Dear Ms. Arzeno:

I write to you bearing grievous news...

So begins the letter to bestselling American novelist Olive Arzeno, informing her of her estranged uncle's demise at his home in Great Britain's North York Moors. After making the voyage across the Atlantic to see firsthand the house and property she has just inherited, Olive finds a mysterious note left by her departed uncle and signs that a deeper tragedy may have befallen the previous inhabitants of this quiet, empty home in the hills of northeastern England...

Epiphany is a short 2-D adventure game created with the RPG Maker VX Ace engine. Throughout the game you will search for clues, solve logic-based puzzles, and uncover long-buried secrets. The closest analogy I can think of is Myst with the look of a classic JRPG. If that sounds appealing to you, give Epiphany a whirl and let me know what you think!

GAME FEATURES

  • Length: 1-4 hours, depending on how quickly your brain deconstructs the puzzles
  • Inventory: Though most of the puzzles are logic-based and NOT of the "use the peanut butter on the balloon to get the hippopotamus skeleton" variety, there IS an inventory that serves mainly as a repository for clues you collect. That said, I highly suggest having pen and paper handy for notes!
  • Graphics: I'm not an artist, so a huge debt is owed to the RPG Maker community for almost all of the game's visual assets. Full list of contributors in the Credits section below.
  • Music: 100% original compositions (all by me). If you like any of the tracks and want an mp3, just shoot me a PM with your info and I'll email it to you!
  • Save System: This is a save-anywhere game, with the save function accessible from the in-game menu.

CONTROLS

Keyboard:

ARROW KEYS - Move character

Z - Inspect items of interest/Confirm selection

X - Open menu/Decline selection

Xbox 360 Controller:

Left Stick - Move character

A - Inspect items of interest/Confirm selection

X - Open menu/Decline selection

Change Game Window:

F5 - Alternate between fullscreen and windowed mode

TIPS

  • Inspect everything! Not every stick of furniture or scrap of clothing will be important, but if you hope to solve every puzzle, you'll need to be diligent about your sleuthing.
  • Save often! You never know when your house/apartment/hotel room will lose power and wipe out an hour's progress, so save your game frequently.
  • Check your inventory! Items you're carrying may carry important clues, so if you're stuck, it might be worth seeing if what you've got with you can be of any help.

I am enjoying this game very much! I've played for about an hour, until I got stuck on the music puzzle to get into the switch room.

I'm very tired and maybe my brain needs a rest, so I'll try to work it out again after some rest.

I love all the graphics  - the notes and such.

I have a few minor problems with some of the mapping, but they aren't a big enough to go into details about it!

The story as revealed in journals and letters is very intriguing, and I can't wait to get to the bottom of it all.

Very well done!

Same with me. Don't get the Music Code on the Third Floor.

And that Color thing in the Underground along with the psi Code. :(

I've just gone through your game and I loved it.

There were some puzzles that reminded me of the good old puzzles à la Myst, like getting the right amount of Amp.

I was stuck for a moment with the music puzzle, since there was what I thought was a clue in journal #3, then put it aside as I had other places to explore. Actually, we are not supposed to open the door with the music puzzle before getting the final clue. :p

The puzzles in general were well thought, with just enough clues to solve them without either breezing through or tearing our hair out.

The mapping is sometimes a bit big and empty, but it didn't bother me too much as it is a puzzle game. I spoke about Myst earlier and it was probably the first game of this kind to look pretty anyway :)

Musics were not often present but matched the scenes when heard.

That was a very pleasant game, I'm glad I tried it.

Can you help me than with the Dungeon under the Graveyard?

I did color the Displays with the code from the clock in the kitchen.

But can't make the other things.

I'll write inside a spoiler tag, obviously:
You need the color (you got it), the direction and the sound.

I don't remember where I got it, but for this you need the "Bunker Sound Clue" item.

Each color is associated with a wind. At the B3 level, you have a simulation room with a wind rose.

With that, you can associate a color and its direction.

For the sound, it's also in this room. Walk on the blue pedestals for the directions you have found to hear the right one.

After that, you only need to set up the four rooms to unlock the door.

I was stuck like you, but that will come later. Actually, you cannot pass at this moment (but soon you will!).

Now that you have the music box, it should be easy.

You can replay the tune if you activate the box in your inventory, in case you've forgotten the melody.

Thank you for the kind words, cabfe. This is my first attempt at making any kind of game, and you're right, the mapping is a bit empty in places (got a little overzealous with map sizes, I fear). But I'm glad you liked it! I really appreciate you taking the time to play the game and let me know what you thought of it.

Here is the answer:

Counting from left to right:

1 3 4 2 5 7 6
Anyone who doesn't have the music box in your inventory yet, please don't try to solve this puzzle before you're supposed to.

I haven't tried it, but it's probable that it will break the game somehow.

Luckily it will NOT break the game if you try to solve the music puzzle without the music box. You can actually skip vast swaths of the game's puzzles if you have prior knowledge of where things are (for example, you can get to the bunker immediately without finding the clues that point out where it is).

That said, I agree - you should move through the game as it was intended, for story purposes. :)

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
