I was wondering if when you finished a project, can you run the program by itself or do you need a different program with it? Im wondering cause I want to give the finished program to someone else on a different computer and idk if I can just copy the application and put it in a HDD for em or what?

You can't just copy it across like that, because they would need to have the full program, including the editor, to run it and your licence is for one user.

What you do is click on 'Game' on the menu bar, choose 'Compress'.  You then have another choice to make.

You can either compress it with or without RTP.  If you choose with RTP then everything the other person needs is included.  But it's a big file

If you choose without RTP then the other person has to download the RTP (free from this site) so that they have all the graphics, music etc. that they need.  The file you send is much smaller.

Having made your choice, compress it and it produces a file which looks like an large ice cube.  Give that to your friend.  They click on it, extract it and they have the game that they can play, but not edit.

If you copy it as is, then they would need to install the RTP.

Otherwise, you have to make it standalone :D

ksjp17, they don't want their friend to EDIT the game - just play it.

In the File menu, there's a Compress option that will create a self-installing exe. Do that and give them the exe that's created.

You can include the RTP when you compress. It'll result in a larger file, but they won't have to download the RTP in order to play. Or you can exclude the RTP which gives a smaller file, but they'll have to download and install the RTP in order to play. The upside of this is that they can then download other games that use the RTP but don't have it included, and will be able to play them as well.

@ Shaz, I know they just want to play it, which is why I explained about the compress.

Question about something, there's a place on the site to DL the RTP, and that's all fine, but what if people didn't strictly use the RTP to create their game(used custom resources or even the rosource pack addons this site/variou artists release) ?

Selecting Compress the game +the RTP resourses, includes all of them, including the ones you imported, correct?

@ksjp17 - If you copy paste the uncompressed files (the original project files), they will only need to open the game.exe and it will run... you don't need the editor...

Aside from those mentioned above:

If ur using only a few objects from the RTP, you could opt to import those files directly into the project, then remove the RTP= line from game.ini, then compress without RTP... this would result to a lower file size (than if you included the whole RTP), and they won't need the RTP to run it...

Yes, compress command includes all files inside the Graphics folder, so that includes all imports...

Also, you could do the method I mentioned to make it not include and also not require the RTP

It depends, too, on how you've imported them.

I do know SOME people (not many, thankfully) try to add the custom resources TO the RTP, so they're a "part of" the RTP and available for ALL games they make. This means they don't import the individual resources into the project.

In this case, if they exclude the RTP when they compress, the custom resources will not be available to players, because they will download the RTP from the main site, which does not include the extra content.

If you use the Import facility for the extra resources (or paste them into the appropriate folder of the project), then whether you include the RTP or not when you compress, these will still be included, because they are not part of the RTP. So the player might still have to download the RTP, but the extra resources will be there in the project.

Oh ok, so custom resources(if imported corrected) automatically get compressed with the game then, sweet(although unless you are "only" using custom resources, you're still gonna have to toss in the RTP as well I guess.

Then again, with the awesome DS resource pack, the Fantasy Hero resource pack, and ect, I predict in the near future, if these are the type of epic resource packs we get, I doubt many people will be needing to dl the RTP(a few more packs like that, and we'll have so much better choices then the RTP resources) :)

You only have to "toss in" the RTP as well if you are using anything from the RTP, you don't want your players to have to download it separately, and you don't mind giving them a larger file to download.

Keep in mind RTP includes the windowskin, the default sounds, everything listed on the System tab. So if you DON'T include the RTP and don't want players to download it, you'd better have changed those things to something you ARE including.

@Zoltor - if you do the method I told about, you can skip importing any RTP resource that is not needed... :)

Yea ofcourse, that's why I was saying, pretty soon noone is gonna need to include the RTP due to all the awesome resource packs we have to use.

lol I didn't even think of the Window skin, forgot about that(those are on the rarer side of resources, and It's not something easily made either, so yea that could be a problem).

To Engr Shana: Yea I know

Then please enlighten me on how do do so(do you need to attach a code to them or what's the format) ?

I never understood how people made skins for MMO windows either(and its hardly published information, which doesn't help matters any).

Kind of getting off topic here. You can view the help file (F1 in the editor) to see how windowskins are set up. Also export the RTP windowskin and take a look at it in the editor. Then if you need more help, post in Resource Requests, showing what you've done and what you need help with.

let's stick to the topic :)

Yea sorry.

Yea I did that, I find it especially weird how It's like half the size of most of the other graphic based resources(only 128x128 pixels, lol my Avatar is even almost twice that size)

Yea back to topic, if we keep getting awesome resource packs like we have been, were gonna save a lot of file space, because people are no longer gonna be using the RTP resources in their games.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
