Hello fellow internet-goers. My name is Matthew, and I've been working on a small side project that's begun to blow up in my mind. It was originally planned to be a chance to test out some ideas for scripts and my plans for a new class system, but it's begun to grow to more than that. I've begun to become nearly as excited and interested about this project as I am the huge one I have planned after this one would have tested things out for it. But now with my wanting to grow this project, I no longer have the skills needed to really put everything together myself. There's a lot of mapping and eventing in this project, but it's mostly just basic mapping the dungeon floors and eventing encounters. Though that's still not my best forte in addition to just how much there is to do for all of it, so an extra hand or two for this would be greatly appreciated. The main thing I really need help with is with scripting. I have basic abilities with scripting, but if I really want to bring this class system especially to light, I need some help. It's inspired mainly by games like Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim and Dragon Quest VII and IX. The player would select a basic class for each of the four characters and then would get to select stat proficiencies and skillset proficiencies to gain boosts in. They could also gain access to a skillset they wouldn't normally have with their base class in exchange for a skillset proficiency. As the player levels up, they gain skill points that they can put into skillsets to gain passive bonuses and new skills depending on the skillset (which would be things like different weapons and magic types plus a unique skillset for each base class). It gives players a chance to further customize their characters to be how they want them to be whether for enjoyment of customization or for optimization to get further through the dungeon. I want to use this system again later in a huge open-world game I've been planning, but that won't start creation or much further planning for a good while.
Currently, the game title is "Endless Dungeon", but this is really just meant as a placeholder until I have a much better name. But that's just the working/placeholder title for now. This game is very combat-oriented and doesn't have much of any plot, but I do want to have characters pop up with random little snippets of speech to develop some personality for each of them. Even though there's not much story of emphasis on character development, it would kill me inside as a writer to just have the characters be COMPLETELY blank, but they're still going to be general enough for the player to imagine themselves or their friends in the shoes of each of these characters. It would just kind of be like Fire Emblem's critical hit quotes, where the character pops up and has a short dialogue that reflects who they are. But yeah, I've listed below what kinds of people I need and what you would be doing if you applied. If you're interested in helping or just want some more information on the plans for this project, just send me a PM! Thanks =D
Scriptors (1-2+) - I basically explained above the biggest scripting thing that would need to be done, which is the class system. But in addition to that, I would love to have a few other smaller things. I have a few small things like a quest log and side view battlers, but I'm not the best at working with them or other scripts. The inclusion of more scripts might take place as the game processes through development, but we'll just have to see where it goes to know what all would be good to have. But there would at least be a battle appearance and menu overhaul at the very least in addition to a few smaller things.
Eventors (1+) - Most of the eventing would be pretty basic stuff, making characters pop up and say things during various triggered events like a critical hit or leveling up. Though with the sheer size of the dungeon, there could potentially be a lot of this basic eventing to do throughout the game itself. Aside from this, there would also be some more advanced eventing to make sure the scripts are working, to set up spells, skills, stats, items, and all that, and to potentially make the enemies wander throughout floors rather than having random encounters. I would help with some of the basic eventing, but I'm not great at all of the advanced eventing with the scripts and there's a lot more basic eventing that I can do all by myself.
Mappers (1+) - I'm okay at mapping, but I'm far from being exceptionally good. Not to mention there's a lot of floors that would need to be created. I would help to map the dungeon floors of course, but I definitely need an extra hand or two to help the process not take like 20 years and to help improve the overall quality of the maps' appearances over what little I can do.
Composer (1+) - I would really like to have custom FX and music for this game. The music would be multiple battle tracks, tracks for traversing the dungeon floors, safe zones, and the 2 or 3 cutscenes that would take place, a theme for the title screen and one for the starting screen where the classes are selected, and potentially a theme that plays when the player opens their main menu in game. This would be a bit larger task I would assume, as I would like multiple tracks for battles and traversal so that the player is stuck with the same couple tracks for the entire dungeon (which would probably be like 500-1000 floors depending on time and willingness to continue by both me and the team itself XD).
Artist/Sprite Artist (1+) - I can't do sprites or battlers, which is what I would need. Someone is already do the artwork for the main protagonists, but I would love some additional images to set the atmosphere as the player hits key points in the dungeon or to potentially even create a short basic animation for anyone who happens to reach the final boss. (On like floor 1000 or something XD). I would also love to have some custom spritework for characters, monsters, tilesets, and/or icons for items, equipment, spells, and skill. I can find animations for skills online, but if anyone would be interested in helping create custom skill and spell animations, I'd be happy to have you on board as well.
This is a non-commercial project as of now, but if you will only help with this in return for money, don't leave. If we can get a demo together with the very basics of the class system and maybe the first 10 or so floors (basically just like until the first boss), I can attempt to gain funding from crowd sourcing, but of course that doesn't guarantee money is a certainty. It just means that, if that succeeds, the game would become commercial and you would be able to make some money off of this. But even if this game isn't successful in being commercialized, the next game that will use the systems created with this one will be. It would be a much larger project with a chance for much larger-scale returns if you decide to help with this project and then stick around for that one. But that's up to you, and I do hope you will consider helping with this project either way. And whether it's commercial or not, I'd be more than happy to lend my writing skills out to anyone that is willing to help. I've written a novela that I'm expanding into a full novel to be later published, am currently writing a short film, have tons of ideas I have yet to put to paper, and also DM for Dungeons and Dragons sometimes, so I have A LOT of storytelling experience and knowledge. Thanks for your consideration!
