GAME DOWNLOAD: Enex2 Download v1.4

Abstract: Low-Gimmicks Vast Fantasy RPG with large amounts of exploration

Genre: Fantasy RPG

Average Game Time: 25-40+ hours, depending on the amount of optional content seeked

Story / Setting / Purpose:

One day, after sermon, you realize that your brother Brendan has gone missing. Though you begin this day by searching for your brother, it ends with you finding yourself the target of some strange conspiracy which earns you the ire of the powerful Carillean Kingdom, which seems to believe that you are a dark preacher of the forbidden god, Skiack.  By seeking out supernatural aid, as well as accepting the aid of new friends met along the way, will you be able to prove your innocence and perhaps even get to the bottom of just what is happening in Carille's government?

Enex is basically a Low-Gimmicks RPG. It is simple and the main goal at all points of the game is fun. The focus is on giving the player the feel of being in an expansive world that begs to be explored. Exploring through dungeons is more than simply making your way from point A to point B, but are frequently based around puzzles and almost always contain a dungeon challenge, a minigame which will your test your reflexes to earn your survival!

As another step to prevent the tedium that is so often found in RPG games, all enemies are visible on the map before they are faced. They can be snuck around instead of fought. However, once slain, most monsters do not return. This means that in most cases, the EXP that can be earned has a cap. It is not my intention to encourage "grinding" in this game, as I find the action to be dull and often trivializes the intentionally difficult encounters. One should feel safe to explore and backtrack, with little fear of having to face the same monster in the same place over and over again.

Finally, Enex2 has a large focus on optional content. There are numerous optional (some extremely difficult) bosses, side quests, and minigames to play in order to reward those who enjoy exploring.

Character Bios:

You:

Proficiency: Swords & Bardic Inspiration

Class: Bard

Hometown: Bedalni

A rather ordinary and calm young adult, you were just interested in living a simple farm life in Bedalni. However, this has all changed and you has been thrust upon a vast and unfamiliar world.

Farik:

Proficiency: Bows & Healing Magic

Class: Priest

Hometown: Yibinroh

A virtuous goody-goody religious fanatic of Wa, the god of light. He tends to be a bit cowardly and wimpy, but is quite the sharpshooter. Though he often complains about the conditions of the adventure, Farik knows he fights in the name of holy Wa and would never disappoint his god.

Theo:

Proficiency: Evocation and Cosmic Arcana

Class: Evoker

Hometown: Salinry

An intelligent and mature companion to Ralla, he seems to follow in Ralla's devious lifestyle, though with objection. Theo rarely gets upset, frightened, or excited and prefers to keep a cool head when disaster strikes. He wishes to do the right thing as much as possible, but seems to be failing due to the negative influence from Ralla. When sharing stolen goods or being convinced by Ralla to perform yet another heist, he reminds himself that not everyone is perfect and tries to view himself as more as a Robin Hood than anything else.

Ralla

Proficiency: Daggers and Bombs

Class: Rogue

Hometown: Salinry

A impulsive and rude theif, Ralla has no reservations against robbing or mugging anyone with enough money. Her first thought is always "I wonder what he/she has to steal from." She almost never thinks of others, but would never abandon her best friend, Theo. She is able to convince him to follow in her schemes only because they do not wish to be seperated. However, it is this for the same reason that Theo is able to drag her into helping you and Farik - a seeming deviance from her usual selfish and uncaring lifestyle.

Beneath the dark stormclouds that hang above the Divinis Monestary, a crowd of clerics try their best to hold strong against the ever present Putrefaction: beings of rot and decay who flow from the nearby swamps of the Ninurta Stagnants. Can you keep your pool's sanctity high enough until it matures into fully fledged Holy Water before the Putrefaction succeed in transforming it into a pool of filth?

The darkness caused by the ever-present storm makes it a bit of a challenge to see The Putrefaction, as they are black. The key would be to identify them by the glowing eyes, and not to allow them to sneak up.

You will explore far off lands, discovering new people and their strange customs.

The Stagnant Caves are a series of putrid tunnels found in the Ninurta Stagnants. Ooze and abomination lurk in every corner, and you will have to walk through these confusing tunnels in which no human is ever welcome.

Using your skills of stealth, learned from the thieves Ralla and Theo, sneak through the hostile city of Carille unnoticed.

Those lucky enough to have earned the Treasure Hunter Isaac's assistance will find him invaluble in discovering hidden underground chests. Step within 4 units of a buried treasure and Isaac will alert you, telling you treasure is close by. Find the exact spot of the treasure's location and Isaac will dig it up for you. Who knows what wonderful items you could earn, secretly scattered throughout the world?

Watch out for possible hostiles while exploring the world! Will you sneak past them, cowardly run away, or face them bravely head-on?

Solve a simple sliding block puzzle in order to open the tomb.

