So my room mate recently said to me that he was "done with games".
This is so strange to me - it's almost like saying "I'm done watching movies" or "I'm done reading books".

I guess you could chalk this up to games being the "black sheep" of the entertainment industry, but the concept of "being done with them" is just so crazy to me.
I've often found that games can provide an experience much more enriching that a book or movie, and it blows my mind that someone would just stop playing them.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Where do you think gaming fits in today's entertainment world? Would you ever "be done with games"?

I dunno about "done" but I've found that as I get older I've been less interested in the games that are coming out these days. Maybe it is because I've been a gamer since I was 6, and I'm now 37, so I feel like I've seen it all almost. Plus, other obligations mean I can't spend 60+ hours on one game anymore (unless I want that game to take 4 - 6 weeks to beat).

I noticed that I'm also kinda done with games, since I started developing myself.

Now all I do is occasionally play some Rocket League and then continue working on my own games.

I'm sort of done myself. I come across something occasionally that peaks my interest but for the most part I don't care for the streamlined direction that most franchises have been slowly devoting themselves to. Not to say that streamining complexity out of games to appeal to the largest demographic possible is wrong from a business perspective, but those types of games have never appealed to me yet they continue to take over more and more of the professional marketplace.

I'm fairly content to allow my current consoles to age without any of the impulses to upgrade them that I used to suffer from when I was younger/more games interested me. I've got enough old favorites to keep me occupied and will keep buying indie computer games from time to time since they are cheap, don't normally require special rigs and still keep my interest but as games are now once my current console and computer become obsolete I'm planning to be done with new games from a AAA perspective and will stick to rm games if I buy any new releases at all.

I'm in to games myself.... I see nothing wrong myself with taking 4-6 weeks to beat a game.   All the more fun, IMO! :D   (An hour a week, perhaps.)

Well, it's no surprise that I have don't play games as much as I would three years ago since in that time I've gotten other hobbies, entered collage, and got a job, but the idea of abandoning a lifelong hobby seems alien to me.

I guess that's the question though, how much of a gamer was your friend previously? In his childhood was he the type of guy to own several game consoles, or did he just own one console he sometimes play casually. Did he game that much to begin with? If gaming wasn't a huge priority of his to begin with, then it's not so surprising.

Actually, I'm done watching movies.
Outside of some studios I follow, the same goes for me as well. Come to think of it, the only non-animated movie I've seen this year is Civil War.

I get where he's coming from. These days I enjoy making my game way more than I enjoy playing games. Every now and then a game comes out where I'm like DAMN! I wanna play that. But it's really rare. I wouldn't say I'm done with games. But it takes a really good game to impress me.

I recently turned 29 and I still play videogames, but I seem to be getting more and more interested in developing rather than playing them, and whenever I play them, they usually are viewed by me mostly as ideas\inspiration for making my own stuff.

I guess being a gamer for 20+ years made me more picky (I saw a lot of stuff), also like some people mentioned here, when you get older you have more responsibilities and not enough time to play. :p

Your room mate is being quite extreme. I mean why the hell quit them forever? Just stop for a while and play some casually for a couple of minutes, I mean lol, why the serious drama of it? It's just entertainment.

I'm 32 and I have been done with movies for so almost half of my life. Too much of the same. I like some B-movies that are super cheap, but I can't invest 90+ minutes sitting on my ass passively watching something when I could be creating or playing.

I am 99% done with AAA games, as well. I play a few indies I pick up but for the most part, my time goes to game dev and family obligations. I wish I knew more people who played MTG IRL, but such is life.

Something I've been noticing the past few years is that I don't find myself playing/watching much games/anime like I used to. I mean, I used to spent most of my time on it and it's what led me here but now it's different for whatever reason :3 Same as above, I enjoy more creating or imagining now. That doesn't mean I won't play a good title from time to time, but it's like once or twice in a year or so... :E

Yeah I think this is a lot of people .. We basically discover that playing most games .. especially AAA is basically unsatisfying. It's not as if retreading old ground is bad. A lot of the things I like these days are stuff like old school rpg's and visual novels because they DON'T try and reinvent the wheel or wow me with graphics. If I'm into the story I'll get into them. But 90% of AAA games I find have throwaway stories designed to be a support for some overly convoluted combat system or set of cinematic cut-scenes that are supposed to take the place of good writing and likeable characters.

