Ever since I play Legend of the Super Saiyan on Super Nintendo I've wanted to see a really great, and complete RPG based on the franchise. RPG Maker seemed the solution and back in the day there was a ton of resources based on the property. None of those old resources are compatible with the newer software, though.
Nowadays there isn't even a fraction of what there used to be, and what is there doesn't come with battler animations. So my question is, would it be worth it to even try to make a DBZ RPG with the current system?
I played Attack of the Saiyans, a fantastic one-off RPG, and couldn't help but think how great it could've been if there was a series that covered more of the franchise. RMMV seems to be capable of replicating this style based on some videos I've seen (which I'm sure would be a lot of work, but the payoff to a fan would be worth the effort and I'm sure it would be popular). However going by what I've been able to find there aren't enough resources out there now for a DB(Z) game like this.
Now I know using Rips form games like Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure and Dragon Ball Z Attack of the Saiyans would be bad, and I understand why (copyrighted material and all), even though those sprites would be perfect for all things Dragon Ball and beginning of Z. Hell, my idea was to go ahead and do it anyway, since I was planning to buy the albums (Bruce Falconer's score is available for purchase, instawin) and settle for just not distributing it, at all. Because, hey, if nobody wants to make a good DBZ game then why shouldn't I use their resources to do it myself, even if I have to keep it to myself.
I guess the only options I have if I want to distribute (which I do, making the game just to play it by myself seems like a waste) is to either partner up with someone or a group of someones who can make the sprites and animations for me or to try myself which given my limited artistic abilities, and the fact that it would undoubtedly be a considerable long-term investment, if I want the hardware to properly 'draw' sprites with. I'd love to make a series that covers it all from Grandpa Gohan living with young Goku to the battle with Buu and beyond, but all the sprites for all the character and all the enemies have to be done. That is a daunting task.
Is it biting off more than I can chew? I don't have experience with this new system or the community that supports it.
