SETTING: A heavily forested mountain (think of a national park). It is Summer, and it has been raining abundantly for the past week or so, making the climbing very treacherous.

OBJECTIVE: The player needs to make it to the summit with the help of 7 gnomes that inhabit said mountain.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR: I want to make it so each one of those gnome is tied to a puzzle or event that the player needs to complete in order to succeed. For example, one of them could help the player cross over some perilous rapids.

I need suggestions of fun situations to implement in this context.

Any ideas?

This is not a 'mechanic' as such, and 'Games Mechanics Design' is not for discussing individual specific projects, but looking at systems of gameplay at a more conceptual level.

'Ideas and Prototypes' is the forum that looks at individual projects in an early stage of development and has a thread 'Ideas that do not deserve their own thread.' You might post there. Alternatively, you could look through the tutorials section for puzzles. As most of these are evented and events didn't change, I suggest you look through the VX Ace tutorials where there are quite a number. Or you could read the many threads discussing sidequests for ideas. The thing is, no one else can really do this for you, because you need some coherence in your choice. They have to fit your world, your characters, your general approach to gameplay. To take a ridiculous example to illustrate what I mean - there would be no point in suggesting "rescue my son from the dragon" if there are no dragons in your world.

Got distracted... again. So now I'm on project.... 5? 6? I can't even remember off the top of my head how many plugins I have in the works. Though I blame the latest two on a coding youtuber I watch occasionally. He codes in C++ but walks through the process well enough that it inspires me to do similar things for JS plugins. So... blame him for my lack of activity. lol
It's my birthday today! Mom and I went to my favorite Japanese restaurant for lunch and they gave me a Japanese dessert as a birthday surprise. Their salad is SO GOOD. Now we're back home chilling!
Game Theory is great to practice and all... but it is zero substitute for playtesting a game and saying, "Am I having fun?".
