____________________________________________________________________________________

Plot

It is the year 1461 in the wondrous world known as Valerion, where humans have prospered greatly in the use of magical forces and early science due to the recent discovery of a valuable magical metal known as Ruthium. Because of this, almost seemingly overnight, society has transformed in to one reliant on its uses in just about everything. The Baldune Continent's utmost superpower, the kingdom of Euxaria, has managed to stay at the forefront of this magical and technological revolution for a while, making way for continued peace between the six kingdoms thanks to its noble and just monarch, King Darius II. But although most of the kingdom has been kept happy and thriving, there is the exception of the Barbarian Legion, which continues to attack the out-land cities surrounding Euxaria. Because of this, King Darius has had to shift priorities over to dealing with these criminals, while in the meantime raising his own son, Zahe Kuroi, to be the kingdom's next heir. However, Zahe does not care about his father's wishes for him to succeed the throne. Most of the time, Zahe would prefer to tinker with his machines, read novels, or study philosophy and magic rather than listen to his father go on about the responsibilities he'll have as the future king of Euxaria. He has his own way of doing things which are not of tradition, but instead based off of what stays true to his own beliefs. Unfortunately, with the kingdom's people being very comfortable with and protective about their ways of living, this has not earned him many favors. Instead, his people scorn him and express distrust of what his intentions will be when it is time for him to inherit the throne.

As tensions rise to a boiling point between his kingdom and the Barbarian Legion, King Darius finally decides to negotiate a peace treaty with the barbarians in an effort to quell the storm rising between the two opposing factions. The treaty is initially accepted by the barbarians, but when a surprise attack is orchestrated on the castle by a legion warrior named Gorgen, the castle and its inhabitants are thrown in to a state of disarray and pandemonium the likes of which haven't been seen for over 100 years. While Zahe struggles to search for his father amidst the chaos, he meets a young traveller by the name of Gerard who was separated from his friend during a raid on the city markets. Together, they combine their efforts and continue to search while finding out that there is much more to the attack than what meets the eye, and much more at stake than just the Euxarian kingdom.

About Valerion

Within the world of Valerion, there exist six kingdoms - Euxaria, Gallean, Junai, Etwyn, Roil, and Gelden. Each of these kingdoms is a superpower that controls much of Valerion and its inhabitants, with the exception of those who dwell within the Szirdrei Flats, a vast expanse of cursed land that many wouldn't dare set foot in. However, there is a legend that tells of a gateway located there that leads to the mythical seventh kingdom, Luvaria, which was sealed in to another dimension by its ruler long ago to protect the now-extinct Czeti race from being wiped out by the demigod, Ruthius Veraxi. The six known kingdoms are all allied with each other, sharing a long-lasting peace that has gone on for over 100 years. Thanks to the recent rise in science and the discovery of Ruthium, teleportation and machines are widespread and trade between kingdoms couldn't be easier. For Valerion, it is a very prosperous era full of new, unhatched possibilities.

Zahe Kuroi:

Zahe Kuroi is the current heir to the throne of Euxaria, his father being King Darius II. Even though he is a prince, his mannerisms are not at all like royalty, and he is constantly judged by his own people for the beliefs he holds true to himself. Despite all this, he is very accepting of others and overlooks the flaws some may have because he knows that despite a person's shortcomings, everybody has something of value to contribute no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. He enjoys inventing things, reading adventure novels and studying magic in his free time. He is friends with Sylphie and has an unprecedented love for apples and guns.

Gerard Dominaga:

With his fiery yet collected personality, Gerard is a man of words as well as actions. Hailing from the southern continent of Gandara, he has travelled to the Euxarian kingdom in an attempt to free himself from painful memories involving his past. Caught up in the mess between Euxaria and the Barbarian Legion, he meets Zahe and befriends him during the attack. He likes fighting, eating, and exploring the vast world around him. He has a lot of patience, but isn't very fond of people who waste his time. He also likes big weapons and has a soft spot for people who are faced with difficult decisions. He had been travelling with Trefoille when the Barbarian Legion laid siege to Euxaria, separating them both.