I think the only game I really played seriously this year was XCOM2 .. I'm a sucker for XCOM games in general. I also played a few rpgmaker games and VN's .. but I never really hit it off with any of them enough to finish them yet.

Whenever I play a video game I feel guilty because I'm not doing anything productive. However, your roommate is just going to come back. He's going to get a craving one day, and that's it. You're going to catch him in the act of playing a video game. No escaping that XD

I don't think I'll ever be finished with video games.  I'll probably be playing them until I'm old, gray, and can no longer see the TV... although maybe by then they'll have games you can play with your mind!

I dunno about "done" but I've found that as I get older I've been less interested in the games that are coming out these days. I look at it as a nice $70 investment if a game can last me a whole month.

The thing with games is that it's such a broad medium now that it's all but impossible to write them off entirely.

You can be done with triple-A games, sure, or overhyped indie darlings, or mobile shovelware, or whatever... but "done with games" just means you haven't looked hard enough for something that fits in nicely with your life and interests at this stage.

There's something for literally everyone out there. Unfortunately not all of it gets as much attention as those titles with big marketing budgets and/or friends in the press!

Not saying its impossible for someone to give up games entirely but they are certainly something easy to fall back into given how wide spread the medium is. Taken in more of a broad sense than rather a direct literal sense I'd say I'm more "done with games" than I used to be.

In my teens the rpg junkie in me had to go around and pick up every obscure rpg I could get my hands on; I'd used to go to a gamestop and spend a lot of time thumbing through the dozens of cheap ps2/gamecube games that had no case just to find a rpg I hadn't heard of yet to try. I used to never want to sell/trade-in games either but that changed when money become more of an issue and I wanted a new release game or just a new one to try.

Eventually money would become more of a barrier of entry to games than it was when I was younger, I got an xbox 360 at one point because I had gotten a specific model/package they were moving away from selling so I got it at a fairly low price. I've gotten a lot of use of it and still have it to this day with not having had issues with it but there was still loads of PS3 games, many jrpgs I had yet to even try because of the amount of money I would have had to spend to play them. Then there is the wii games I missed out on after my wii broke and the newer consoles, handhelds, etc...

Then there is the time investment, being older you have more obligations and responsibilities that are ultimately more important; college, work, trying to set-up a life for yourself through finding a home or dating and eventually starting a family of your own.

I think also having played games for a significant period of time now I've started growing tired of some things and have certain expectations now. For example, I like pokemon as it is a fun game and hidden within has some serious rpg mechanics to explore when viewed at a competitive level but I've grown tired with the mostly same formula for every game. Tired of the samey evil villain team that usually has a half-baked reason for why they want to destroy or takeover the world, tired of being forced into the same plotline of stopping this team and tired of doing the same thing in every game; beat poke leaders, stop evil team, beat elite leaders. Then there is trying to keep up with transferring all your pokemon over between games, etc...Basically now I would want a pokemon game that gives me more freedom to explore the world and story and has ease of use and inexpensive ways to transfer over and collect pokemon.

Admittedly, I've even started struggling with my passion for developing rpg maker games now but that's something I'm trying to re-capture. Anyway, to end this little story, I still enjoy playing games but don't have as much time, money and same level of interest as before. I find myself more drawn to easily dropped and free cell phone games, free rpg maker games, good deals on steam games/bundles or inexpensive old used games for my xbox 360. If I can find a good deal on something that will occupy my time like skyrim, that's definitely something that captures my attention still as opposed to new $60 games that have like 10hrs of gameplay and if someday funds are less of an issue I still have interest in checking out new big name games I haven't yet but much more reasonably so than before.

So yeah, your room-mate may have moved on from how he enjoyed games before or maybe he really is done for good. I'd say chances are possible some little cellphone game or pc game, etc.. may cause him to give it a go again down the road though. Sorry if this got so lengthy lol.

The only thing I have sworn of (for now) is online gaming. For about a year the process have been:

1 Start new game

2 Play until I reach a competitive level

3 Competitive community is poison

4 Find new game to play

I don´t need that part of my life anymore.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? No-one c