The Fimbeln Glacis is a land of towering mountains and ever-present ice. Found within it here is a reflex based minigame where you must cross a gaping chasm. Your mage has managed to create a delicate ice bridge using his magic. Of course, constructing the ice bridge is very difficult, and cannot be made perfectly. As such the blocks tend to be a.. scattered. If you step on the ice bridge, the slipperyness will cause you to constantly be moving forward, so don't slip off! Theo can blow gusts of win at you to make you do a Jump up, right, left, or down 2 spaces. The reason the bridge appears to be missing the south block to get your character over there, is that as you step on a block it melts very shortly after, causing you unable to jump backwards and forwards over and over again to think for a bit.

Deeper in the Fimbeln region lies a frozen cave with magma running through it. How does the ice remain unmelted? Some say it may have something to do with the strange rumors of a particularly vicious haunt dwelling in the cave. Some claim it some strange phantasm of fire, while others claim it has an ice like affinity. Other say there are, in fact, TWO wretched spirits living in the cave.

Features:

The game is jam packed with sidequests, optional content, and minigames. I dare someone to find everything without the help of the FAQ! Some examples of such optional content includes:

*A Mining/Ore Smelting/Fishing/Herb Gathering/Wood Gathering/Holy Water Blessing optional minigames, most of which are a test of reflexes. These profession skills can only be unlocked by performing a sidequest in certain towns, and then by playing a minigame to gather the materials.

*Hidden Wisdom Fountains throughout the world, those who can seek them out and answer their riddles are rewarded with strange stones.

*Optional bosses everywhere. Hunt down the Dragons to claim powerful equipment. Seek out and destroy the hidden and anguished Hades Spirits to earn the right to face the greatest challenge in the game.

*In almost every dungeon, there is a minigame challenge that must be completed to pass through. This ranges from catching rabbits to dodging falling rocks to avoiding a series of gouts of lava. Most of these are reflex based.

Enex features a small degree of character customization through its ability system. The skills known by the characters are determined not through your base level (which will determine your stats) but instead through a level of proficiency in that type of skill. All characters have two separate types of skills and will gain proficiency through using them. For example, the priest Farik is capable in both Bows and Healing Magic. One player who find themselves frequently using Farik to sling arrows at enemies will discover far more bow skills than healing magics. A different player might find himself with a balanced Farik, who is skilled both in the Bow and the Healing Art but masters neither, and a final, more conservative player might find his Farik somewhat green with his bow but holding great mastery in healing.

Reviews:

Zealotry is not a walk in the Park (3.5 / 5)

Known Issues:

You must have the "Calibri" Font installed on your computer. It is highly likely you already have it, but if not, it is easy to install. One example of a place to do so is here: http://www.cufonfont...t/12048/calibri

Version 1.2 of the game has a game progression issue. Upon defeating the Final Boss of the game, the ending cutscene does not play. Please update to version 1.3 if you encounter this bug.

Version 1.3: In Torrentia Cave, floor is completely black due to missing graphics. Bug fixed in Version 1.4.

If you feel that your save file has been broken, contact me and I will fix it for you.

Wow I'm impressed! 25-40 hours of gametime is a lot, I bet it took you a while to complete. :)

Were you the only one working on this project or did you work as a team?

In any way it looks really nice, and I love the mapping! Will make sure to donwload and try it out for sure!

Can't wait!

Thank you for your kind words, both of you! I am looking forward to hearing your opinions after you have played some. I definitely consider mapping to be my strongest area.

I was the only one working on this project. It took me ages and I "burnt out" twice, disappearing for long swathes of time much to chagrin of people who were looking forward to the project back then. I don't even remember when it was started, but it was definitely before July 2007. I would estimate that I spent well over a thousand hours working on it. It's actually been finished for about 3 years now, but I didn't want to release it until it felt "perfect." I recently realized this would never happen and decided to throw the switch and release it. I have pretty much remade the thing from the ground up three times now.

This might come off as wrong but I'm really glad to see a finished product from someone who has "burnt out" multiple times... it gives me hope for my own project. Anyway my internet sucks but in an hour or so when it downloads I'll probably be trying it out (or I might fall asleep and play it tomorrow, either way)

I wish you the best of luck with it, it is not easy. I recommend that, instead of doing as I did (I only barely was able to finish this project), you consider releasing your big project episodically or seriously consider shortening it.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback of the game!

You need to have "Calibri" installed on your computer as a font. My apologies, but most computers have calibri on their computer. I've added this font requirement to the Issues section.

http://www.cufonfonts.com/en/font/12048/calibri

You can install the font from here, or many other places.

An important note to everyone who currently has a copy of the game:

I recently discovered that V1.2 has a bug at the Final Boss of the game, whereupon after defeating him the game will not progress. For many this will not matter for quite some time, but you should migrate to the newer build when possible =P. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused!

Hi there, erichermit,

When I tried to download this, I got this message. What does it mean?

Google Drive can't scan this file for viruses.

Enex2v1.3.zip (199M) exceeds the maximum size that Google can scan. Would you still like to download this file?

Look forward to playing this!

@Alkorri

It means basically what it says: Since Enex2 is 200 MB, google wont virus scan it for you. You can still scan it yourself etc. I certainly didn't include any viruses in my hobbyist rpgmaker project, however.