Sylphie Belmonte:

A noble girl born in Gallean, Sylphie Belmonte has been friends with Zahe since childhood when she was abandoned in the arms of a guard as a baby. She was adopted by King Darius until she was found to have an inherent ability to use the fabled magic of the angelic Cezeti race, at which point she was put in a noble school for gifted magic users so that her abilities could flourish. However, because of her impatient, air-headed nature, she has a hard time fully utilizing her talents properly, leading to many minor magical mishaps occurring throughout the kingdom. She is most happy when it snows and enjoys riding airships. She also has an unusually profound adoration for chickens, which she thinks are cute.

Trefoille Alcinda:

Born in to a poor family, Trefoille is an expert in the art of speech and getting away from undesirable people quickly. She has been Gerard's travelling partner ever since the night she tried to steal something from a market stall in Corvale and got caught by the town guard. After Gerard saw the potential she had for talking people up, he became interested in learning a thing or two about the magic of speech and asked her to teach him what she knew. After being bailed out of prison, Trefoille joined Gerard in his aimless travels in hopes that she could get away from her circumstances, which Gerard could wholly relate to. She is energetic, talkative, and very nimble. Her interests include shiny objects, obscure clothing, and "relieving" people from "the burden of their assets". She doesn't like to talk about her parents.

King Darius Kuroi II

Zahe's father and the second monarch of the Euxarian kingdom. His own father, King Kuroi I, was appointed High King in the late 1300s after he slew the demigod, Ruthius Veraxi, using ancient Triterran magic passed down to him by his own father. Darius tries very hard to be a noble king, but sometimes his judgment is clouded by his desire to please everyone, which has been his downfall on more than one occasion. He is good friends with the high minister, Marcus, even though they have conflicts of interest on some things. He is very wise and accepting, but under his smiles and goodwill, he holds a dark secret that he has kept for many years, and is unknown to all but himself...

Marcus McDowell

Even though he is only 20 years old, Marcus has managed to secure himself a position as one of the seven head ministers of the Grand Church of Valerion through his devout faith in the gods and their blessings. Although he and Zahe do not get along well, they understand one another and try their best to keep civil out of mutual respect when dealing with issues they disagree upon. He is stubborn, to-the-point, and prudish by nature, but he is capable of extending his views to accomodate another person when it is necessary or if it is to help someone in need. His most captivating and noticeable features are his vibrant blue eyes, which many consider a blessing from the heavens. He spends most of his time writing speeches and sermons up in the royal church belltower and dealing with social matters within the kingdom of Euxaria.

Juuna Baltorres

Because of his father's position as a high-ranking general in the UAV(United Alliance of Valerion), Juuna has seen much war from a very young age. When he was old enough to wield a sword and gun, he involved himself in many important political events, eventually leading up to the assassination of Malvir, a former high minister of the Grand Church of Valerion. But when the mission went horribly wrong and his father was killed in front of him, he blamed himself and has never been the same since. When the rest of his family heard of his failure, Juuna was cast aside and ended up doing small-time security work until getting a promotion doing service as a guard captain for the kingdom of Euxaria. He tries to be confident and kind, but sometimes his past catches up to him and his inner vengeance comes out through his words and actions. He has few interests other than reading, some of these being metaphysics and the art of warfare.

So I am not going to lie, I just scrolled through your post and looked at the pictures and didn't read anything.

But, the point of these pictures should be to showcase things in your project you are proud of, or feel like work is needed.

The first word in your title screen is unreadable, beige on beige with a light drop shadow? Like, it's not even a slightly darker beige or anything. It's literally the same colour.

Secondly, your menus look like a mess. Translucent menu windows over translucent menu windows with a highly decorative background is an assault on the eyes and makes those menus both unattractive and non-functional from an point of view of easiness to glean information.

Thirdly, the bars on your HUD and in your menus are random colours that completely contrast with the very brown, beige, almost 'sepia'-like colour scheme of everything else. Change those colours to be less flamboyant.

