I know I'm not on the mod squad and I'm not trying to micromanage on their behalf, but I can tell you from experience that posting those links are kind of against the rules around here. (It's also why it was auto-moderated, but we all know what it is.)

Everything except for the "Character Creator" Faces of VX Ace's RTP is fine.

Nah. Games with custom visuals will stand out to me more, but I don't have any problems with RTP games as a whole. Visuals are the hardest part of making games for me, so I get it

Please don't use the actual default actors in your game though

When I see games that are published on this forum RTP is the last important thing. Like others said story and usage of RTP are the most important.

Yes: If you just can't find a graphic you're looking for or can't make your own graphic for your story/project and as long you put effort into your project so it's alright to use provided asset . So basically if you did a great job on map making it seems pretty alright and nothing to shame on using RTP as your starting point just don't use sprite generator khkhkh

I dont like big-head style as well, but as you said: someone cant make their own tilesets and/ or find - if that's true then the same person might be not able to make their own characters..

I don't mind the squat, marshmallowy characters for maps, probably because of the NES/SNES nostalgia factor. The battlers though? Absolute no. Hard pass. The chibi style they went with for battlers is just too repulsive. It's the only RTP element I just cannot stand looking at in any game.

Not everyone can design / do pixelart, so using RTP is just fine.
It is about how polished / unpolished the games are.

I find the generator just cliche when using them as base for your actor or NPC

The DLC offers some decent, taller RTP assets. I especially like the Dark Fantasy assets...wish there were more of that.

See how much better "tall" Harold looks?

And these are the Dark Fantasy chars I was talking about:

Not only that, but the battlers look so much better when you give them even just a small height boost:

I mean come on, just look at that extra clothing detail!

Plus their heads are more proportional to their bodies lol. It's a shame the built-in generator doesn't generate the taller versions of the battlers and character sprites...

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
