Doom and Doom II metalized Music Tracks in .ogg format for use with RPG Maker VX Ace (that's the one I used to test this, might work on the rest if they support .ogg formats)

This is a compilation with rock/metal remixes of doom's original songs composed by many community artists.

This music pack aims to create a Metal experience. Every original midi song of the game has been replaced by remakes using real instruments.

just download, and drop it in your DLC or resources folder, and import it.

or...

get the steam workshop version, and just import it.

I was told that, "the doom engine was last under a non-commercial license, so I'd assume the music is under a similar or more restrictive license in this case."

If you can locate the original license and such, please include it in your post, it'd be really helpful to avoid legal issues.

The doom engine is open source at this time since 2006.

I didn't use the doom engine to make this.

this is a cover with actual instruments, not midi synth like the originals

so its creative commons.

I included it....

Everything we've found says that id Software retained copyright of the resources. But even if it's a remix, you're using the same melody, no?

It was also discussed in this thread.

Here you go - the license from Registered Doom v1.1 . . .LIMITED USE SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENTThis Limited Use Software License Agreement (the "Agreement") is a legal agreement between you, the end-user, and Id Software, Inc. nope,

there none of the midi in these songs.

these are just covers.

if covers were illegal, then why are their cover bands?

and no, id software released the source code

Wikipedia also states this

"Interest in Doom was renewed in 1997, when the source code for the Doom engine was released (it was also placed under the GNU General Public License in 1999)"

right here says john carmack (the KEY developer of doom, who created the engine for the game) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_D._Carmack#Free_software is a advocate for open source software. GNU Public License means OpenSource....

and I didn't use the game to create these files...

if anything I ripped with a program called Slade3 these from a free heavy metal music cover mod that included these all as replacements of the doom soundtrack.

yeah they say software, meaning Pirating the game, or making copies of the game.

I didn't rip the doom midi tracks and insert them into the download up there.

basically that license means you cant upload the game and allow people to pirate it.

even the original midi tracks for doom are available for free online, their composer Bobby prince put them on his website for free.

Actually! Cover bands are technically illegal unless they have license from the publishers of the said music/tracks to be able to perform them/make albums with them in cafes/pubs/etc. The same thing applies to making fangames too.

The music industry is a lot more complicated than one would think <:3c

If music covers are created from a midi, whether the midi is included or not, it's still making something from ID's software. Unless you're saying you composed them from scratch?

lol! Cover bands pay huge royalties to the original artists if it's not already in the public domain :D

Source code is not the same as resources.

And just edit your post and add extra info, as double posting is against the forum rules (which you can access via a link in the lower right corner of every forum page).

I did not use the midi tracks to create these tracks

I didn't put the midi file into a program and create a modernized version.

if covers of doom tracks were illegal, then how come youtube; the most NAZI like entity when it comes to copyright claims, hasn't downed a single cover of DOOM.

heck doom and game playthroughs are still up on youtube,

mods are legal (even when they aren't total conversion mods; meaning they used the stock doom stuff to create the mod.

the game was created to be modable from the get go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_WAD#Extensibility_in_Doom "John Carmack, lead programmer at id Software, designed the Doom internals from the ground up to allow players to extend the game. For that reason, game data such as levels, graphics, sound effects and music are stored separately from the game engine, in "WAD files". This allowed players to make their own data without any modification to the engine", and people were able to use software created by john romero (another Developer who created DOOM) called DoomEd to create levels with their resources or modders created resources.

I literally have no clue why you guys are being so anal about this issue.

ive provided more than enough evidence that im not violating any copyright laws.

do the tracks I provided sound like this?

if so, arrest me now officer

but they don't, they sound like the ones from this video

which uses a METAL COVER MOD. (8 seconds in)

now can you stop picking on me,

Valve says its not a copyright violation,

the game is under GNU open source anyway

I didn't use any of the original files created by id software or bobby prince

and any mods I ripped from were public domain. (as all WAD files are resource packs, and we modders of doom know that, and don't care if people use our stuff)

We're not being mad about the issue, we're asking about where you got the license because:

a.) This is an official site, owned by an official company, so we have to be stricter with possibly copyrighted content especially if it's going to be used with the program.

b.) Resources are still part of the software ID, not just the engine or source code, much like RPG Maker.

c.) You need to chill. I'm helping you out here not to get banned instantly since it's a bannable offense, even if it was an accident. You are reported, and I'm asking for confirmation in regards to the assets.

d.) After talking to a friend and reviewing the license, you did something wrong. You cannot protect your work under CC. You can only claim it under GNU/GPL. "The GPL is a copyleft license, which means that derived works can only be distributed under the same license terms." So please fix that :p

e.) Another thing that YOU NEED TO CLARIFY. Did you compose them 100% without the help of the midi?

f.) It is well within MY power to take them down until you can confirm they are allowed and convince the staff that's not just me.

g.) Another thing you need to clarify here:

This is the original screencap and what has been reported. I want to draw your attention to the words "when ripped from their Wad/flac format" ergo yours are NOT 100% original and can lead to a lot of confusion.

