How can I edit the Game.exe files that come with RPG Maker XP and VX?

you don't - that is forbidden by the EULA.

The only exeption would be changing the icon, and for that you need a special program.

What do you want to edit there anyway? the game engine is in the scripts, game data in the archive files - the exe only contains the interpreter and some basics, but not the game itself...

And if you're talking about the sample games you can download - if they include a project file, you can open that in the editor as with any of your own projects.

If they are encrypted or don't have a project file, then you can't open them.

It's because I can't open the game normally, so I want to open it in the editor so I can use playtest on it.

Why can't you open it? Give us the error messages and we can help.
Usually you download the archive-program, doubleclick it to install it, and then doubleclick the game.exe to play it.

If there are any error messages or problems with that, then either your download was damaged or you windows has restricted your execution access rights on the file, or a background program is blocking that exe - all three are local errors on your computer and you need to fix that problem at your computer to play the game.

Please link to the sample game you're trying to play, and screenshots of the error message as well as the folder where you installed the game.

There are no "sample" games with XP, are there? What game are you trying to open? If it's one you've downloaded, if the project files are not there, it's because the developer does not want you to have them. The community does not look favourably upon people who hack into games when the developer clearly does not want you to.

Besides, the project files are not in Game.exe anyway.

There is the one that came with the editor, and also the VX sample game that also came with the editor. I remember a year ago, I couldn't open it on my old computer, so I spent the whole day trying to find a way to open it and I found a way to open it in the editor where I used playtest on it. I can't remember how I did it though. So can you please help me find a way to open it?

You've ignored Andar's post completely. Can't help you unless you answer the questions asked ;)

Thing is, it doesn't display an error message. I double click it, it says it's loading for about half a second, and then just stops. And the game doesn't even open. Even if I say run as administrator, it won't work no matter what I do.

which file do you click?

The behaviour you describe is something that would happen if you try to open the encrypted data of a game instead of the game's exe or the game's project file.

Also, instead of double-clicking, open the editor first and then try to use the editor's open command...

There are no sample games with the editor - not from Degica, I fon't know if there were samples from the company that sold RM before that time.

Degica's samples are linked under downloads top right, or you can find the links to additional free games if you follow the link in my signature.

Please try to download and open one of those samples, it might be that what you're currently try to open isn't an editable sample...

That is the basic engine - neither the editor nor a complete game, but one of the files that will be copied into a project folder when you create a new project, and it's useless on its own. It's NOT a sample game. The sample game can be downloaded from this site, just click on download top right.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
