SYNOPSIS / STORY

Here is a short demo (1 - 2 hours, if you know where to go) of my little fantasy-rpg-project, which began as a written story over 20 years ago during a long hospital stay. Since I never finished the story and was looking for a story for an RPGMaker game, I "dug it up" again. This is my first project with the new RPGMaker MZ and is very "basic". A little based on old JRPGs you have to travel the world, explore dungeons, complete tasks, fight battles, improve equipment, win the trust of your fellow companions, etc.

The game is at a very early stage and still contains many placeholders. For example, while most dialogues give a general impression, character development and relationships still need to be (re) written. They also contain spelling and grammatical errors that need to be corrected as my main language is not English. Some graphics need to be replaced and there is no background music yet.

The following text comes straight from the beginning of the game and briefly outlines the story:

5000 years ago, three races lived on the southern continent - humans, elves and dwarves ... While elves and dwarves lived side by side in peace, they lived in constant quarrels with the humans. And then the number of humans grew steadily ... Soon there were so many that they drove the other races to the northern continent. Thereafter, for many centuries, there was again a peaceful time between humans and the other two races. But there was another race. The dragons - Mystical, giant creatures that were able to transform into human form. But there were no male dragons. So even though they could live hundreds of years, they had to kidnap men again and again in order to reproduce. But as the number of humans continued to grow, they also developed new weapons and ways to hunt and kill dragons. At the beginning the dragons ruled the skies of the entire continent. But eventually there were only a few of them left. Soon the only place of refuge for them where the Sun-Mountains. But they still needed men to keep from dying out. So some dragons began to wander the lands in their human form in search of suitable mates. Over the next few centuries, dragons were drawn to the human kingdom again and again. Some came back and gave birth to their children. While the girls lived their lives as dragons, the boys grew into men and founded the first small settlements in the Sun-Mountains. Many more centuries passed, and humans and dragons lived in harmony with one another. They had children and the villages flourished. And they lived happily ever after ...

THE END!

But unfortunately, the story did not end like that. After centuries of peace, THEY came ... The Demons ... Countless hordes ...Five years after their first appearance, they had already taken over the entire northern continent. Fifteen years later, they also owned the southern continent and most of the population was dead or enslaved. In the end, only the dragons remained to face the hordes of demons. For weeks, the seemingly endless hordes stormed the dragons. One dragon after another fell and the villages burned down. Soon the last dragon was defeated. But in the farthest part of the Sun Mountains, in the deepest cave, a new hope was born. And this is exactly where your very own story has started.

This was the brief introduction to the game.

After our MC (and 19 female fighters) trained hard for many years, he fights for many decades against the leaders of the demons up to their overlord. Together with the last survivor of his friends, he defeats the overlord, but both heroes are "destroyed" in the process. Our hero wakes up without memory in a cave in the sun mountains while the soul of his last companion was torn apart, spread over the world and fused with the souls of human beings.

It is now his goal to find the carriers of these souls and with them to free the world from the rest of the demons ...

Suggestions welcome

Because the game is still in a very early stage and certainly contains many things that could be done better (I´m nothing more than an beginner at RPGMaker and want to improve), all suggestions are very welcome.

Edit:

Some small Questions

1. Do I have to use Encryption for deployment, while using paid plugins? I used encryption this time, because I was not sure.
2. How often does it make sense to post updates? Already with minor changes or only with major changes?
3. surely more to come ...

1.) I believe encryption is for making your files unreadable to people. If you don't want your assets stolen, I would recommend using it. However, I don't really know how it works. Look into it just in case. You're using MZ right? I have no idea how it's different in that engine compared to MV. I don't actually know if plugins (paid or otherwise) are encrypted as well, though if they are I don't know how this would effect them.

2.) The rules said something about how long you should wait for updates: https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/games-in-development-rules-and-guidelines.23243/

It's at the bottom in "Things to Note".
----

I hope this answers your questions. I have one of my own actually. I don't have MZ yet, so do I need to get it to play your game? I'm assuming you have an independent file, but can you let me know just in case? Thanks!

@CEO1234 Thanks for your answer.
1. Yes, I´m using MZ. I dont think it encrypts plugins, but it does with sound effects and graphics. So maybe I dont need to envrypt it in the future.

2. yes, I know about the 72 hours for updates. But that is rather irrelevant to me. I wouldn't be fast enough for 72 hours between updates XD. I would more be interested in how others handle updates. Smaller updates with little content (e.g. 3 new NPCs who have something to say) or rather larger updates (e.g. a completely new questline).

---

The download should contain everything you need to play (hopefully). As far as I can remember, in earlier versions there was the option of inserting or excluding rtp. MZ doesn't have the option and everything should be included.

Well, I don't think you'll need to worry about having to update your game every 3 days. I'm sure you can still take your time for the bigger updates. As for how you handle updating your projects, it depends on what type of game you're making. Yours seems to be more like a traditional RPG, so there's going to be mechanics that go along with this design that one would expect. Like battles, maybe some puzzles, a story, etc... For your game, you could rely on updating these things and maybe you could only post the new version of the game after you're happy with the changes made (like you could add new locations for example).

Now, obviously you don't have to have multiple demos (unless there's something that desperately needs to be fixed or altered). Different demo versions are more for bigger updates. You could simply just keep us posted on the new details of your project if the changes are small. You could add new screenshots, for example.

If you're interested in how I would handle it, I think for my project I would rely more on how many new locations I have as my game is about exploring dreams. It's very reliant on how much the player can explore, so updates would revolve around that. Even still, you should be cautious about spoilers, as it is easy to spoil things for the player this way. Handle this by being discreet about what you're showing off, even if it's going to be in your demo anyway. After all, it's more fun when the player discovers things for themselves. If you want to show extra things off anyway, then that's fine, just warn us first of course.

@CEO1234 Thank you again. That was really detailed and insightful.

Link updated.

I updated the link because I changed the resolution from 5: 4 to 16: 9. This then brought about further changes. Since there are only minor changes (mainly bugs) this is the only update here for the time being until I have finished the next quest series and it is worth an update at all. For such smaller things I have created a general thread in which I mainly want to post my questions (there is so much to learn from rpgmaker mz): https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/complementary-thread- for-my-project-in-development. 128309 /
