Does anyone know of a commercially-available engine for making Harvest Moon-type games? I'm asking because it seems like a better way than trying to adapt something made for combat-based games. (If the mods want to move this thread, that's fine.)

Was going to suggest the same. It's also a part of the Humble Bundle right now.

I have them; I'm just wondering if there's an engine geared towards farming games.

I may release my farm system at some point later this year if there's enough interest, but I'd probably charge a small fee if you want to use it for commercial games.

Dont know if I even had a copy of that system saved though, so maybe I dont have those things ^_^

Well there are Rural Farm tiles, has scripts and farming, tilesets, stuff like that.

http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/a/graphics/rural-farm-tiles-resource-packIt's worth the money though.
Just going to add to this post in-case anyone thinks they have everything they need for the a HM game... The pack The Odd One suggested does NOT come with scripts needed for a farming game. It simply comes with the graphics and a sound file for digging.

Anyway, just wanted to clarify; OP asked for a HM Engine, that resource pack is nothing close to what you'll be needing unless you only want new tiles. At best if you're new to rpg maker, you can see how some events were done in the game demo, but they're just events. Nothing complex.

heroscratch, please refrain from necro-posting in a thread. Necro-posting is posting in a thread that has not had posting activity in over 30 days. You can review our forum rules here. Thank you.

Sorry for 'necro'posting, but the misinformation from one of the posters wasted $29 from a friend of mine who recently bought RM and doesn't understand that it was just a graphical assets pack.

This post is what led him to buy it. I'm informing future customers that there are NO scripts in this package. Even more surprising is that a mod is more willing to call me for a necropost than fix misleading information.

Do not presume that you can read my mind across the internet and thus know exactly what I am and what I am not prepared to do.  When dealing with a necro post I am not required to read back over the whole thread to discover what the discussion was all about.

Could you suggest to your friend that they read the information on the store page which tells you in very great detail exactly what is in that resource pack.

So a mod's only job is to shoot first and ask questions later? Well, I literally just had a convo with Tyler F. about a week ago on things he could do to re-structure the forums. This is a perfect example.

Instead of just calling "NECRO!" on everything you see, why not see if the 'necro' post has NEW information that was brought to the table. Necroposts are typically people who ask questions in dead threads. I'm correcting bad information from a thread posted 39 days ago that caused someone to lose their money. If a mod had corrected them in the first place, I wouldn't have had to necropost or explain to my friend that he wasted his money.

And he did read the details on the page; like I said, he's new. He didn't know the things in the demo video aren't possible to do without scripts, hell, he doesn't know what scripts are; or that the things in the video were simple events made for that video. I.e. fishing is just you walking up to water and hitting the use button with a fishing pole equipped; the bobber will never go under the water to signify a catch, you simply mash the enter key (my point is this isn't a real system, but deceived him when he watched the video). Honestly, if I had known what he was doing, I would have stopped him instantly, but he pointed me to this thread where he said someone mentioned scripts being included.

Keep in mind the guy who wasted his money is going to probably read this later and see that no one was interested in correcting bad information, just a mod here to call 'necro'. He was super excited and thought himself a bit accomplished for not having to come to me for help; thinking he got something extra and 'techy' with the scripts this guy was talking about. Gotta love that customer support!

First, just for clarity's sake, I am not referring to what is or is not in a demo.  I am referring to this written list.

THIS PACK CONTAINS:

  • Full TileA1-TileA5, Full TileB-TileE for interior and exterior tiles (contains all 4 seasons)
  • 212 large and small icons
  • 32 crops, 8 ores and 10 tools
  • 2 main character sprites with alternate outfits and behaviors/actions
  • 49 unique NPC sprites (197 total)
  • 6 animal sprites
  • 32 doors
  • 12 Window skins (pictures)
  • Sample game with an evented HUD and time system
  • Parallax mapping extras
  • Exclusive bonus: Male and female sprite generator
I'm sorry your friend did not read that, but that is not the fault of the store or of the mods.

Similarly, I am sorry that you feel that you have been treated badly.  You have not.  But that, of course, does not mean that you don't feel that you have, and I'm not asking you to deny your feelings.  However, as I said, mods are not required to read over every thread to see the points of discussion before informing the poster of the forum rules.  And this is not a perfect example of shooting first and asking questions later.  We do not go round guns blazing trying to make people's lives a misery.  You may feel that forum rules do not apply to you.  No one else is under any obligation to agree with that judgement.

I'm not sure why you keep saying my friend didn't read the page even though I told you he did...

(From my previous post)

"And he did read the details on the page; like I said, he's new. He didn't know the things in the demo video aren't possible to do without scripts, hell, he doesn't know what scripts are; or that the things in the video were simple events made for that video. Honestly, if I had known what he was doing, I would have stopped him instantly, but he pointed me to this thread where he said someone mentioned scripts being included."

Then I elaborated saying he didn't even know what scripts were; when I asked if it came with any (scripts), he said he 'thinks so' (cause of this thread). He was delighted to find out he can't do **** with those new assets unless I help him script up a bunch of new systems; so guess what I'll be doing?

My only beef here is that you are more concerned with complaining about a necro-post so you can be the boss, than being cool about someone helping others who might waste their money buying **** they don't need. It's not like the post was super old; I was 9 days past the necro limit. I could have pm'd about it, but there's a few problems with that;

  1. Someone might waste more money between here and there.
  2. I've had ridiculous times waiting for replies before, so this point just solidifies the 1st
  3. Even if I send the information to you people, you may or may not do anything about it.
Sorry if helping people make informed decisions is offensive to your rules.

I've already messaged Tyler Furgeson back about the whole thing, as he was concerned with some things that I brought to his attention in the past. Just think it's dumb anyone would get a 'slap on the wrist' for helping out members of the community. I'd understand if I had asked a stupid question that no one could answer cause the thread was so old. I wasn't even asking a question. All I did was correct some bad intel.

First of all... Who is Tyler Furgeson, and what exactly does he have to do with this discussion?

Secondly, you were never told to stop talking about your friend's issue. You are more than welcome to create a new thread - or better yet, encourage your friend to create it so he/she can communicate with us directly concerning the issue.

Our rules on necroposting are quite clear. If you have an issue with them or have an issue with a moderator enforcing the rule, you can go up the hierarchy chain and file a complaint. Otherwise, we expect posting rules to be followed -- and it's especially crucial to do so when it concerns a serious issue.

I'm going to leave the thread open to give you a chance to reply as to who Tyler is, but I expect you to open a new thread if you want to discuss the Rural Farm product otherwise.

I think he meant Tyler Ferguson, staff member @Deckiller

Ah, I see. I couldn't tell with the spelling. :)

In that case, I'll just go ahead and close this.

@ heroscratch:

My suggestion to open a new thread if you or your friend need to discuss rural farm tiles still stands. Please feel free to do so, or send a private message to a moderator if it needs to be discussed privately. :)

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
