.Exe shortcut doesn't save the game

Hey everyone I have a quick question, I have an installer for my current project. After installing the game into a computer the game works fine and saves perfectly when you play the game through the program files. However, if the player plays the game through the desktop shortcut, the game plays but does not save. Any suggestions?

Where is it meant to save to? Are you "the player"? Are YOU running it in the editor and playing through the exe, or are you talking about someone else, or maybe two different people?


If YOU play through the exe can YOU save?


The person who is reporting the issue - where do they have the game installed? If they've got it in Program Files or another Windows folder, that is why it will not save - because Windows doesn't like other programs trying to write stuff to its own folders.

I can save if I play the game through the project editor and through the exe. It will not save however once I add the exe to an installer and then install the exe into my computer.

I saw this from the file "How to sell your game" which was on the RPG Maker Forums somewhere.

Where are you installing it to?

Install it somewhere else that isn't a Windows folder.


Windows doesn't like programs saving stuff to Program Files. So you either need to add a script that tells it to save files to a "good" place (I have one that lets you put save files into AppData), or you need to install it somewhere where Windows won't care about you writing to.


Even put it into a new folder on C: and it will work.

Ooooo, can I please have that script?   It sounds more convenient only because I doubt the player will choose a different location to save the installation.

The issue is to have it set up so that anyone who downloads the installer and then installs the game will automatically have it downloaded into a safe location that windows will not have a problem with, so that the player will be able to save their game without any issues.