I hope you're seeing where we are going with this.

ok whatever

its GNU, open source, public domain

my bad, I used the wrong word (>.>)

but I didn't RIP these from ID SOFTWARES OFFICIAL DOOM FILES.

these songs in their cover format are NOT ripped from id's resources. (as I proved with the 2 youtube videos)

and don't tell me to chill, I feel like you are intentionally trying to give me a hard time.

ive given you more than enough patience, and more than enough proof. I got these ogg files from a FREE doom mod over at Moddb which every resource there is considered public domain unless the modder specifies that he doesn't want people using his resources he packed into a wad for his mod.

just listen to the original e1m1 track, and listen to the e1m1 cover.

one was created by id software and has midi synth, the other was created by modders with actual instruments.

and this is the second time ive said this, I DIDNT USE A MIDI TO MAKE THESE FILES

I did not use the midi tracks to create these tracks

I didn't put the midi file into a program and create a modernized version.
my bad for not including that they were covers and including some long winded speil about how this mod is under public domain.

I fixed the thing on steam over 20 minutes ago....

This is the FIRST time that you said that this was taken from a mod. DID you get the permission of the original creator to work with it and submit it as yours? Why wasn't this mentioned in your topic or workshop post?

And no I'm not giving you a hard time, you're overthinking it. I'm just doing my job and have no reason to have anything against you. Think clearly for a sec and drink some water. I have to go for a bit and do something, another moderator from Steam or from this site might post here.

the description of the mod

"This is a compilation with rock/metal remixes of doom's original songs composed by many community artists (See the credits for info about the authors). This goes great with Brutal Doom and enhance it's violent atmosphere even more. This music pack aims to create a Metal experience. Every original midi song of the game has been replaced by remakes using real instruments. Now on volume 4 all missing songs from volume 3 are added"

http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads/doom-metal-soundtrack-mod-volume-4

community artists means they made them for the sole purpose of being modders resource and public domain

THAT'S all we needed to know. THANK YOU. Now please add that in your workshop post for whichever inspiration they might've done and properly link back to such things so we won't have any trouble. I'll trust your word about Public domain. But if one of the staffers found discrepancies then please do understand that we're doing this for the community's safety as well.

It is very, very common for people to use commercial resources as if they are public domain and then add their own license to the result based entirely on how they want people to use their work and not worrying at all what the original copyright holder's wishes are. Just because the mod exists does not mean that it is a legal mod.

Let me put this another way. id Software owns the copyright to the composition not just the arrangment.  So if you use the same composition and arrange it in a different way, unless you have permission to modify the music from id Software you are in violation of that copyright.

I didn't modify nor use their midi files to make this resource pack,

nor did the modders when they used real guitars

none of the songs have any bit of midi synth in them.

even if these did copy any resource from doom to create them, john carmack made it opensource and under a GNU license for the game and the wad files, the developers at id (or atleast most of them started as game modders) john carmack is a big supporter of public domain, GLU and opensource.

any existing legal mumbo jumbo comes from publishing firms re releasing the product in an altered form to run on modern machines, and thus running on their software. and the only ones who have done that are activision, for porting it to the xbox 360, or the doom 3 BFG edition which came with doom 1 and 2 for free.

the songs have been given away to the public (the original midi files) by bobby prince, and on his blog, http://bobbyprincemusic.blogspot.com/2013/12/dosbox-vst.html

he obviously doesn't care if people take his musix and mux/VST his midi files, as he is praising it and glorying someone taking his music and playing it on virtual instruments with his midi he created for doom.

so even if I did use the midi to create these, im not violating any copyright law, and the creators don't really care, and actually support people who use their resources to create new things. heck even 2 groups of doom modders (who created TNT and Plutonia, which used the vanilla resources that came with doom and doom II, without their permission, since it wasn't needed to begin with, as the file format for DOOM and DOOM II was created to be easily moddable and accessible to modders, and id software even made a few utilities to make doom mods and wads) were given jobs at ID software, and their work was sold as FINAL DOOM on PC.

also there are a few threads on this site where people ripped the textures, sprites and resources from doom to create Doom in its entirety in RPG Maker XP.

http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/6873-doom-at-the-gates-of-hell-a-fangame-made-in-rpgmaker-xp-and-fple/

so I feel singled out here, sorry.

Aha!  Bobby Prince is the original composer, that is exactly the information I was looking for!  All the other information you've been posting has been a bit like sorting through a game of telephone.  Well, if he's cool with it then it won't be a problem.  Thank you.

The reason why we crack down harder on copyright in this section of the forums is because you're offering things for others to use.  If someone decided to violate copyright on their own game that will be on their heads unless we host the project here.  If someone uses an illegal resource they got from here that's on their heads and ours for not staying on top of it.
