I m just wondering, is there any way to make an event that can only be triggered when the player is facing a certain direction. Like for example a chest that can only be opened when the player is standing below it and facing the chest. I know it is technically possible by surrounding the chest with items so the player cant get to the other sides and back of it, but I would rather not have to do that. Another example would be to only be able to talk to an NPC when you are in front of them, they don't respond when you try to talk to them from behind. Is this possible at all?

In the chest event, add a conditional branch that checks if the player is facing up, if they are, open the chest, if not, do nothing.

And how do I do that? The tutorials I have seen don't really explain things very well. I see them mention conditionals but not show how to actually use them.

2. Look through each page

I think you need to go back and read more tutorials then ... the conditional branch is on the first tab of the event commands.

I read the tutorials, most of them show you the screen to enter stuff, but they don't show you how to get there. Like trying to figure out how to make a house, I had to find a video on youtube before I could find out how to use the interior tiles. I've got it working now though. Thanks.

The tutorials will need to be revised then.

Which tutorial is this?

Well the main ones on the site first, couldn't check many other ones because I couldn't find the right thing to search. I found a tutorial someone had made into a game that explained events, but it mostly explained what events are and how they can be used. Looking at the events in the game didn't help much either because they just said "conditional branch" on them but didn't show how to add that.

"Make Your Own Game Part 8 - Events Part 1" This one right? I looked at it and ya, it explains how events work but I guess they assume you can figure out how to add commands.

The tutorials should be explaining how things work in a game, but then they should be explaining how you do those things in RPG Maker. It's like a manual telling you how to drive a car yet it doesn't explain how to start the car. I looked to the tutorials first to find out how to use RPG Maker VX Ace, but I wound up having to go looking for videos made by other people to see how.

1. double click anywhere on the map to make an event and have the event window pop up.

2. double-click, or right-click and select insert on the right hand side of the event window (the ones with the lines that says 'Content'!) to input event commands.

Tada.

Well, the truth is that everyone learns or teaches in their own style.

So while someone might find the tutorials I have written tedious or obscure, someone else might think they are just the exact thing they needed!

So I'll invite you to check out the tutorials I have made (linked via userbars in my signature) as well as the other tuts in the list of beginner tutorials, and hopefully you can be encouraged that you will find just the right stuff somewhere in there. If it is my stuff, great. If it is someone else's, great. And hey, if you don't find anything here, well, do everyone else a favor and send me a link to the great stuff you DO find! Because a forum like this thrives on people all putting their heads together, so we all can benefit!

Hey, hope you make a great game. Good luck!

I don't know about your tutorials, unless you made the main ones for the program. The main ones I feel are more directed to just general how a game works, stuff like "this is what an event is for", rather than how RPG Maker works. Funny enough GrandmaDeb, I found your posts fairly quickly when I was looking for some tilesets, lol did that before ever really using the program much.

And yes Celianna I did figure out how to put events in fairly easily, it was stuff like conditional events that I didn't get so easily because it's not actually that obvious. The program does have tooltips for most things, which is useful, but it can be a bit tedious to have to go through every tooltip until you find something that sounds like what you are looking for. Try thinking like someone who has never used the program before and is trying it out for their first time, if the tutorials don't explain how to do something and they don't know the terms to search for, it kind of makes it hard for them to figure out what to do. That's why I asked here, I knew what I wanted it to do, I just didn't know how it would be phrased relative to RPG Maker in order for me to find the info I needed.

The help file actually explains this though. We assume you've looked through there first.

Regardless, this is solved now, so closing it.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