Regardless, I've recently updated to a newer build, and have changed the link to a different source anyway. I'll probably migrate to using my personal page at some point in the future rather than google drive / rpgmaker.net.

In any case, you should definitely download now and give my game a try! I await you feedback. :)

@MarianCross

Each Hades boss drops its own Key. You've already defeated Eridanos + Phlegethon, which are actually one of the harder pairs I believe, so the others shouldn't be quite so hard. I'll start here with a hint, and then if you're still stuck you can ask again and I'll just outright tell you.

Acheron: Located in Lunis Cave (near Arcanamil)

Cocytus: Located in the Kodapi Desert (near Nalac)

Lethe: Located in the Stagnant Caves (near Divinis / Ninurta)

Phlegedanos: Located in the Fimbeln Cave

Each of these monsters are very difficult. However, each one has a hidden magical item somewhere, generally somewhat nearby (0-2 zones away), that will make the fight easier. If you are finding them too troublesome, the items can be very helpful, but they are by no means necessary.

After you have defeated all of them, there is a woman in Divinis who is the main quest hub for the Hades Quests. You can talk to her before you've killed all the Hades Spirits if you like to get more information. In any case, upon defeating all four of the bosses (counting Phlegethon and Eridanos as one boss) if you speak to Juna of Divinis you will be able to face the 5th and final Hades Spirit, the most powerful boss in the game.

This also seems to be a good time to mention that I'll be keeping a running list of all Hades Slayers on the front page of all my Enex2 topics, to honor those who manage to defeat them. I know it's not very difficult to "hack" my game as I intentionally refrained from compressing it, so this is basically going to run on an honor system. Good Luck!

Before I download and try playing your game, I wonder if you would give me some explicit clarification.

In your description of the game, you refer to mini games which are a test of reflexes; you also refer to rabbit catching and rock dodging.  My reflexes are not fast.  Would it be safe to say, therefore, that most of these would be undo-able for someone like me?

I'm assuming that you mean you've already defeated Lethe.

You probably don't need the Angst Crystal actually. Acheron actually starts the game in a near-invincible form (that can be harmed by the Angst Crystal. I think that Holy Water and light moves like sunsword might work as well.) Just defend up against him until he uses his phase change move. It's a good phase to get your guys fully buffed in.

Which Hades boss has been your favorite thus far, Marian? Most challenging?

It really depends on the degree that your reflexes are bad. >.> Unfortunately, these dungeon challenges are generally unskippable. I'd still suggest you give it a try and hopefully find it manageable, but it certainly is possible that you would not be able to get past certain portions of the game.

There are two bits of solace you can take though. I'm willing to beat them for you if you like by trading over the save file, when I have time that is, as I do find the challenges quite enjoyable.

The game is also not compressed, so you can always open it with the editor and manually force a skip through it. This is not a very fun thing to do and really harms game immersion however. If this ends up being necessary, it's probably best you just don't play my game. :(

It seems very reasonable for you to not bother playing my game, but I am always enjoying more people to have played it so I would still suggest you give it a try!

Thanks! I hope you remember as well! :D

ow,, yeah its actually lethe that i defeated,..^_^

the first time i tried to fight acheron without the angst crystal,, all of my light damage are just 0, holy water's damage is only 2000 and i can only stack up to 99,, maybe ill try waiting that phase changing move,..

and the most challanging hades boss?i think its phlegedanos since i fought it when i was at level 40 or 50 i think,..but the other two are just a piece of cake since im already level 60, even lethe with its amnesia move,..and i already have light skills from farik and ralla,.. anti freeze barrier plus mitten is super effective against Phlegedanos.  ;)

Acheron can't kill me at this level, but i cant kill him also,,lol

so I got to try it...

1) Window animations are nice, the first few times you see it... IDK if this exists (so pardon me if it does), having an option to speed up or completely remove the animation is nice... It just gets too tiring and tedious to see those after a couple of times

2) I find it tedious that I need to open the menu then click the gold command just to see the gold... not a gamebreaker, I just don't find the use of it

3) I was stopped because this happened:

I was walking around town, saw the hopping rabbit, followed it, then decided to open and close the menu a few times successively, game crashed with a message: Script is hanging... IDK if your animation script got stressed due to me opening and closing the menu fastly, but if it does, better fix that...

#1 is a complaint I've heard about a few times. I'd go and fix it, probably, if I wasn't on "change Game-Breaking Bugs Only" state of this game (for me, I'm 4 years past completion. >.>) Though it's certainly good to learn stuff like this so I don't repeat it again. You can actually start using the menu as soon as you hit the Esc key, you don't have to wait for the animation. Of course, you can't see it until it moves in, but it doesn't take very long to just automatically know where everything is.

#3 is odd. I've never had anyone report that bug to me before! It might have to do with all the animals in the scene. I'll try to recreate it by opening and closing the menu real fast.

I hope the game is otherwise to your liking, assuming the crash bug didn't sour your mood on the whole thing!

@Shadowfire: I hope you enjoy it! Please be sure to return to report your thoughts, I'm very interested to learn from your feedback.

Also, Someone reviewed my Game! :D