Also, those character sprites you are using for headers are so big they are annoying. I would reduce them by at least 50% to make your page more readable and encourage people to actually read the information rather than scroll past everything and just look at the pictures.

I agree with Prexus' CC.

Your game looks pretty nifty so far, though. I'll look into this later~

Thanks for the critique, Prexus. I'll see if I can work out the things you suggested so everything looks better and is easier on the eyes.

EDIT: I've re-sized and re-formatted the forum topic. Prexus or Chris, if you arrive back here anytime soon, let me know how it looks. I'm currently working on the new logo for my game as we speak, so expect to see that done and up at the top instead of the other one soon. Should be done in about 30-60 minutes, assuming no interruptions.

Looking through your first post, I agree with pretty much all of Prexus's criticisms so I'm glad you're going to take them on board.

Another point: "Akyldachtnia"? That's just ridiculous. Quite a few fantasy authors, and (J)RPG creators too, have a issue where they feel the need to create horrible abominations of words to sound more 'fantasy' and 'exotic'. You've got more than one of those alphabet soup words in your description and I'd hazard a guess you've got more in your game too. My friendly advice would be to be very careful about those and honestly, I'd say cut them out. At the very least, 'Akyldachtnia' has to go.

Although there are some glaring flaws, your game does seem like it has potential so I'm looking forward to see where you take it ^_^

Thanks for the suggestion, Melusine. I'm not sure what to say about the names since I always thought those kind of names were cool because they were very original. When I thought up the name Akyldachtnia (Ack-ul-dack-t-nee-ah), I was trying to think of something suitable for a foreign island resort town, which is why it turned out a bit abstract. Now, you say there are a number of other "alphabet soup" names as well in my game description. Would you mind pointing some more of them out for me so I can get a better feel for them?

Also, if there are any other things you have noticed, then by all means, tell me more. You have my permission to beat my game to death with critique. :p It lets me know what to refine.

the name "Akyldachtnia" does sound a bit too fancy to me, but I personally didn't find it that difficult to pronounce (got it right before reading your phonetic example :p ). I have no clue how to pronounce the first part of Eiuxaria though.

point definitely still stands though: names that are exaggeratedly long or quirky can easily provoke an eye-roll. it's just that stigma of over-the-top names that are common throughout many fictional works, just like Melusine stated. my advice: try not to go overboard with syllables or unnecessary letters, or at least make sure that there is a miniscule amount of names like Akyldachtnia. it becomes a problem when every different key term has a seemingly-difficult to pronounce name with 4+ syllables, because the reader tends to stop caring at that point.

anyways, I like your story. the protagonist seems pretty interesting!

e: almost forgot; browsing through your initial post, I find Szirdrei and Etwynin super iffy. I'm sure someone else can point out some other ones.

All right, I see... thanks for clarifying, Safety. :) If I was to change Etwynin, do you think Etwyn would suffice? I have been thinking of doing that anyway. As for Szirdrei, I think I'll keep that one as it is. The sound of the name sort of... matches the area, if that makes any sense.

yeah, I think that's less strenuous on a first glance. Szirdrei sounds like it'll be an interesting place with a name like that, haha.

All right, well I've updated the menus so they are a bit less transparent. Hopefully the decorative background isn't as intrusive as it was before. Re-did the header title too, which looks a lot nicer than the last one(the previous one was more of a substitute anyway), and am starting to work on refining my in-game title screen as well as beefing up animations and map graphics. :) Hopefully I'll be able to get Eiuxaria done by the end of this week. Stay tuned, and as always, it's great to hear any critique or suggestions so I can gain an outside perspective on things.

Indev version 1.0.1 update! I have released two more character biographies: King Darius II, and Marcus McDowell. Development has been going along swimmingly and because of that, I have decided to add more screenshots that show a little more of the game's content. To be honest, the last ones were rather empty and didn't really show the selling point of the game, which is the in-depth story and dialogue. Hopefully the ones posted now incite a little more interest and anticipation for the game's release. On that note, I have managed to get production done ahead of schedule on the Eiuxarian kingdom, so hopefully a demo won't be far behind this update. I think being able to play a bit of the game will do far more justice than any screenshot or gameplay video ever could, so look forward to that soon!

As usual, suggestions or critique are very much appreciated, whether it is bad or good. :) Stay tuned for more exciting updates on the world of Valerion!

EDIT: Screenshots fixed and shouldn't be displaying as errored images anymore. I'm now heading out to a friend's place and will be back to work on the game sometime tomorrow to work on a demo release.

Arlic: I am actually really surprised that you took my commentary so to heart, and didn't get upset and start moaning that I flamed you.

As a courtesy, when I get some spare time (probably Tuesday night) I will go through your thread with a fine tooth comb and pick it apart.

One thing I noticed already though as others have mentioned, a large portion of your names are alphabet soup. I am pretty good pronunciation but some of those words I can't even get out of my mouth. When I go through the thread I will make a list of the words and whether or not I think they can be salvaged (slight change) or needs to be completely rethought.

Also, the text in your dialogue windows looks a bit too small for that decorative font. There is a lot of room for the size to be increased straightforwardly. Also the boxes don't extend all the way to the left and it looks jarring. http://i.imgur.com/flFUd.png this is an example of the window I use which looks quite similar. It's a little more stylish than yours but it illustrates a good way to fade out the box so it doesn't take up the entire screen but isn't jarring.

Thanks for the additional input, Prexus. I've had some personal friends offer criticism on the names as well, which is leading me to really go over them and think about which ones can stay and which ones need to be changed. If you were to offer some extra criticism on that as well as anything else you find in the topic, that would be fantastic and I would be very appreciative of that. As it stands, a lot of creation has been done with the game, but most of the stuff that has been created needs a lot of refinement, so any help at all with identifying what needs work is very helpful and valuable to the overall development of the project.

Now, I'm still at my friend's place and have decided on dinner tonight before I head home, but next time I'm at my computer I will see what I can do about those dialogue windows.

EDIT: Got home and fixed the dialogue window size. Also tuned up the screenshots to compensate for this change.

Looks interesting. Your faces all seem to be a different style; are they just placeholders? If not, I'd consider keeping them in the same style.

The ones I have up now are the final faces, though I have been thinking about replacing Juuna and Gorgen's face with something different. Before these ones, I had a bunch of other place holder faces until I decided that these ones fit my game and its fruity graphic theme quite nicely. Most of them are actually done by the same graphics artist too.

EDIT: Thinking about changing 'em now.... hmm... well, I guess we'll see what's produced by this other guy I have on commission and take it from there.

Indev Version Update 1.0.2

Hey, everyone. It's been a while since I've last done an update, so I decided I'd go ahead and make a support signature bar as well as give you a run down on what's been going on with the project. I've also added a new character biography for Juuna to the biographies section of the thread. You can view it below too.

But when a mission went horribly wrong and his father was killed in front of him, he blamed himself and has never been the same since.
Here is the support bar. Add it to your forum signature if you want to support the game!

As for game development, I'm working on a crafting and refining/enchanting system at the moment that will provide a lot of equipment customization and flexibility. Because of this, I've been droning away at my computer, filling out database entries for the past week. I don't know when I'll be done with that, but hopefully it will be soon. I've already got enough gameplay for a lengthy demo and it is working 99% bug-free at the moment, but I'm holding off on the release until I add some cool, new features and smooth things out a bit more. This equipment crafting/refining/enchanting system is just one of the many cool features you'll be able to find in the demo. As always, thanks for any compliments and suggestions you guys have and I'll see you around!

Thanks, Azure. Yeah, I've spent a lot of work on editing graphics and stuff to make things in the game seem more alive. I really want the game to be unique and worth playing when everything is done. It's a slow chisel through the rock known as this project, but it will get there eventually.

Brief update: Database entries for weapon crafting/refinement have been completed. Right now, I'm just spiffing up the game here and there, nitpicking at anything that stands out in the slightest. I'll be starting on making a few more quests after that. Also, I'm experimenting with a new menu style.
